    Default NRL Expansion

Potenital new NRL team Western Australia Reds win the endorsement of existing clubs to join competition

Expansion plans ... WA Reds could be competing for the NRL trophy by 2013.
WA Reds have received a unanimous endorsement from the 16 NRL clubs to join the competition in 2013.

The non-binding vote of confidence at a recent NRL conference in Byron Bay offers a massive injection of confidence as the West Australian Rugby League plans to present its bid in March or April.

WARL chief executive John Sackson says a new WA team, which would play out of nib Stadium, would have the corporate and crowd support to succeed long term, unlike the Western Reds franchise that operated at the WACA from 1995-97.

The NRL is likely to expand the competition to 18 teams in 2013 with Perth a leading contender, along with Rockhampton in Central Queensland, Logan or Ipswich south of Brisbane, and Gosford on the NSW Central Coast.

The WARL believes three key selling points, the $82.5 million State Government-backed redevelopment of the eastern grandstand at nib Stadium, WA's booming economy and the WA TV time zone, will be key to the success of the bid.

"David Gallop (the NRL CEO) has already given the stadium a big tick, the players like coming here, the coaches like coming here," WARL chief executive John Sackson said.

"We have a booming economy and the infrastructure that comes with a capital city such as Perth with its strong corporate support.

"We have a proud rugby league heritage. Look at the Western Reds, who played at the WACA which was not an ideal ground by any means to watch rugby league and they attracted average crowds of 16,500 per game.

"Perth is tailor made for games being televised back into the eastern states because of our time zone.

"To have the support of clubs, the CEOs and the chairmen of the existing clubs, for them to vote unanimously for Perth as a destination for expansion is a very positive statement."

The WARL would need at least 18 months to build a team but is well on the way to building a $15 million annual budget to run an NRL franchise.

"Our plan is to present to the NRL's new independent commission in March-April next year so in the meantime we will be proactive and build a sustainable, robust, irresistible business plan that hopefully gets us over the line."

Meanwhile, David Hobbs has been elected chairman of the WARL board.

Hobbs, CEO of the Professionals Group WA & NT, is no stranger to setting up clubs.

He was with the Fremantle Dockers from inception, helping to set up its marketing and sponsorship arm. Hobbs replaces Terry Creasey who stepped down because of business commitments.

No mate, the WA Reds as of right now are not accepted into the NRL yet. But it looks like they will be in 2013. the decision on expansion will come mid-year 2011.

This is great news for the WA Reds, as they will also need a lot of the attention of the NRL when starting up this is also great news for the Central Coast Bears because the NRL will need to accept another bid that needs little to help by the NRL in setting up. The only bid capable of that is the Central Coast Bears.

How is the CQ Bears proposal gonna make any more money than the current NSW clubs, let alone another QLD club?

Central Queer Bears, or maybe just a typo
Regardless, still just another NSW team that the ARLC will have to prop up.
I'd like to know what makes you think they are the "only bid capable"? - Want to elaborate?

John Singleton has nothing to do with the Central Coast Bears current NRL Bid.

I didn't say they were the only capable bid. I said with the high likelihood of the WA Reds getting a team the NRL would have to look towards another bid that could sustain themselves with little to no input by the NRL.

CQ - Good bid but about a year and half behind the Bears, they could possibly be ready to sustain themselves without NRL assistance in 2015/16. But if they were put in in 2013 they would need considerable NRL time that the NRL needs to be giving the WA Team.

Ipswich - Still in the infant stage and are still working out their business model. They would need just as much help from the NRL as the WA Reds. Something the NRL can just simply not afford.

Central Coast Bears - They most advance NRL bid of history, the most advance sport bid in recent Australian history (at least). They are also the only Bid to every be put on stand-by twice (once in 2009 and once in 2010).

If that does not convince you, here is what the Bears have that not other NRL bid has:

    Community

The Central Coast Bears bid to gain admission to the NRL in 2013 is centred on the clubs Vision statement, which simply states the aim of the clubs is to:

    - Establish a world class rugby league franchise at Gosford on the NSW Central Coast.

    - Provide the Central Coast community, and its legion of rugby league supporters, with a football team of its very own.

    - Give aspiring Central Coast rugby league players the chance to play at the highest level without having to leave home, and

    - Rekindle interest in the game of rugby league on Sydney's North Shore and Northern Districts, by bringing back the bears, and in doing so, giving them an NRL team to support once again.

