Rugby League World Cup sees windfall

The 2013 Rugby League World Cup is expected to generate a profit well in excess of $A5.4 million.

Profits from the Rugby League World Cup will be pumped back into the game, the tournament's director says.

The 14th World Cup, which culminated in Australia's 34-2 win over New Zealand in Saturday's final at Old Trafford, is expected to generate a profit well in excess of STG3 million ($A5.4 million) from commercial revenue and an aggregate attendance of 457,483.

Nigel Wood, who is chief executive of the Rugby Football League, says the tournament was a resounding success and the profits will be ploughed back into the international game.

"In terms of attendance and TV audience, spectacle and profile and commercial and financial success, the tournament has met, and in most cases exceeded, all expectations," he said.

"The success provides the Rugby League International Federation with the resources to move the sport forward and we will be putting in place structures that ensure the legacy of RLWC2013 around the world is lasting and positive.

"The tournament underlined the importance and appeal of international competition."

Officials reported sell-out crowds at Huddersfield, Warrington, Rochdale, Halifax, Perpignan, Toulouse and Old Trafford, where the attendance of 74,468 for Saturday's final set a new record for international rugby league.

Fantastic to see two consective World Cups turning a healthy profit after the 2000 World Cup.

Now I just want to see how it is spent and see the RLIF set up a proper office and staff and get it where we get the most bang for our buck.
