THESE bilbies will be glad to see Nate Myles’ beard go, but not as much as his wife Tessa James.
The Titans co-captain showed even the toughest of men can get scared of a little marsupial when he got up close to the critters at Dreamworld yesterday and found out they can bite.
Myles will face his furry friends again on Friday when he loses his famed facial hair, regarded as one of the best beards in the NRL, for the Save the Bilby Fund.
“The wife’s more excited than the bilbies at the moment,” Myles said.
“I like it but a lot of people don’t.”
Myles joined in the fight to save the threatened species after meeting bilbies during a State of Origin visit through the theme park and learning of their plight.
“I sort of got a bit cranky ... I’m a lover of all animals and I had no idea of the situation the bilby was in,” he said.
Save the Bilby chief executive Kevin Bradley said there were only 400 to 600 bilbies left in Queensland.
“It’s really important and we need as much help as we can get,” Mr Bradley said.
The shave will be held in Brisbane’s Queen Street Mall as part of National Threatened Species Day which commemorates the loss of the last Tasmanian tiger in Hobart Zoo in 1936.
Zoos and wildlife park representatives will converge on the mall with a host of snappy and slimy species and feathered and furry friends to encourage the public to get their paws behind the cause.
Hairdresser Stefan Ackerie will help Myles farewell his prized beard.
