Show your colours: Businesses urged to get into spirit of NRL match

Mid-Western Regional Council is encouraging local businesses to capitalise on Mudgee hosting its first National Rugby League premiership match later this month.

In the same way Mudgee celebrated hosting Country v City in 2012, Council is hoping local retail outlets will show their support by dressing up shopfronts leading up to the Parramatta Eels v Gold Coast Titans clash at Glen Willow Regional Sports Stadium on May 26.

Mid-Western Regional Council’s corporate communications officer, Pip Goldsmith, said it would be great to see local businesses getting behind the major event.

“This is a big deal for our region and we’re really glad to be working with local businesses to support an event, encourage visitors to our town, and in turn, support those local businesses,” Ms Goldsmith said.

“Council recognises the positive impact that major events have on our local economy, and we want to work with local businesses to make sure they can capitalise on this opportunity as much as possible.”

Council has provided local businesses with shop dress-up packs including balloons, streamers and custom designed posters. More packs are available from Council for those businesses who would like to be involved.

Sportspower Mudgee is one business who will be dressing their shopfront in the coming weeks. Although employee Blake Joseph is a mad Wests Tigers fan, he said it was still great to see an NRL game come to Mudgee and he will be getting into the spirit.

Ms Goldsmith said it did not have to be only Mudgee businesses getting on board.

“This is an event which will deliver benefits across our whole region, and Council is encouraging locals to take this opportunity to showcase all our towns and villages,” she said.

Council will be promoting attractions across the region so visitors who come for the NRL game will also see what is on offer.

“It’s not just businesses in Mudgee who can show their support for the game. Businesses in Gulgong,

Rylstone and Kandos should also let us know if they’d like to dress up their shop, and we’ll send them decorations too,” Ms Goldsmith continued.

The best presented and most creatively decorated shopfront will win a family pass to the full day of football at Glen Willow on May 26.

Council will also be running competitions on its Facebook page for the best dressed fan and best fan banner.
