Default 2014 Anzac Test: AUSTRALIA vs NEW ZEALAND

New Zealand Rugby League is optimistic of hosting next year's landmark ANZAC test, after conceding this year's test.

The Kiwis and Kangaroos will meet in Sydney for the first time since 2008, with the one-off fixture to be held on May 2nd.

NZRL CEO Phil Holden says he's extremely keen to have the game back in New Zealand next year.

Holden says the centenary of the Gallipoli landings means there's a huge emotional connection with the game.

New Zealand and Australia will co-host the 2017 World Cup, with all of the Kiwis pool games to be played on home soil.

The Holden Kangaroos will defend their World Cup title on home soil with the Rugby League International Federation tonight announcing Australia and New Zealand will host the 2017 Rugby League World Cup.

The NRL has also confirmed international Rugby League will return to Sydney in 2014 with the May 2 Test between Australia and New Zealand to be held at Allianz Stadium.

It will be the first time the Holden Kangaroos have played the Kiwis in Sydney since 2008 with tickets going on sale to NRL Club Members at 10am on Monday, February 24, and to the general public at 10am on Wednesday, February 26.

The Rugby League World Cup was last held in Australia in 2008.

“Together with New Zealand we will stage a World Cup that will capture the imagination of fans and leave a lasting legacy for the sport,” said NRL Chief Executive, Mr Dave Smith.

“It’s such an exciting time for the international game and members and fans across Australia and New Zealand now have a special opportunity to be part of it.

“There are unrivalled opportunities to continue growing international Rugby League over the next four years and for the Kangaroos that starts with the Sydney Test against New Zealand in May.”

The Sydney Test will be the first match for the Holden Kangaroos since their stunning victory over New Zealand in the final of the 2013 World Cup at Old Trafford, in Manchester, last November.

The Test will be part of an exciting round of representative football that also includes the Pacific Test between Fiji and Samoa at Penrith on Saturday, May 3 – with the winner to compete in the end-of-season Four Nations tournament in Australia and New Zealand – as well as the AAMI Country-City match at Dubbo on Sunday, May 4.

For the first time, a women’s match featuring an All Stars team and Indigenous All Stars team will also be played as the curtain-raiser to a Kangaroos-Kiwis Test.

Ticket information for the Test between the Holden Kangaroos and Kiwis at Sydney’s Allianz Stadium on Friday, May 2 is as follows:

Exclusive: Sonny Bill Williams set to boycott the Kangaroos-Kiwis Test match
    http://www.news.com.au/sport/nrl/exc...-1226892630830
SUPERSTAR forward Sonny Bill Williams is to boycott the Kangaroos-Kiwis Test match on Friday week in a major blow to ticket sales.

The Sydney Roosters second-rower is still furious at being implicated in a sleeping pill and energy drink scandal on last year’s World Cup tour in England.

The Kiwi champion will be out of the country on a short overseas holiday from this Saturday, a day before the Kiwi team is named and players go into camp.

It was reported in New Zealand after the tour that SBW and his room-mate, Manly five-eighth Kieran Foran, had been identified in an internal investigation.

They were later cleared of any wrong doing following the probe by the NZRL.

The fact their names were splashed across the front pages of sports section in New Zealand and Australia infuriated the pair.
Unnamed players had appeared “dozy and half asleep” but both SBW and Foran have strongly denied any knowledge of the substance use.

SBW prides himself on his natural fitness and incredible physique.

His withdrawal is a huge blow for the NRL’s Test promotion which has already seen tickets heavily discounted because of sluggish sales.

Manly and New Zealand five eighth Keiran Foran is expected to be sidelined for a month with a knee injury he acquired during the Sea Eagles controversial win over the Cowboys on Friday night.

Foran too is in doubt for the game with a right knee injury suffered last weekend against the Cowboys.

Previously the NRL has insisted players apply for an exemption to be ruled out of representative football as is the case with Jamie Lyon at Manly.

As there is no club football on the weekend of the Test, SBW will be free to play again the following weekend.

The New Zealand rugby league chief executive Phil Holden refused to comment on SBW’s withdrawal on Tuesday.

Coach Stephen Kearney will hold a telephone hook-up with the media on Wednesday afternoon to discuss the selection issues.

They have yet to be officially informed SBW will not be available.

It was to be his final Test match in the Kiwi jersey before switching to rugby union.

Parramatta’s boom forward Manu Ma’u is in strong contention to replace SBW.

