Sheens to continue as Kangaroos coach

World Cup-winning coach Tim Sheens has been re-appointed coach of the Holden Kangaroos ahead of a representative season that will see Australia play New Zealand in Sydney for the first time in six years.

NRL Head of Football, Mr Todd Greenberg, said Sheens had accepted a one-year extension to lead the Holden Kangaroos into the May 2 Test against New Zealand at Allianz Stadium and the end-of-season Four Nations tournament to be played in Australia and New Zealand.

“Tim has achieved a remarkable record of success as Kangaroos coach and we are excited he has agreed to continue in that role in 2014,” Greenberg said.

The new deal extends Sheens tenure as Holden Kangaroos coach into a sixth season.

In that time the Holden Kangaroos have won the World Cup, two Four Nations titles in the United Kingdom, five consecutive mid-year Tests against New Zealand and two end-of-season Tests against the Kiwis.

“This is a role that means a lot to me. It’s a great honour to coach the Kangaroos and to work with the calibre of players we have in the side,” Sheens said.

“There’s a lot to look forward to this year with the mid-year Test back in Sydney and a Four Nations on home soil.

“It is a great opportunity for fans here to come and enjoy international Rugby League and support the Kangaroos.”

The May 2 Test at Allianz Stadium will be the Holden Kangaroos’ first match since their victory over New Zealand in the final of the 2013 World Cup last November.

Tickets for the first Test in Sydney between the Holden Kangaroos and New Zealand since 2008 will go on sale to the public from 10am today.

For the first time, a women’s match featuring an All Stars team and Indigenous All Stars team will also be played as the curtain-raiser to a Kangaroos-Kiwis Test.

Tickets are available through Ticketek at www.ticketek.com.au/NRLTest.
