Davin Crampton named for Auckland Nines at Titans

    RHYS O’NEILL
    THE CAIRNS POST
    JANUARY 21, 2015 9:37AM

DAVIN Crampton’s resum é as rugby league’s ultimate ‘‘Mr Everything’’ will include the NRL Auckland Nines.

The Normanton product was yesterday named among the Gold Coast Titans’ forward pack selections for the NRL’s season-opening tournament.

His inclusion appears a clear pointer that the Northern Pride premiership winner is on the radar for a Round 1 debut.

At home nearly anywhere on the park, Crampton’s footwork and raw power appear perfectly suited to the sawn-off format.

Titans coach Neil Henry also included fellow newcomers Lachlan Burr, Kierran Moseley, Josh Hoffman and Matt Robinson, while stars Dave Taylor, Aidan Sezer and former Pride winger Kalifa Faifai Loa headline the squad.

Gold Coast’s schedule for the January 30 to February 1 Nines features matches against the Warriors, Wests Tigers and Canberra Raiders.

“It is a team with a great blend of speed out wide but a fair bit of mobility and size in the forwards,” Henry said.

“I think we have plenty of players suited to the open spaces of Nines football and the boys are keen to do well; it’s a great promotion for the game in New Zealand and here.

“The squad has been training very hard on fitness and skills and this is our first chance to put some of that into practice.

“It will be a good hit-out for the squad before we head to Toowoomba a week later for a trial against the Warriors in Toowoomba.”

The squad is subject to change as several players face injury battles, while Gordonvale’s Nate Myles and NSW lock Greg Bird were not considered.

It is believed Crampton, 26, is firmly in the mix for selection in the Titans centres, with Henry believed to be leaning toward playing his Brisbane Broncos Kiwi recruit Hoffman as his No.1.

That move could force William Zillman on to the wing or into the congested battle for a centre spot.

While official allocations have not been completed, Crampton will head to either Tweed or Burleigh in the Intrust Super Cup on the weeks he is not selected in the NRL.

Given he lives with two Seagulls players, it is believed Tweed are favourites to secure Crampton in 2015.

That could mean a Round 13 homecoming to Barlow Park in June to face the Pride should Crampton not be on first grade duties.

Titans star James Roberts left out of Indigenous All Stars voting after Surfers Paradise arrest
TRAVIS MEYN GOLD COAST BULLETIN JANUARY 23, 2015 8:05AM

A DRUNKEN Surfers Paradise arrest cost Gold Coast Titans excitement machine James Roberts $3000 — and an Indigenous All Stars jersey.

The Bulletin can reveal Roberts was left out of the voting process for the All Stars clash as he faced court and club-imposed sanctions after he was arrested in Surfers Paradise last October and charged with public nuisance and obstructing police.

The 21-year-old planned to fight the charges in Southport Magistrates Court and they were eventually dropped by police.

Roberts, who has been sacked by South Sydney and Penrith for disciplinary reasons, was still fined $3000 by the Titans over the incident and placed on a final warning for his behaviour.
But the repercussions of the arrest ran deeper than that.

As doubts hovered over his future, the NRL, with support from the Titans, decided to leave Roberts out of the list of players eligible for the exhibition match at Cbus Super Stadium on February 13.

The indigenous team is voted for by the public and it’s near certain Roberts would have been selected given his remarkable speed and tryscoring ability.

Five other Titans — Greg Bird, Ryan James, Josh Hoffman, Kierran Moseley and Brad Tighe — made the team while Dave Taylor has been selected in the NRL All Stars.

Bird was included in voting despite facing the Gold Coast’s disciplinary committee at the same time as Roberts after he was caught urinating in public.

An NRL spokesman said Roberts’ uncertain situation cost him a spot in the voting process.

“When the voting process began James was facing charges as well as a disciplinary hearing before his club,” he told the Bulletin.

“In view of that, it was determined that he would not be eligible for the public vote.”

While Roberts received his club-imposed sanctions on December 12, he was not added to the list of eligible players which were voted on between December 1 and January 9.

State of Origin duo Justin Hodges and Will Chambers will fill the centre positions in the team but Roberts would have made a handy bench player at worst.

While Roberts declined to discuss the situation, Ryan James, who will line up in his third All Stars clash, said he was disappointed his teammate wasn’t in the team but backed him to thrive in the Auckland Nines.

“Jimmy Roberts is an up- and-coming centre who’s excellent on his feet and lightning quick,” he said.

“I’m pretty sure he’ll be interesting to watch in the Nines. He’ll probably get a couple of tries.

“Hopefully he can take some good year into the year like he finished last year.”

Roberts has scored 16 tries in 28 NRL appearances and is set to play a major role in the rebirth of the Titans under new coach Neil Henry.

Absolutely Buzzing for 9s except the weather is looking terrible. It has been scorching in Auckland for the past few weeks however it is meant to pour down next weekend. Hoping that forecast changes!

Oh that's no good. Hope we get some decent weather. I guess it won't effect the broadcast but I feel for the fans there and the quality of footy.