If Foran is ruled out with his knee injury, there has been speculation that Benji Marshall could be recalled to play five-eighth outside Shaun Johnson.

But Kiwi sources say it is highly unlikely to happen.

The Australian side will also be named on Sunday night along with the City and Country teams that play in Dubbo on the weekend of the Test match.

    We choose: Australian Test team

Tim Sheens take note: After hours of form research, checking on and not a small amount of soul-searching, NRL.com has come up with the following Kangaroos team for the one-off Test at Allianz Stadium on Friday May 2. The national selectors will name their squad at 5pm this Sunday.

    1. Billy Slater

'Billy the Kid' fought back hard from a knee injury to take his place in last year's World Cup final. His two tries in the Kangaroos' 34-2 win over the Kiwis was crucial in Australia reclaiming the 'Best in the World' mantle. While this year he has been more accustomed to setting up tries rather than scoring them (six try assists), the Storm fullback and 24-Test veteran is the unrivalled choice in the No.1.

    2. Brett Morris

Only 27, Brett Morris has already managed to cross for his 100th try in the Red V earlier this year. The 12-Test incumbent is renowned for his try scoring finesse and his nine tries in five Tests in last year's World Cup is a testament to that. His defence will not be lacking either – he has only missed one tackle per game in 2014. That's an important statistic considering he is more than likely to go head to head with 'The Beast' Manu Vatuvei.

    3. Greg Inglis

South Sydney coach Michael Maguire was posed the question earlier in the year: "Have you ever considering playing Greg Inglis – one of the world's best centres – in that position?" Evidence of his pure value and versatility to the Rabbitohs, Maguire has gotten the best out of the Australian Test centre at fullback. While he's undeniably handy to have if ever Slater goes down, Inglis has crossed the white stripe 20 times in 23 appearances in the green and gold jersey.

    4. Jarryd Hayne

If loyalty exists in the Australian Test team then Tim Sheens and co will ignore veteran Justin Hodges when it comes to naming their side next Sunday. Hayne was the equal top try scorer in last year's World Cup and has been phenomenal in a rejuvenated Eels side in 2014. Hayne has tallied five try assists, line breaks, and tries this season.

    5. Darius Boyd

There's no mistake as to why Tim Sheens persists with four fullbacks in his back five. The Newcastle No.1 has been bolted onto the flank for the Kangaroos since 2008. His 16 Tests for Australia come courtesy of his much fancied work for Queensland and while Newcastle isn't having the best of seasons, we suspect Boyd will be making another May Test appearance.

    6. Johnathan Thurston

The green-and-gold headgear will need a good dusting off because it goes without saying that Thurston will be picked; he has four man-of-the-match awards from the World Cup and the Golden Boot in his pool room at home. While the Cowboys are failing to play up to their potential once again, Thurston has still produced eight try assists for the North Queensland faithful.

    7. Cooper Cronk

While Melbourne's big three may not be as consistent in 2014 as they once were, when it comes to the big show they all lift. Cooper Cronk has been the Storm's shining light so far - his sublime strike rate of 10 try assists in six games in 2014 - without a stable five-eighth outside of him - is proof of his absolute class. On song, Thurston and Cronk are one of the more dangerous combinations in rugby league.

    8. Matthew Scott

Any selector looking for one player to set the foundations for victory in the first 20 minutes of a game would be foolish to overlook Matthew Scott. The Cowboys' prop has kicked off the season with 16 tackle breaks and an average of 141.1 metres per game is evidence of his workhorse capabilities. Scott will be essential if the game comes down to a grind.

    9. Cameron Smith (c)

Cameron Smith has missed one game for Melbourne in 2014... they lost 40-12. The man is astoundingly influential for his team, his state - and his country. His capabilities in defence and attack are that of a leader and the reason he has the little 'c' next to his name in all three teams he represents each year. Will be the first one picked for the Kangaroos.

    10. James Tamou

Although he was a member of the World Cup-winning squad last year, many may be left wondering how Tamou regains in his spot for the Kangaroos in 2014. Well below his best in club games, averaging 118 metres thus far, Tamou only just managed to hold his starting spot in our 17 ahead of Andrew Fifita. His selection in the May Test could be the kick up the backside Tamou needs – vital for NSW when State of Origin rolls around in late May.

