MANLY Sea Eagles have five days to challenge a $10,000 fine to coach Geoff Toovey after being issued a breach notice for comments on the performance of the referees on Friday night.

Toovey went on the attack following Manly's 22-10 loss to South Sydney in which the Sea Eagles lost the penalty count 10-5 and had a controversial no try ruling go against Steve Matai that could have brought them back into the game.

A press release by the NRL was released on Monday stating that coaches were not permitted to question the integrity of the match officials nor make excessive or unjustified criticisms of their performances.

It stated that: "Excessive criticism is deemed as moving beyond identifying perceived errors and making an emotional attack on match officials."

“I accept that emotion is a big part of our game but that is not an excuse for making unwarranted attacks on match officials,” NRL Head of Football, Todd Greenberg, said.

“There needs to be a balance between coach’s expressing their opinions and their emotions and showing respect for the game and the match officials in that process.”

Referees boss Daniel Anderson, said: “The performance of the match officials in a fiercely contested game on Friday night was very good.

“With the Steve Matai ruling, the officials followed the proper procedures in the video review process and arrived at the correct decision.

“The referee on the field ruled the player grounded the ball short and was then held up and there was insufficient video evidence to warrant over-ruling that decision.”

This was a great spray, and while I don't necessarily agree with everything he had to say about this issue, I do agree that there needs to be more accountability for the refs poor decision making, particularly the video refs.
