Gold Coast Titans sponsor Pivotal Homes principal Michael Irwin to face court charged with grievous bodily harm
THE embattled Gold Coast Titans have suffered another setback with revelations the boss of one of the NRL club’s newest sponsors is set to stand trial over a violent attack at Surfers Paradise.
Just days after Pivotal Homes was announced as the Titans jersey sponsor for next year’s Auckland Nines campaign, it can be revealed the company’s principal Michael Irwin will face court next month charged with grievous bodily harm.
Titans chief executive Graham Annesley was only made aware of Mr Irwin’s court case on Thursday, just before flying out of the country for talks with “a potential major sponsor”.
“I was advised about it (Mr Irwin’s court case) through a media inquiry but it would be inappropriate for me to comment about personal matters that are before the court, where I understand there has been no conviction at this stage,” Mr Annesley said.
According to court documents, 53-year-old Mr Irwin is accused of punching and kicking a former business associate at the Circle on Cavill, in the heart of Surfers Paradise in July, 2012.
The complainant, Lloyd Ross, suffered a broken leg after he claimed he was “shoved back and punched in the left eye/cheek region”.
The Southport Court heard there was a “history of animosity and confrontation” between Mr Irwin and Mr Ross.
The Sunday Mail tried unsuccessfully to contact Mr Irwin through the Gold Coast law firm handling his defence.
