Proposed elite baseball academy south of Brisbane could fast track Logan talent to the big league

A proposed elite baseball academy south of Brisbane could fast track Logan talent to the big league.

Coomera Cubs Baseball Club is gathering support for a new baseball academy which would share links with clubs from the US and Asia in an attempt to provide a stronger pathway for the region’s top players.

Club president Nick Day said while the concept was in its earliest stages, it had the potential to enhance opportunities for scholarships to major college’s and clubs.

“We want to build a situation where we can promote baseball and provide better education for the sport to the kids and ultimately increase the level of sport activity in the area,” Day said.

“The academy is designed to be able to pull in expert coaching from outside the club and provide a mechanism to give targeted and expert training.

“We are exploring out options available to bring people from the states and locally as well as bring teams from Asia for representative promotions.

“There is a pathway established already through the Australian Baseball League but it could increase the chances of players being picked up and getting scholarships to colleges as well as being drafted. It could give them the opportunity to play professionally down the track.”

Day said the academy would be similar to the one established by Redlands Baseball Club in recent years and would hopefully open the door for increased funding from the local government to develop the facilities needed to cater for the academy.

“We would love to increase our facilities and it isn’t up to scratch at the moment,” Day said.

‘It is about trying to improve things as a local club and looking for the means to grow the sport.”