    11. Sam Thaiday

He may currently be on the shelf with a calf complaint but you would be wrong to think that Sam Thaiday is going to pull out of the upcoming showdown. The 23-Test veteran hasn't been exactly barnstorming in 2014, averaging less than 100 metres per game, although when you're surrounded by quality forwards like the Broncos have you're inevitably going to have to wait your turn to do something outstanding.

    12. Greg Bird

An absolute menace who brings much-needed niggle to the team, Bird is one of just three NSW players to be pencilled into our run-on side. The Titans' co-captain has racked up almost a kilometre of running metres in 2014. He's not a bad goal-kicking option either – just ask his Melbourne Kangaroos teammates.

    13. Corey Parker

While his starting position comes courtesy of Paul Gallen's injury woes this season, there's no denying Corey Parker's ability to turn a game on its head. Loved by all in the land of NRL Fantasy for his big numbers and involvement, Parker has managed to sustain his form in the front row this season. His move back to lock in the Australian side should come to no-one's surprise as he is more than capable of filling arguably his best position.

    Interchange

    14. Daly Cherry-Evans

What do you do with the next big thing when the likes of Thurston and Cronk are ahead of him? Put him on the bench. Daly Cherry-Evans – or DCE as he's come to be known – proved his utility value at Origin level when he came in at lock throughout the 2013 series. While he had to toil hard to snatch the bench utility role from Robbie Farah's hands in the World Cup, DCE has pushed streets ahead since via his match-winning capabilities.

    15. Paul Gallen

While Sharks fans weren't quite able to sing 'Up Up Cronulla' after last week's game against the Roosters, they were all definitely excited that their captain Paul Gallen was finally back. His three offloads, 32 tackles, 19 runs for 140 metres, two line break assists and six tackle breaks last weekend should be enough to seal a bench spot.

    16. Andrew Fifita

While it remains a mystery where he'll end up in 2015, there's only one place where you will find Andrew Fifita next Friday night – Allianz Stadium. While a two-week suspension would've hurt, Fifita has shaken off the recent controversy in his typical barnstorming fashion and should consider himself unlucky not to be starting. With 155.4 metres per game, he'll bring plenty of X-Factor.

    17. Nate Myles

Just gets the nod over Anthony Watmough and Matt Gillett when it came down to deciding the final bench spot. Myles' 108.5 metres per game for the Titans this season, plus his aggressive defence, could be enough to see him warm the pine.

We choose: New Zealand Test team

Stephen Kearney take note: After hours of form research, checking on and not a small amount of soul-searching, NRL.com has come up with the following Kiwis team for the one-off Test at Allianz Stadium on Friday May 2. The national selectors will name their squad at 5pm this Sunday.

    1. Roger Tuivasa-Sheck

When a side is shaken to its core by injuries to key players including Kieran Foran and Issac Luke, massive changes are inevitable. Consider this game then as a litmus test for the man earmarked to replace former Golden Boot winner Anthony Minichiello at the Roosters next year, Roger Tuivasa-Sheck. Young RTS demonstrated his capabilities of filling the role with a 360-degree step last weekend. His 138.8 metres per game in 2014 is a testament to his growing ability.

    2. Jason Nightingale

Nightingale, or Gypsy to Red V teammates, seems to have fallen out of favour when it comes to the NZ Test team in recent times. His form in 2014 though is way too hard to ignore. Even without Foran going down with a medial ligament injury to his knee, Nightingale would've been in our side. Four tries in seven games for the Dragons this year should be enough for Gypsy to make a comeback.

    3. Dean Whare

Dean Whare has carved a niche for himself in the Kiwi side over the past two years. Having eight caps to his name already for the Kiwis from just 57 first-grade games is a remarkable effort. The Penrith centre has proven a hit at the foot of the mountains in 2014 with three tries, three line breaks assists and 14 tackle breaks to his name – the perfect provider for any winger outside him.

    4. Shaun Kenny-Dowall

Shaun Kenny-Dowall had to take the good with the bad in 2013. Sure, he won a premiership with the Roosters but he broke his jaw in the grand final, ruling him out of the World Cup. With Bryson Goodwin getting plenty of game time on the wing for the Rabbitohs in recent weeks, Kenny-Dowall has played admirably in a Roosters side warming to the task in recent weeks. His match-winning try-scoring double last weekend against Cronulla will have helped his chances.