    The Central Coast Bears community
The Central Coast Bears community stretches from Milsons Point, all the way through to the top of Lake Munmorah, with a population of over One Million people. Below are links to the junior clubs and associations within this rugby league loving heartland.

Central Coast Rugby League Legends to join forces with local High Schools in youth mentoring program.

Rugby League legends and Central Coast Bears executives, Greg Florimo and David Fairleigh have joined forces with the Insight Organisation to mentor students of Narara Valley High School on the Central Coast.

The pilot scheme will see sporting and leadership programs run at the High School on a weekly basis with plans to see the program expand to all Central Coast and North Shore high schools in the near future. The Jumpstart program aims to lift the spirit and self esteem of high school students, assisting them to identify their strengths and set achievable short and mid term goals.

"It is important for our organisation to be in touch with the youth, and to understand the issues and problems they are faced with. These programs will ensure the Central Coast Bears remain aware of the impact rugby league has on the community, and will give us an opportunity to truly connect with the fans," said Central Coast Bears CEO Greg Florimo.

Phill Pallas, Senior Youth Worker of the Insight organisation is full of praise for the new program, "It's a huge privilege to be partnering with the Central Coast Bears. When they walk into the classroom, student's faces light up. Through the Jumpstart program we are having success with young people that we just haven't had before."

Principal of Narara Valley High School, Andrew Eastcott values the contribution of the Central Coast Bears, "The beauty of this program is that the students feel a connection with the Bears and that link also fits in well with our new targeted sports program."

The Central Coast Bears plan to have their entire playing roster and staff undertake similar programs within the schools, with a view to building a club culture focused on giving back to the community.

The Central Coast Bears are also helping out and associated with Bear Cottage, Central Coast Academy of Sport & Lutanda Camp Toukley

    Memberships

With weekly membership drives on the central coast & north shore (sometimes up to 4 drives a week), the Central Coast Bears aim at having 5000 financial members by the time the bid is submitted in March. Currently the Central Coast Bears have 4704 financial members.

Yes it will be a bear. A major contributing factor in the Central Coast obtaining an NRL licence is having a sustainable business plan. It's vital we leverage the history of any existing branding that a bear brings to rugby league. By using a bear we open up revenue streams from all over Australia.

Will all our home games be played at Gosford?

All of our home games will be played at Bluetongue Stadium except for one. We will endeavour to play the Heritage round at North Sydney Oval along with possibly one trial game.

Will you be involved with local charities?

The club will be involved in numerous charitable organisations and will have beneficiaries all over the region. It's important for us that we are able to use our profile to provide many forms of assistance to those in need.

How can the community be involved with the bid?

There will be a community relations department dedicated to providing interactive programmes. The public will also have an opportunity to design our home and away jerseys as well as design a logo and write our club song.

    Is expansion on the agenda?

Expansion is on the agenda however there are contributing factors that will influence the time frame of expansion such as the re-negotiation of the broadcasting rights. The NRL have acknowledged that the Central Coast would be an ideal location for a new franchice.

When will you be in the competition?

Our aim is to be fully operational by the middle of 2012 for a 2013 kickoff, however should the situation arise for an earlier inclusion date we would be fully operational and ready to do so.

Where will the players come from?

Our recruitment will cover players from all over Australia, New Zealand and the Pacific Islands. However it's essential we establish structures in the Central coast junior league that will provide everyone the chance to play for a local NRL team now and in the future.

What do I get by becoming a member?

They have 4702 financial members (currently more then 7 NRL clubs including Manly). They have sold over 1000 Bears jersey priced at $120 with all profits going back to the Bears.

They have the backing from both sides of Government from NSW state government and have backing from The current Federal Government. They have a stadium ready today and able to be upgraded.

How much do you know about their 'sustainability', their business model, their financial backing or even the demographics of the region? The region is the heart of Australias economy without a national sporting team within 600kms of any direction.

I don't know the ins and outs of this bid, and they may be in its infancy - but geographically they already have it all over the CC Bears bid. The CC Bears claimed territory is barely covering more than what North Sydney and Newcastle already cover. Ipswich would be taking a share of a multi-million population market that proves time and time again that they fork out their hard-earned to support RL.

