It's a pity Rankin was born in the Carty era cause he'd be a very good player to pair with LG.

Gold Coast Titans interested in out-of-favour Newcastle Knight Tyrone Roberts

Gold Coast have earmarked Tyrone Roberts as a fallback halves option should the club lose out on the signature of Trent Hodkinson to Newcastle.

The Titans are still on the look-out for a halves partner for Kane Elgey after Daly Cherry-Evans reneged on a four-year deal in favour of a "lifetime" one worth $10 million at Manly. The Queensland club has not only missed out on Cherry-Evans, but also the Roosters' James Maloney, who instead opted to join Cronulla. It's likely Hodkinson will also slip through its grasp as well, with the NSW and Canterbury No.7 said to be leaning towards a shift to the Hunter.

Should that move eventuate, the Knights will have no need for Roberts, who has fallen out of favour this season. The 24-year-old strung together 79 consecutive first-grade appearances before injuring his ankle in late May and was solid during the club's four-game winning streak to start the season. However, he is no certainty of immediately returning to first grade and would be offered a release from the final year of his contract should Hodkinson agree to terms.

Titans sources have indicated Roberts is a player of interest as the club seeks a replacement for Canberra-bound pivot Aidan Sezer.

Hodkinson, who will again partner Mitchell Pearce in the halves in the State of Origin decider at Suncorp, said he is close to finalising his future and was hopeful of making an official announcement before the game.

It has become apparent he won't be at the Belmore next season after he was hooked in the closing stages of the past two Canterbury games. The Bulldogs are likely to press ahead with a halves pairing of Moses Mbye and Josh Reynolds after one of their own targets, Kieran Foran, decided to honour his commitment to Parramatta.

The Bulldogs were never seriously in the running for Foran after the NRL rejected a request for a salary cap exemption for the Manly star.

Eels legend Peter Sterling revealed he played a role in luring Foran to the blue and golds. The deal was almost botched after Parramatta sought to remove a controversial clause in the contract which would have resulted in the New Zealand international receiving a payout of $1 million should he wish to leave at any time.

"I've spoken to Kieran during the course of this and one thing with Kieran that never changed was his belief in the footballing side of things," said Sterling on Triple M's Dead Set Legends.

"I think he's excited by the fact Parramatta have a host of good young players out there and you throw in Beau Scott and Michael Gordon around Anthony Watmough and Kieran Foran ... on the field they are going in the right direction.

"In his relationship with Brad Arthur and what he thinks will be the best for his football future, that never really wavered, despite all the problems over the last couple of weeks in getting the contract sorted."

Sterling ruled out playing a consultant role similar to that of Bob Fulton, who is helping rebuild the Sea Eagles.

"Brad Arthur doesn't need me. I speak to Brad every now and then ... he knows his stuff, he's a very good football coach," Sterling said.

I'd prefer Hodko to go to the Titans than the Knights.

Agree. Prefer Taylor, Martin , Nona , Cornish, in no particular order. In response to the Tyrone Robert article.

Id rather an inexperienced halves partnership than Roberts anyday, and tbh Id even prefer Sandow as crazy as it sounds

lol Tyrone Roberts is barely a first grader. Stop looking to sign mediocrity and start signing some real talent for christs sakes.

Sign Ash Taylor and let he and Kane Elgey develop a partnership. Think Foran and DCE. They could be one of the best halves pairings in the game if they are given the chance.

However, look at the Tigers pairing of Moses and Brooks. I definitely agree Taylor would be our best option if we missed out on Hodko, but we can't assume that an LG/Taylor pairing would be entirely fantastic. Just hope we get Hodkinson.

Blooming heck not Tyrone Roberts I think he is a step in the wrong direction and a big step at that, I am all for a experienced half but if it had to be Roberts I would prefer to develop a young pairing
