Brisbane Broncos under investigation for possible salary cap irregularities

THE Broncos are under investigation over $500,000 in possible salary-cap irregularities following the resignation of club legend Andrew Gee as football operations chief.

Queensland goes into Wednesday night’s Origin opener with the state’s flagship club in crisis with Gee’s controversial departure the prelude to an NRL salary cap probe.

News Corporation can reveal Broncos hierarchy have alerted NRL bosses to a number of serious cap-related issues involving Brisbane’s recent recruitment activities.

The NRL was notified of the potential problem last week and confirmed on Tuesday evening it will begin an immediate investigation into the Broncos’ handling of the salary-cap.

“The Brisbane Broncos have advised the NRL of some possible salary-cap irregularities and asked us to look at them which we will do,” an NRL spokesman said.

    GEE QUITS BRONCOS POST

Gee, a Broncos premiership player, has been on leave for the past fortnight since rumours emerged of potential irregularities in the Broncos’ salary cap.

The club confirmed on Tuesday that the 25-year Broncos veteran had resigned after News Corp first revealed last week Gee was set to sever ties with the club.

The NRL probe will involve the contracts of some of the biggest-name players in the NRL.

Recent dealings involving superstar recruit Ben Barba will be put under the microscope, although there is no suggestion the former Dally M winner is involved in any rorts.

News Corp understands the NRL probe will specifically examine third-party agreements and the fact at least one-big name player is out of pocket for a six-figure sum.

The player in question is allegedly owed money by the Broncos in relation to third-party sponsorships, but there is no suggestion Gee is guilty of orchestrating a salary-cap breach.

Gee took leave from the Broncos to consider his future. On Tuesday, he officially advised the Broncos he would be leaving the club where he first shot to prominence under then coach Wayne Bennett.

The shock move comes after the Broncos opted to restructure some of Gee’s many roles in the football department, with the hiring of Peter Nolan as list and recruitment manager last month.

Gee had hired Nolan, who was sacked by the club at the end of 2010, to separate the recruitment and list management from the day-to-day duties of the football manager.

Broncos CEO Paul White has yet to respond to calls about the salary cap probe.

Scott Czislowski, who has been the Broncos under-20s team manager since 2008, also fills the NRL welfare manager’s role at the club. He will immediately move into the team manager responsibility with the Broncos’ NRL squad.

Broncos boss Paul White did not return calls but the club confirmed Gee’s departure with a statement.

“The Broncos acknowledge the significant contribution Andrew Gee has made in his current role and in his former roles as both as a player and an administrator over a 25-year period,” the statement said.

“The club wishes both him and his family all the best for the future.”

    Wow.

So is Gee merely the fall guy?

Remember the owner of the Courier Mail owns the Broncos too. So it is a big deal here.

Coupled with the fact that the Broncos alerted the NRL this could be potentially damaging. The suspicion around third party deals does not surprise me. Being friends with a 'former bronco' (no names) I know for a fact that he was pursuing them for a owed third party deal from his tenure at the club (this was ongoing for years).

I'm surprised it's taken this long for something like this to surface, and it's not because I think they're crooks either.

It's more of a case they've kept the monopoly in Queensland for so long. All that cash 'n third party deals available, the bookwork (financial) would get sloppy over time. Which would eventually allow a breach to come about.

You only have to look at their past stars. They've would've thrown anything at some of them to retain their services.

There have been stories around for years that the players contracts (containing the fifures usd in the cap) were well under what they were being paid. Wasn't there a group of business guys called the Thoroughbreds paying a number of the players top ups? Not strictly illegal but....
I always like the comments like "there is no suggestion of Gee orchestrating a salary cap breach". Him leaving after 25 years and this story breaking the same day must be coincidental then.

Broncos speak out over salary cap

    AAP
    9:24am Wed 28th May, 2014

Brisbane chief executive Paul White says, if substantiated, allegations of irregularities in the Broncos' NRL salary cap could amount to $450,000 over three seasons.

White said on Wednesday the club had been provided information from an external party of potential irregularities in its handling of the salary cap over the 2012-14 period.

He told reporters the Broncos had self-reported the concerns to the NRL and was comfortable the way it was handling the matter.

Allegations of the Broncos breaching the game's strict salary cap rules came to light on Tuesday after the club's operations manager Andrew Gee resigned.

"From our club's point of view we've received some information from an external source surrounding salary cap irregularities," said White.

"We've passed that information over to the NRL in full who will now conduct a full investigation ... we will co-operate fully and hope there's a timely resolution."

Reports have speculated that the irregularities relate to third party deals for certain players, but White refused to comment on which individuals may be involved.

"I'm not going to speculate on individuals because that's not appropriate at this time," he said.

I wonder if the Broncos are using political tactics, if they chose the time to release this, during Origin 1. So it's like a smokescreen.

We'd have to find another four or so clubs in the same boat for us to make the finals.

CHEAT CAP AND YOU'LL BE CAUGHT, NRL WARNS
    FOXSPORTS.COM.AU – MAY 29, 2014
    POSTED IN: BRISBANE BRONCOS, NEWS

Cheat the salary cap and you will be caught.

That was the warning from NRL integrity unit boss Jim Doyle as the code began an investigation into $450,000 worth of payment discrepancies at the Brisbane Broncos.

Doyle’s stance came as it emerged fallen Brisbane operations chief Andrew Gee also resigned as a Broncos leagues club director in the lead-up to the NRL’s probe.

ASIC documents obtained by The Courier-Mail show Gee severed ties with Broncos leagues on April 28, just weeks before mysteriously taking stress leave from his football duties.

Salary cap auditor Jamie L’Oste Brown arrived in Brisbane on Wednesday as Deloittes forensic accountants examined the Broncos’ financial records for the past three years.
