Default Caleb Binge fined $900 and has had licence suspended for 3 months

Drink driving Gold Coast Titan Caleb Binge has been fined $900 and had his licence suspended for three months
MEAGAN WEYMES GOLD COAST BULLETIN NOVEMBER 18, 2014 12:19PM

TWO Titans players faced the Southport Magistrates Court today in relation to separate incidents on the Gold Coast and Brisbane.

Caleb Binge copped a $900 fine for driving the day after a night of heavy drinking with mates while unlicensed and with alcohol in his system.

The 21-year-old pleaded guilty to the charges of driving over the alcohol limit on a learners or probationary licence and unlicensed driving in the Southport Magistrates Court this morning.

The court heard Binge was pulled over at 1.10pm on September 28 in a random breath test on his way back to the Gold Coast from Brisbane after a night boozing with mates.

Binge had a positive reading on the breath test — with a blood alcohol concentration of 0.026.

He told police he’d lost his wallet a few days prior and but said he had a probationary licence from NSW.

Police checks found that Binge also had a learners licence from Queensland that had been suspended as a result of not paying a previous fine.

He told police he thought he’d set up a payment plan to pay the fine but said he hadn’t updated his address when he moved interstate or received any information about the fine.

Solicitor Campbell MacCallum said Binge would face heavy sanctions from the Gold Coast Titans as a result of the incident.

Binge was fined $900 and his licence was suspended for three months.

Fellow Titans player James Roberts also appeared in the Southport Magistrates Court on charges of public nuisance and obstructing police.

The matter was adjourned and Roberts will appear again in court on December 10.

Just being a young bloke is hardly a defence for this type of behaviour ... they aspire to be high profile sportsmen but retain the mentality of a layabout ... surely the club can keep a track of their misdemeanours so that they can assist in managing their responsibilities.

0.026 WOW!.........get rid of him! As for the no licence and outstanding fine. No biggie there, my son has done the same thing in the past. 16 thru to 21 yrs of age, (or 22,23) you have a mindset that things just happen and nothing needed on your part. "I'll pay the fine next week"...or "I'll renew my licence next week" You say that once a week for a few months and then when nothing happens (no reminder in the mail etc) it only becomes a memory.

..and MT, I said that to the wife last night about the irony.

Gold Coast Titans players face court on the same day in two separate alcohol-related incidents
MEAGAN WEYMES & TRAVIS MEYN GOLD COAST BULLETIN
    NOVEMBER 19, 2014 12:00AM

JAMES Roberts sought a third chance at NRL fame at the Gold Coast Titans with the help of cousin Caleb Binge, but just months later the duo were facing court on the same day.

Roberts yesterday had his case at Southport Magistrates Court adjourned until December 10 when he will contest charges of obstructing police and public nuisance.

The lightning-quick centre is considered to be one of the NRL’s hottest young talents but he’s now fighting to save his career after being sacked by South Sydney and Penrith in the past two years.

The Titans and NRL are reserving any possible sanctions until Roberts’ case is heard.

The 21-year-old was arrested in Surfers Paradise on October 25 but his solicitor, Campbell MacCallum, said Roberts denied police allegations.

“Certainly, Mr Roberts agrees that he was there, but in terms of what actually unfolded is where we part ways with the prosecution version of events,” he said.

“It’s unfortunate that there’s coincidently two members of the Titans squad were before the court today but, thankfully, both were very minor incidents.”

Court appearances are becoming a regular occurrence for the Titans, having had four players arrested in the past 11 months.

Roberts and Binge, who both hail from Ballina, were living together in Tweed Heads earlier this year as Roberts attempted to resurrect his career after being thrown a lifeline by the Titans.

Binge pleaded guilty yesterday to driving with alcohol in his system on a suspended Queensland learner licence the day after a night of heavy drinking with mates.

The court heard the 21-year-old was “embarrassed” about the incident and thought he would be OK to drive after a “long sleep and a large breakfast”.

Binge was pulled over at 1.10pm on September 28 for a random breath test on his way back from Brisbane after boozing with mates the night before.

His reading on the breath test was positive, with police later confirming he had a blood alcohol concentration of 0.026.

Police prosecutor Sergeant Nicole Powell said he told police he’d consumed “a large quantity” of Coronas the night before.

“He said he believed he’d be OK because he’d had a long sleep and a large breakfast,” Sgt Powell told the court.

Sgt Powell said Binge told police that he’d lost his wallet a few days prior but that he had a provisional licence from NSW.

She said police checks found that he also had a learner licence from Queensland that had been suspended as a result of not paying a previous fine.

He told police he thought he’d set up a payment plan to pay the fine but said he hadn’t received any information about the fine since he moved interstate.

Mr MacCallum said Binge would face “heavy sanctions” from the club and the NRL as a result of the incident — losing match payments and having to do community service and take part in counselling.

He said Binge lived in Tweed Heads and would need to travel Southport for training.

“With the new training facility at The Southport School he does have a distance to travel but thankfully he’s got a lot of mates who can drive him up there,” he said.

Binge was fined $900 and his licence was suspended for three months.
