    Default 2014: Country vs City

NRL Head of Football Todd Greenberg is confident a successful Country-City match will be just another part of a bumper 2014 for "one of the greatest competitions across the world."

Greenberg was in Dubbo on Wednesday to officially launch the Country-City match to be played at Apex Oval on May 4 and after visiting the ground in 2010 when the Canterbury Bulldogs played the Canberra Raiders in a pre-season trial, he said he was hugely impressed by what he'd seen on his return.

"We played a trial here and it was wonderful," he said.

"Our captain at the time was Andrew Ryan, a local boy, and we had a great crowd that day and it was clear to me this is a wonderful venue for football and our players and athletes will have an outstanding experience when they get to play here."

Greenberg also took time to say he was very happy with the state of the game after the hugely successful and popular Auckland Nines competition and admitted he was very excited for the NRL season proper to get under way.

“I think there’s lots of positives for the game, you can see the way we launched the season with the Auckland Nines, that was a tremendous success and we’ve got some huge games in the Telstra premiership which starts in a few

    weeks,” he said.

“This is one of the greatest competitions across the world by way of competitiveness and at any time a team can knock off any other team and I think that’s one of the great advantages of rugby league and our expectations are it’s going to be a huge year in 2014.”

With the Australian Rugby League Commission now in it’ second year and the popularity of the sport ensuring money continues to flow into the game, Greenberg admitted it was vital that regional and rural areas also benefit.

“The Commission is starting to establish some really good processes and we’re improving governance across our clubs and all those things are foundation pieces which will help grow our game,” he said.

“We’ve got a significant financial deal out of the broadcasting but what we’ve got to do is make sure we invest that and invest it across the whole of the game to make sure it continues to thrive and that includes reaching areas like this.”

Greenberg also announced funding would soon be available for clubs in country areas through an initiative with the NSW Government.

“Next month we’ll launch that to assist local clubs and communities with infrastructure and it’s the start of a much broader program to grow the game across the whole of the country,” he said.

“We have great expectations of bush football and trying to help communities like this so that will be one step forward for us.”

I notice it is referred to COUNTRY v CITY now, as opposed to CITY v COUNTRY which is how I always referred to it.

Makes sense because Country is the edge.
