For the second straight year, Cameron Smith has been voted the best player in the NRL by Fairfax Media's stable of rugby league experts.
In a close-run race, Smith just edged out Melbourne and representative teammate Billy Slater, according to the votes from 16 league journalists from the Sydney Morning Herald, Sun-Herald, Canberra Times, Newcastle Herald, Illawarra Mercury, Canberra Times and Fairfax NZ.
South Sydney star Greg Inglis' improvement since his switch to fullback is reflected in his rise from seventh to third, with Cowboys halfback Johnathan Thurston down two places to fourth and Cooper Cronk rounding out the top five.

Rabbitohs forward Sam Burgess has risen from 11th last year to sixth, while Sonny Bill Williams' strong early-season form means he's the highest-ranked new entry at eighth on the list.
Ben Barba's recent off-field dramas have not affected his status as one of the game's budding superstars, ranking 10th despite the Dally M Medal winner missing the first three rounds of the season.
In the battle between the NSW State of Origin halfback candidates, Bunnies No.7 Adam Reynolds (18th) was a clear winner over Roosters playmaker Mitchell Pearce (30th).
Some of the big improvers from last year's poll include Tigers hooker Robbie Farah, who has risen from 21st to 10th, and Titans forwards Greg Bird (up 12 places to 17th) and Nate Myles (up 24 places to 26th).
Sacked Raiders fullback Josh Dugan has plummeted in the standings after going off the rails following Canberra's round-one loss to Penrith, sliding from 10th last year to 47th in the 2013 poll.
Several other players have dropped out of the top 50 altogether, most notably Parramatta halfback Chris Sandow (22nd last year), injury-plagued Raiders five-eighth Terry Campese (24th), Knights skipper Kurt Gidley (25th) and Dragons veteran Matt Cooper (34th).

Bad if you're a New South Welshman. Not so bad if you're a Queenslander..

    First Non-Queenslander is a Pom.

This is rubbish & a couple of obvious B#llsh#t rankings are

Barba was probably in the top 5 players in the comp last year but wasn't on the list for the same year.

Scott & Tamou have been playing rubbish this season yet they have gone up the list from last year.

Michael Jennings is ranked 4 places lower this season when he's in career best form with the Roosters & last season was playing games at Windsor

    Where is George Burgess ?

Inglis is better than Slater. They have to except the facts not just give Slater a pedestal to everyone else. Why is Benji number 9 i have no clue.

Pearce ahead of Shaun Johnson. Uhh
