Glenn Stewart has knee surgery and faces 10 weeks on sideline; Panther out for six:

GLENN Stewart will miss the first month of the NRL season and could be on the sidelines for up to 10 weeks after having off-season surgery for the second time.

Stewart had surgery to clean out floating cartilage in his left knee on Thursday and will see a specialist again this week in a post-operation check-up.

There is no structural damage or issue with ligaments in the 29-year-old NSW State of Origin lock's knee.

It comes as Penrith general manager Phil Gould this morning revealed promising speedster James Roberts, who was a standout in Penrith's trial win over the Tigers on Friday night, had injured his ankle and would be out for six weeks.

Stewart's rehabilitation program has been designed for a 10-week turnaround which would allow him to return for the Sea Eagles' round seven clash with the Rabbitohs at Brookvale Oval on April 26.

Stewart had the same minor cleanout surgery at the end of the 2012 season.

It is a major headache for Sea Eagles coach Geoff Toovey with the Sea Eagles suddenly short on backrowers following the departure of Tony Williams to the Bulldogs.

Meanwhile Roberts has been placed in a medical "moon boot" and will today see a surgical specialist to have X-rays and decide if his injured ankle requires surgery.

If no surgery is required he will make his debut for the Panthers in round three against the Rabbitohs at Centrebet Stadium.

    Thurston cleared of hand injury

North Queensland co-captain Johnathan Thurston has been cleared of a hand injury which threatened his start to the NRL season.

The Queensland and and Australian five-eighth underwent precautionary x-rays and scans on Monday after hurting his right hand in Saturday night's NRL All Stars game.

Thurston's hand was still sore on Monday, but the club confirmed there was no structural damage.

He is now safe to travel to Cairns on Thursday for the club's NRL pre-season trial against St George Illawarra at Barlow Park on Saturday night.

Fellow co-captain Matthew Scott, Gavin Cooper, Dallas Johnson, Glenn Hall, Ashton Sims and Antonio Winterstein are expected to make their first appearance for the year in the trial.

Meanwhile, the Cowboys believe their latest re-signing Kane Linnett can break into representative football this season.

The 24-year-old centre, who played 24 of the club's 26 games in 2012, extended his contract until 2016 on Monday, much to the delight of coach Neil Henry and club football manager Peter Parr.

Linnett carried off the club's Most Improved award last season following a breakout year which included 12 tries to the former Rooster.

"We couldn't have been any happier with how Kane performed in his first season with the Cowboys," Parr said on Monday.

"He settled in straight away, had an excellent season in both attack and defence and we think there's still more development there in his game.

"He should come into contention for representative football in the near-future and it's a big positive for our club that he's committed long-term to the Cowboys."

Linnett, who is three games shy of 50 NRL games, said he enjoyed the North Queensland lifestyle.

"Both the area and the club suit me. I already have some great mates here and you can tell we have a team capable of winning a premiership," he said.

Default More NRL injury pain for Matt King

More NRL injury pain for Matt King

    RSS
    AAP Mon, Mar 25, 2013 - 2:19 PM

The career of South Sydney's former Test and NSW rugby league winger Matt King is again hanging in the balance after he broke his arm for a second time during his comeback game.

It's a cruel blow for King who admitted last month he'd been close to quitting the game.

King initially broke his arm when tackling Melbourne winger Sisa Waqa during last year's finals series and he then contracted Osteomyelitis - an infection of the bone - and was told he could be out for up to 18 months.

However, a course of strong antibiotics put the 32-year-old back in training sooner than expected and he made his return to action for the Rabbitohs' feeder club North Sydney Bears against Newtown in the NSW Cup on Saturday.

But he failed to see out the game after breaking the arm again and he now faces another four months on the sidelines recuperating.

King revealed in February that he'd been ready to pull the pin on his long first-grade career which began with Melbourne in 2003 before he switched to English Super League side Warrington.

Souths coach Michael Maguire said he hoped to have King back in his side before the end of the season and he still had a role to play at the club.

"It's a tough situation for Kingy as he has worked extremely hard to put himself into a position to make his return last weekend," Maguire said.

"Kingy is the ultimate professional and we know that he will do everything he can, in conjunction with our medical team, to return from this injury before the end of the season.

"He's still a massive part of what were doing here. He's a leader in the development of the group and the players have a huge amount of respect for what he does for this team."

Injured Inglis set to miss six NRL weeks
    By Ian McCullough
    AAP
    Thu 18th July, 7:10am

South Sydney's NRL premiership hopes have been handed a huge blow with superstar fullback Greg Inglis set to miss six to eight weeks of NRL action after damaging a posterior cruciate ligament.

Inglis sustained the knee injury in the first half of Queensland's State of Origin series-clinching 12-10 victory over NSW on Wednesday night.

He played the whole of the second half with the problem as the Maroons held off a dominant Blues side who failed to turn possession into points at ANZ Stadium.

Queensland doctor Roy Saunders examined Inglis after the game and confirmed the injury, although he will undergo scans on Friday to determine the full extent of the damage.

Inglis will miss South Sydney's clash with St George Illawarra on Monday and the ladder leaders could be without the 26-year-old until the start of the NRL finals campaign.