    5. Manu Vatuvei

Hasn't set the world on fire at club level but is too good to overlook on the big stage. 'The Beast' is not bending the line as much as in recent years, and has just five tries so far for the Warriors. He will have to be outstanding here if he's going to add to his 24 Tests down the line when others return from injury.

    6. Josh Hoffman

Brisbane's stop-gap solution at five-eighth looks set to do the same for the Kiwis. While Thomas Leuluai would've been five-eighth under any other circumstance after Foran's injury, it should be remembered the Kiwis will also be without Issac Luke. Leuluai is only one man, so it is now up to Josh Hoffman to step up to the plate. This could be a much-needed confidence booster for Hoffman.

    7. Shaun Johnson

Shaun Johnson is a rocks-or-diamonds kind of player. He will do something amazing - just look at the Auckland Nines highlights reels - then he will inexplicably come up with a clanger. Luckily for New Zealand he is more often brilliant than baffling, and they've got him for the long run, with no-one remotely close to challenging him for the halfback spot. Expect to see more diamonds from Johnson as his Test appearances accumulate and he matures.

    8. Jared Waerea-Hargreaves

Waerea-Hargreaves is a part of the furniture nowadays when it comes to the Kiwis side. The Roosters' firebrand has continued to fire on all cylinders since the World Cup and his country's chances hinge on him if they're going to win the game. Sounds like a 1980s action movie doesn't it? Regardless, the proof is in the pudding with Waerea Hargreaves. Has averaged 93.6 metres and 28 tackles in 2014.

    9. Thomas Leuluai

While he won't admit it, New Zealand's Mr. Fix It Thomas Leuluai will be thrown around for a couple of positions before he's settled in. With Issac Luke and Kieran Foran injured, Leuluai has been earmarked (depending on who you talk to) for both positions. Leuluai played only a couple of minutes in the World Cup last year because of injury so look for him to make amends. Luke will be sorely missed pre-game too, meaning Leuluai will have to lift in the haka.

    10. Jesse Bromwich

Does Jesse Bromwich get tired? Already for the Melbourne Storm this year Bromwich has run well over a kilometre on the footy field at a rate of 150 toiling metres per game. His 15 tackle breaks and 10 offloads are a testament to how much the 24-year-old prop has come along in the past four years.

    11. Simon Mannering

Captain Mannering is the defensive king the Kiwis team sorely missed this time last year. Accustomed to fitting in competently at centre and second row, Mannering has killed it in 2014 with an average of 30 tackles per game. While his club side are struggling, Mannering will bring great positivity to the national arena.

    12. Alex Glenn

With Sonny Bill Williams pledging his allegiance to Union in 2015, the Kiwis have chosen to go down another path and not consider Williams for the Test. Enter the much-deserving Alex Glenn. His 121.3 metres for the Broncos demonstrates his classiness in light of the great players he competes with in club footy.

    13. Elijah Taylor

You're better off asking Elijah Taylor about what position he can't play competently. There's a reason why Ivan Cleary chased the former Warrior to come to Penrith. He has the speed and prowess to break a game, playmaking capabilities when needed and his defence has been remarkable in 2014 – punctuated by his average of 40 tackles per game for the Panthers.

    Interchange

    14. Manu Ma'u

He is already a Parramatta favourite, so it will be no surprise if Manu Ma'u completes his journey from the doghouse to the penthouse next Friday night at Allianz Stadium. Has only played seven NRL games but has delivered much-needed aggression and intensity for his team. Expect Stephen Kearney to unleash Ma'u's raw passion on the tiring Kangaroo forwards.

    15. Ben Matulino

Ben Matulino has become almost an automatic selection for the Kiwis when available in a short space of time. The extremely reliable prop, Matulino has been one of the Warriors' best since making the jump to the NYC in 2008. Will line up for his 20th Test if picked.

    16. Frank-Paul Nu'uausala

There's a reason they call him the Wrecking Ball. Never one to back down from a grinding game of footy, Franky-Paul will easily account for any opponent when given the chance. While his minutes are down this year for the Roosters, expect him to make up for lost time when it comes to the black and white jersey.

    17. Sam Moa

When the Roosters signed Sam Moa for the 2013 season no-one thought much of it. With the likes of Jennings, Sonny Bill and Maloney joining the ranks, Moa was something of an afterthought. Until he played, that is. Unlucky not to have won the Clive Churchill medal in last year's Grand Final, Moa has broken the old adage that front-rowers don't score tries in 2014, after crossing for three of his own already.
