Top 8 winner to face PNG champ

THIS year's Vodafone Cup Top 8 winner will not only get the trophy, prizemoney and bragging rights but also a trip to Papua New Guinea to play their club competition champion.

This was revealed by Fiji National Rugby League chairman Reverend Immanuel Reuben who said it was something that the local champion side needed.

He said the competition between the Fiji champion club and the PNG champion club would be known as the Melanesian Cup.

"Our Top 8 winning club will go to PNG to play their club champion in the Melanesian Cup," Reuben said

"This will become an annual event and we are glad that local players will get a chance to go overseas as a team and compete."

Reuben said no overseas players would be included in the teams and only home-grown talent would play.

"This is something we wanted for a long time, a chance for our local players to play as a team overseas and give them international exposure.

"The concept would give our local clubs an added incentive in the competition and our local players a chance to impress at international level where they can prove their worth."