That is laughable! Don't forget you are posting on the official forum of the Gold Coast Titans - The most recent sport bid to be accepted which boasted a brand new state of the art $160M stadium and a $30M center of excellence that no other sporting club in the country has. Ever realised why the CC Bears is still just a bid being put on stand-by, and not a functioning NRL club yet? It's because the bid has never been good enough.

Maybe you should actually look into the developments of the other bids before stating your assumptions as fact. You'll need more than a 'copy & paste' off the CC Bears website to convince me that they are the 'only capable bid.'

I admire your passion for your yet-to-be club, but if you keep looking at the bid proposals with one eye, you are gonna be disappointed when the new addmission are announced. Again.

As much as I would love to see the Bears back. As a foundation NSWRL club. And admire their sponsorship and Membership support.

Is it really fair to add more NSW teams? When Queensland only has three. And while I'm sorry to see a Foundation club fall. What about the Queensland Foundation and heritage clubs such as Valleys, Brothers and Wests.

I want expansion. And I want the Reds in. Not sure about the second place. Surely a new QLD would be best for Rugby League, but I wouldn't begrudge Norths a place.

But one key advantage to the Reds is the suppport from other clubs. While the Bears do face opposition from neighbouring clubs worries about the effect of the Bears on them. That should give the Reds the inside rail in the race for a spot.

If you or anybody else things CQ or Ipswich can start running a club by june/july 2011 that will ready for the 2013 season without NRL assistance then you are dreaming.

WA's booming economy is the heart of Australia's economy. I hate to break this to you but there is more to Australia then just QLD.

The North Shore of Sydney (apart from the peninsula) and the Central Coast is not covered by any NRL team. Efforts by Manly to expand into the North Shore has resulted in failed attempts every time. The most recent attempt was when they spend the 2 weeks school holidays in Hornsby looking to sign up members. After two weeks they signed up zero members. The Central Coast region has repeatedly knocked back half baked attempts by the Newcastle Knights to come into that territory. Why? because the Knights are not active in the Central Coast community. The Bears are and that is why 3/4 of the Central Coast Bears financial membership comes from the Central Coast. Something the NRL wanted to see as the Bears move towards 5,000 members by March, another thing the NRL wanted to see.

That is opinion and is a baseless comment.

The Titans bid was too deemed not good enough before they went back and made a re-attempt at the bid which the NRL aided in. Or have you forgotten that vital piece of information because it doesn't fit in with your ideals?

I GC Titans are still receiving help from the NRL to this day. It is not a bad things it is just fact.

I have been following Rugby League expansion over three years where i have become familar with all current NRL bids.

Show how much you know, that was taken from all the facts from all the post i have made on the Bears over the past three years on a variety of different social website. But since you managed to bring up the Central Coast Bears official website at least that itself is proof of their continued work in there community. Other Bids website including the WA Reds have not and do not have professional website to keep people up to date with those bids. It is up to activist like myself to find out for ourselves.

Like i have already stated i am across all Bids and most people who are, are of the opinion that the earliest the two QLD bids can make the NRL is 2015. This is from business-Rugby League people this comment.

The only way the Central Coast Bears bid will be knocked back is if expansion itself is held back. That would give time to both QLD bids to bring their bids up level with the Bears and then the Queensland geographical locations will win over.

But there is a reason why Gallop was talking about the CQ in terms of "decades" and the Ipswich bid, who hasn't even meet with him yet, as a 'future prospect'.

Ignore it at your will but having a Queensland-centric view on it won't help either QLD Rugby League Bids, Which i am as much as a fan of as the Bears and Reds. i just know what will work well for the game of Rugby league in the Current sporting market.

BTW, i was a Gold Coast NRL bid supporter long before they became known as the Gold Coast Titans. I saw how vital the GC was to the competition. The CC Bears have matched that level.

Usually i would be against having another Sydney team but it does bring in a 3rd regional NSW regional team and a fourth overall regional team. Their area also covers almost 20% of the entire population of NSW. That 20% is enough for AFL to comfortably support the two teams. GWS have already moved their focus on juniors to the North Shore and Central Coast after finding out there is not enough AFL Juniors in the area that the AFL has deemed "Greater Western Sydney".

No Bears = AFL foothold of two teams.

This time around is so different then 04/05 expansion bid in so many ways.. this time around it is a community based team, last time that was lacking and the Bears have learnt from their mistakes.we are following Gold Coast bid to a tee, plus The Bears have the financial members which the Gold Coast didn't have back then.
