Nines players named for North Harbour
Monday 3 February 2014 4:07 PM
All but three of the 16 players named in the Vodafone Warriors’ NRL Auckland Nines squad will feature in the first of the club’s three NRL trials this Sunday (February 09).
The North Harbour Stadium clash against the Gold Coast Titans (4.00pm kick-off) is followed by the ‘Clash of the Warriors’ against the Wigan Warriors in Hamilton on February 12 (7.30pm kick-off) and a final trial against the Brisbane Broncos at Forsyth Barr Stadium in Dunedin (3.00pm kick-off).
Sandwiched in between will be the Dick Smith NRL Auckland Nines at Eden Park on February 15 and 16.
Of the players named for the sold-out tournament, try-scoring machine Konrad Hurrell makes a return to the scene where he excelled in his first taste of NRL football in the last trial the Vodafone Warriors played in Albany against the Titans in 2012.
Most of the other outside backs named for the Nines have also been selected including NRL players Glen Fisiiahi, Ngani Laumape and Carlos Tuimavave plus Vodafone Junior Warriors stars David Fusitua, Solomone Kata and Tuimoala Lolohea. The other Nines players named are forwards Raymond Faitala-Mariner, Charlie Gubb, Sebastine Ikahihifo, Sione Lousi, Suaia Matagi and Dominique Peyroux.
“We have a lot of football in front of us in the space of eight days with the trials against the Titans and Wigan as well as the Nines so it’s a bit of a jigsaw puzzle putting all our sides together,” said Vodafone Warriors head coach Matt Elliott.
“For this trial we are looking to use most of our Nines players, some of our NYC players and also three players from our New South Wales Cup group. As usual it’s a chance for a whole range of players to show us what they can do and for us to have a look at players in different roles.
“We’re really looking forward to playing at North Harbour Stadium again. It’s a great chance for fans all around Auckland to get along to see some NRL football as we build up to the season proper.”
Another feature of the squad is the inclusion of Vodafone Junior Warriors Mason, Lino, Metia Lisati, Sam Lisone and England Under-18 captain Jordan Baldwinson, who was signed by the club from Leeds along with Mason Tonks.
Former Vodafone Junior Warriors Agnatius Paasi, Abraham Papalii and Micheal Sio, now contracted to the Vodafone Warriors’ New South Wales Cup side, will also have game time.
The squad for the North Harbour Stadium trial is: Jordan Baldwinson, Ray Faitala-Mariner, Glen Fisiiahi, David Fusitua, Charlie Gubb, Konrad Hurrell, Sebastine Ikahihifo, Solomone Kata, Ngani Laumape, Mason Lino, Metia Lisati, Sam Lisone, Tuimoala Lolohea, Sione Lousi, Suaia Matagi, Agnatius Paasi, Abraham Papalii, Nathaniel Peteru, Dominique Peyroux, Michael Sio, Carlos Tuimavave, Albert Vete.

any one know of ideas for a stream?
2 years ago when we played NZ, the full trial was available on the nrl website a day later IIRC?
With the NRL having their own production department these days, they really need to ensure all trials are covered.
I have no news about it, but hope there is something fans can enjoy rather than untimely tweets with little info.
The pre-season has really snuck up on me!

New recruits Brad Tighe, Kalifa FaiFai Loa and Siuatonga Likiliki have been handed the first chance to impress in the iSelect Titans’ backline for the club’s opening trial match against the New Zealand Warriors on Sunday.
Tighe (Penrith Panthers) and Likiliki (Newcastle Knights) will both line-up in the starting centres, while former North Queensland Cowboys flyer Kalifa FaiFai Loa has been selected on the wing in Titans Head Coach John Cartwright’s first squad for 2014.
Former Bulldogs NYC Under-20s stand-out Paul Carter, the son of premiership winning Penrith five-eighth Steve Carter, has been named as starting hooker in his first match in Titans colours.
Former Melbourne Storm centre Maurice Blair and former Rabbitohs NYC Under-20s halfback Christian Hazard have also been selected to make their unofficial Titans debuts from the interchange bench.
Rising playmakers Aidan Sezer and Albert Kelly will again form the club’s halves combination, while prop Matt White will play his first match in 12 months after undergoing a knee reconstruction.
The Titans squad leaves for New Zealand on Friday and will remain across the Tasman for 10 days in the build-up to the inaugural Auckland Nines tournament from February 15-16.

Don at fullback with his height is a very interesting development; Michaels on the wing is meh but otherwise there will be some good indicators coming out of this game.

Don played fullback for Grafton in his jnrs. Did a pretty good job of it too. Wouldn't be my first choice backup fb, but not a terrible option.
Interesting that Taka is not mentioned for nines or this trial as of yet. Would love to know what the coaches view his 2014 role to be.
Hopefully the boys smash it and in particular, carter and like have huge games .
