Default Mead chooses Maroons over Blues

    April 19, 2014 ↔ Zero Tackle

David Mead is the latest NRL star to spark an eligibility debate with the Titansí man-of-the-moment revealing his preference to represent Queensland in State of Origin. Fresh from his scorching 99-metre solo try to sink the Broncos, Mead can illustrate why he is a potential Origin star against Penrith on Monday night at Centrebet Stadium.

Mead has already had a taste of international football, playing for Papua New Guinea at last yearís World Cup, but the Titans flyer admits he dreams of playing Origin.

And thanks to the codeís revamped representative eligibility laws, the door is ajar for Mead to play in the codeís toughest arena.

The 25-year-old is permitted one election change between World Cup cycles. Under Originís eligibility criteria, Mead ticks four out of five boxes for NSW, effectively qualifying him for the Blues.

But there is one small problem . . . like Keary, Meadís heart is with the Maroons.

& just like Keary neither will be playing Origin anytime soon

I'd be happy to see him join the Maroons. But as Pete said, it won't be anytime soon..

I didn't know 'heart' (bandwagon) was one of and the most weighted of the eligibility rules....??

He's not good enough for Origin, wouldn't get a run at most NRL clubs....

Don't get me wrong, I've been a huge fan of his since his days in U20s as David Moore. But he is just not good enough...

Lets say by some miracle, he gains the ability and skills of an Inglis, he STILL wont play origin, because he doesn't want to play for the only state he's eligible for....

I really don't see why he isn't rep worthy. Harsh on Mead.

I'd love to see him as a Maroon but new rules are rules it seems.

I wait with interest when one day one of these passionate Maroons is forced to play for the Blues.

Although this has happened for real pre-Origin many times.

As much as I am Queenslander and a supporter of rugby league in PNG, imho he should not eligible for Origin because he has played for PNG no matter what the rules may say this year. If his situation makes him a Blue then Blue he is but changing country like toilet paper doesn't cut it with me at all and just because he likes Queensland doesn't make him a Queensland either.

I like sushi but that doesn't make me a salmon.

Yeah, I guess you're right, Mate. Enough of the rule bending.

But at the same.. He does have the ticker to play Origin, and wouldn't look too bad in Maroon either.

I'm pretty sure there are a few Blues players who wish they played for Qld.

Am I alone here in saying he is not origin quality??
In what world would he pass as an origin winger/fullback?

The thing is, he wouldn't get the gig as Fullback in a Origin Squad. It'd be the Wing if anywhere. You're the one speculating he'd be pushing for Fullback.

He'd only ever play on the wing, so what does that matter? Preferred spot or not, we all know what position he would play at in Origin level so thats that.jpeg

You said Mead wouldn't get a run at most NRL clubs? Please elaborate. Seriously please I really want to hear this. Pls.

For starters, we can agree that he will NEVER play SOO... He doesn't qualify for QLD and doesn't want to play for NSW...right?

The reason I'm talking about fb as well as wing is because he is our current fb... And as for the argument of "he wouldn't get the gig as Fullback in a Origin Squad. It'd be the Wing if anywhere" Well he won't get a gig in an origin squad in the first place for that to be an issue...

These are players that I feel would get a run over mead for wing or fb at club level...

    Cowboys-
    Morgan
    Winterstein
    Coote
    Broncos-
    Barba
    Hoffman
    Vidot
    Knights-
    Uate
    Boyd
    Manly-
    Taufua
    Stewart
    Williams
    Bulldogs-
    Perret
    Inu
    Stanley
    Morris
    Eels-
    Hayne
    Radradra
    Toutai
    Hopoate
    Tigers-
    Tedesco
    Nofoaluma
    Richards
    Koroibete
    Moltzen
    Roosters-
    Tuivasa-Sheck
    Tupou
    Minichiello
    Souths-
    Inglis
    Goodwin
    Merrit
    Sharks-
    Gordon
    Gardner
    Dragons-
    Dugan
    Nightingale
    Morris
    Raiders-
    Milford
    Lee
    Robinson
    Storm-
    Slater
    Fonua
    Waqa
    Tonumaipea
    Warriors-
    Tomkins
    Locke
    Vatuvei
    Fisiiahi
    Panthers-
    Mansour

Hence why I think he wouldn't get a run at most NRL clubs....

Now I'm sure everyone has their own opinion on the matter, I just seriously thought I wasn't alone...lol

The funny part is that he is probably the best player at the titans in positions 1-5....lol

Mate you're the only one talking fullback. Fullback is the strongest position in the NRL and there is only 1 in each team..take out all the fullbacks and change this discussion to purely wingers and your list falls apart completely. Even the wingers you've listed are appalling IMO..Fonua?! Merrit? VIdot?! lol. Mead would start in nearly all NRL teams on the wing.

Sorry dude..Just can't seem to agree with ya in the slightest. All good though, good effort with the list.

Agree with your call on him being our best 1-5.

David Mead better than Nathan Merrit??

Even if you take out fullbacks, i still think he only starts at 5 of the other 15 clubs... My opinion though, ill just be watching him very closely this weekend, lets hope he proves me wrong....

GCT_89, congratulations on dissecting a rather trivial topic that will most likely never come to fruition, and try 'n turn it into something more than what it should be. Top Marks, were does a bloke sign up for the Fan Club?
