A GOLD Coast Titan NRL 2014 recruit was charged with obstructing police and drinking in a public place after an incident in Maryborough just before midnight on New Year's Eve.

Former Melbourne Storm centre Maurice Blair, 29, will face Maryborough Magistrates Court on January 7.

Obstructing police? Well, I'll wait to hear the story on this one, but if this is the biggest NRL player alcohol related story doing the rounds after NYE, then I am pretty happy that the media can't find anything else to pump into the usual media-storm non-event that they like to do with the NRL.

and will chase anything and blow it out of proportion to make a story

In saying that players need to be smarter off the field they are wide open in terms of there NRL profile and media will always be sniffing around

Like if a rugby league player does something wrong, they say NRL or Rugby League. if its AFL or soccer, its football player.

Admittedly though, Maurice picked a good ****hole to find some strife (that's if there's any truth to the article). But I guess a bloke doesn't have much choice about where he's born 'n bred. For that fact, I'm prepared to cut him some slack.

Meanwhile, Blair handed himself in to Southport police after Maryborough Magistrate John Smith refused to excuse his appearance in court today.

Blair was arrested on New Year's Eve and charged with drinking liquor on Wharf Street and obstructing a police officer.

The 29-year-old former Penrith Panthers and Melbourne Storm centre was given watch-house bail and ordered to appear in the Maryborough Magistrates Court today.

This morning lawyer Travis George, acting as town agent for Moloney MacCallum Lawyers, indicated Blair intended to plead guilty and asked the case be transferred to the Gold Coast.

The lawyer also routinely asked for Blair's appearance to be excused from court as the new recruit was in pre-season training on the Gold Coast.

But the magistrate refused and ordered a warrant be issued for Blair's arrest.

Moloney MacCallum co-principal Campbell MacCallum said he was disappointed by the magistrate's decision.

Blair will face Southport Magistrates Court this afternoon.

He is understood to be pleading guilty.
