HE Brisbane Broncos stranglehold on one of Australia’s greatest rugby league nurseries won’t last long with little brother Gold Coast Titans poised to garner players from the talent rich city of Logan.
The club is conducting an official review of its recruitment strategies and with the Canberra Raiders abandoning Logan in recent weeks the door is open for the Titans to expand its player catchment area.
Gold Coast list and recruitment manager Jamie Mathiou confirmed the NRL club was interested in increasing their presence in the region.
“We want to provide opportunities for rugby league players right through South East Queensland to Northern NSW, not just the Gold Coast, to play NRL and that includes the Logan area,’ Mathiou said.
“We have no specific change of strategy because the Raiders have dropped their link with the area but are currently looking at our strategy to improve recruitment and development through not just the Gold Coast but the region north and south.”
The Broncos will no longer be the closest NRL club to Logan after the Titans recently unveiled plans to move its headquarters to Coomera.
The new training and administration facility will enable the club to enhance its presence in the region which has produced the likes of Australian Kangaroos captain Cameron Smith, Israel Folau and Anthony Milford.
The Titans have already been given a taste of what the city can offer through former Logan junior William Zillman and former Souths Logan Magpies players Simione Fatefahi and Shane Gillham who are currently in the Gold Coast under-20 team.
The club currently conducts clinics and programs on the southern outskirts of Logan and a further move into city would enable the Titans to recruit talent from under the nose of the Broncos who are building a junior academy in the area.
