Wests Tigers relegate Benji to NRL bench
    By By Russell Jackson
    AAP
    Tue 14th May, 7:11pm

Superstar Benji Marshall has been dumped to the bench by Wests Tigers coach Mick Potter in a selection shock ahead of the joint venture's NRL clash with competition leaders South Sydney on Friday.

Back-rower Liam Fulton will start at five-eighth with Curtis Sironen shifting from No.6 to halfback for the match at ANZ Stadium.

Marshall recently admitted he was in poor form for the battling Tigers who have lost six consecutive matches to sit last on the ladder.

Tigers have too many injuries to keep up with any team in the comp atm. I do feel sorry for them.

    Souths killing it!

I tell you the Souths fans and Burrow are fantastic and great advertisements and enticements to attend. If only they were at a bigger stadium. Maybe one day they will return to SFS and sell it out. And they can give some thanks to the Burrow.

Greg Inglis scores four tries as South Sydney Rabbitohs destroy Wests Tigers

WESTS Tigers coach Mick Potter has appealed for frustrated fans not to give up on his team after they crashed to a humiliating 54-10 defeat to South Sydney.

In what will go down as one of the worst performances in the joint-venture club's history, Souths raced in 10 tries to two with superstar Greg Inglis crossing for four tries on a wonderful night for the competition leaders, who have now won four on the trot.

For the Tigers, the loss out-stripped their previous worst defeat to South Sydney - a 50-10 defeat at the SCG back in 2010. The Wests Tigers' biggest-ever defeat was a 64-0 hiding by the Storm in 2001.

Potter conceded after the game Benji Marshall would more than likely be back in the starting team for Friday night's showdown with North Queensland at Leichhardt

Asked if last night was rock bottom after seven straight defeats, Potter said: "Well, we have a tough game against North Queensland.

"I'm glad it is at Leichhardt and I really hope we get some fans there to try and lift us up because when you are on the back of seven straight losses it is a tough place. We need some support and we need those people to get to Leichhardt."

Potter took over at the Tigers this year after the club dumped Tim Sheens to head in a new direction.

Sheens was at the game last night and would have been entitled to wonder if the direction the club is now heading is any better than where he was taking them previously.

It was a defensive performance that can only be labelled disgraceful, with simple one-on-one misses from many of the Tigers' most experienced players the most disappointing aspect of the overall performance.

Asked if he could remember a tougher time at the club, skipper Robbie Farah said: "Oh, it's tough.

"I don't want to compare or look back but mentally it has been tough too. It is starting to affect me and if it is starting to affect me then it is going to be affecting the young kids, too.

"They have come into first grade and they have been hit with this."

He said no doubt pressure will mount on everyone at the club.

"It's only going to be a matter of time before the rumours start," Farah added. "We just have to stick together and work our butts off to get out of it. There is no other way."

There is no question the Tigers are suffering because of a crippling injury toll but the biggest problem last night was the the distinct lack of effort.

Players such as Aaron Woods and Adam Blair - top class forwards - defended like revolving doors through the middle with the Tigers overall missing 37 tackles and the majority came in the first half with Souths leading 38-4 at the break.

"We are down on confidence, there is no doubt about that," Farah said. "You conceded a try or two early, especially with the young kids we've got, and it was snowball effect and everyone dropped their heads and we let in some tries and some one-on-one misses that were just not good enough."

The whole reason Potter started Marshall off the bench was to try to stiffen up the left edge defence through Liam Fulton.

Fulton topped the tackle count with 37 tackles but in fairness to Marshall the game was gone at 16-0 when he got on in the 17th minute.

For Souths, where do you start with the accolades.

Greg Inglis was again close to unstoppable last night while John Sutton, Nathan Merritt, Issac Luke and Adam Reynolds all had wonderful games.
