Thaiday axed as Broncos captain

Sam Thaiday has stood down as Brisbane Broncos captain for 2014.

The Kangaroos forward had led the club for the past two seasons since the retirement of Darren Lockyer.

The Broncos struggled into the finals in eighth spot in 2012 before missing out last year when they slumped to 12th place, the worst finish in their 25-year history.

"The coach thought it best for myself and my team if I don't have added responsibility of captain," Thaiday said.

Corey Parker is expected to be named as Thaiday's replacement.

Big difference from stripped and stood down. I feel sad for Sam he seemed to enjoy the role and I don't think he was bad at it.

I guess Parker is a good option. But captaincy issues are always delicate.

Dual Captaincy seems to be the new thing. While i don't like it, at least we can say Titans pioneered it.

Anything is possible in 2015 or even 2014. You know how contracts are.

It'd be highly unusual for a club to stand in an assistants way between a head coaching role.

People also reckon Bennett may return to the Broncos. Maybe a good way to wind up the career.
