Dave Taylor is already pulling his weight

HULKING forward Dave Taylor has started the pre-season at his South Sydney playing weight, determined to make his mark with the Titans.

Taylor's weight has often been a bone of contention but he has not put on a kilo since leaving the Rabbitohs for his new home.

Distance runs and the dreaded beep test were the flavour of the day at Robina yesterday and while Taylor was not among the hares leading the charge, he was hardly disgraced despite being at the back of the pack.

"I finished the year at the same weight I'm at now," Taylor said.

"Hopefully I'll lose a bit more over the off-season and come back lighter."

Taylor's enthusiasm to start work pleased coach John Cartwright, who noted his newest recruit's condition.

"He's a big guy, so it's good to see that he hasn't wasted his summer break," Cartwright said.

"He's obviously gone away and done some conditioning and he's turned up today in pretty good shape."

Taylor knows he will have to be at his best to claim a place in a Titans pack rated one of the best in the competition.

"There's some good players there," he said.

"But that's what makes a good competition, people biting at your toes.

"That's what we had at South Sydney and that's what we've got here -- there's a great bunch of blokes here and there's every opportunity for any player in the team to cement their spot, so you've got to make sure that you're on your toes and training at 100 per cent."

The 24-year-old lost his Maroons jersey after being axed for the final Origin game last season and hopes playing at the level of the Titans pack can help him regain his representative spot.

"I am (looking forward to it). You've got Nate (Myles), you've got Ash (Harrison) just to name a couple.

"They've been there and done it all and it's just a great opportunity for me to learn as much as I can off them."

The article above that was in the Bulletin was better than the comments on the back page that stated Taylor was "uninspiring" and "battled" his way through the first training session. I don't know what game the Bulletin are playing at the moment but they are writing a lot of crap about theTitans. Criticism is fine but to bag a bloke after one training session is just rubbish.

This is an issue for David May to resolve.

Yup, it's gotten to the point that I won't even bother reading articles that the The Bulletin release now. It's a shame, because one could depend on them printing something that resembles the truth, time 'n time again. Nowadays it's just utter crap..

EDIT: I've been wondering lately if that Travis Meyn is in fact insideword. Seems that they both have about the same disdain for our club as each other

Bigger, stronger and faster is Titans goal for 2013

The iSelect Gold Coast Titans have used science and technology to take pre-season training to another level at Titans headquarters today. Under the guidance of new strength and conditioning coach Dan Ferris the team began the first of many regular training sessions in the club’s altitude chamber. Altitude training involves exercising in oxygen-reduced air for the purpose of improved athletic performance.

Ferris said, “When we’re at sea level the oxygen in the air is at 21%, so what we do is extract oxygen out of the chamber which makes the exercise harder by about 20 – 30%.

“What we can do is push our boys a lot harder to increase the amount of oxygen flow through their body, so we instantly increase their fitness over a period of time.”

The Titans were one of the first in Australia to have utilised an onsite altitude chamber.

“To have it inside our training facility when we can use it all the time is a great positive step. “We use it for our rehab players too, because they can’t go on the field all the time we want to make sure that they still stay in shape so when they do return to play they’re as close to match fit as possible.”

Ferris has stepped up to the top role of strength and conditioning coach from his assistant coach position last year and has worked closely with head coach John Cartwright and the coaching staff in the off-season to see where improvements can be made.

“We were only two wins out of the top eight going last season, so we’re looking to improve in a number of small areas,” said Ferris.

Those areas include the way the strength and conditioning program is implemented through new facilities and techniques.

“We’ve revamped our gym, got a new strength training program and on the field we’re going to do a little longer distance just to make sure we can compete with the other teams.”

The Titans will also be focusing on the players’ nutrition program with education being emphasized by dietician Kel Hogan.

“It’s more about education from our point of view, a lot of the guys live at home by themselves and they might not know what to cook, or what’s right and what's not,” Ferris said.

“Kel’s there to make sure they eat the right thing but to also educate them so they can make their own decisions, she’ll be a big bonus for us.”

“We just want to improve on everything, we want to make them bigger, stronger and faster in every area.”

instantly increase the fitness over a period of time...nicely said.

besides that, i like that we are taking new measures, new approaches and have nutritionists on board. its very encouraging, the only thing bothering me in the last few reports is the mention that we were only 2 wins outside the 8...i hope we dont start the year thinking we are almost there...

I don't get that...how do you increase the amount of oxygen flow through the body by extracting oxygen from the air?

You'd think the body would be working harder because of the lack of oxygen!
