Haizyn Mellars could have scored a second try just minutes later when good work from Jeremaiah Tamepo saw Haizyn Mellars set to race away down the left touchline but unfortunately he could not reign the ball in.

It was not just in an attacking sense that Haizyn Mellars was good in the air as was evidenced in the 22nd minute when he leapt high in his in-goal in defuse a bomb under pressure and then Haizyn Mellars wasted no time in racing the ball back to the twenty metre mark for the restart and was able to make eight metres as a result.

Haizyn Mellars took the ball on the full once again from a defensive perspective again in the 42nd minute, on that occasion however just out from his own line and then Haizyn Mellars fought his way eighteen metres downfield to get in the ball to near the hallway and was subsequently awarded a penalty when he was not afforded the opportunity to get to his feet quickly.

Haizyn Mellars was also strong defensively in the match including in the 18th minute when he came off his left wing to hit the Currumbin right centre just ten metres out when he was facing a two man overlap. Impressively Haizyn Mellars then raced back from marker to help hold up the Currumbin right second rower over the line.

Haizyn Mellars started all seven of the Seagulls matches, including their 40 – 18 semi-final loss to Queensland Champions, the Tweed Heads Seagulls.

Easing the hurt of the loss a touch was the fact that Haizyn Mellars scored the opening try of the match, in the 7th minute when he was on the end of a Wynnum Manly backline movement that saw him dive over in the left corner.

In total from his seven 2021 MM Cup matches, Haizyn Mellars scored on six occasions to finish with a strike rate of 85.71%. In addition to his semi-final try, Haizyn Mellars scored a double in Round Two against the Redcliffe Dolphins and also scored against Redcliffe in Round Five.

The talented Jackson Le Pou youngster moved over from the Upper Central Zone of New Zealand’s North Island for the 2021 season and started at five eight for the Currumbin Eagles in their GCRL U18 Division One Round One match against the Southport Tigers.

Even though he started the match at five eight, Jackson Le Pou played in the dummy half role for the Eagles in their 28 – 10 first up victory.

Jackson Le Pou could not have gotten an earlier touch when he took the kick-off to start the match on the full above his head AFL style.

Jackson Le Pou also started at five eight in Round Two against the Nerang Roosters as well as in Round Three against the Helensvale Hornets.

Against the Hornets in Round Three Jackson Le Pou scored his first regular season try since his arrival from New Zealand when he ran to his right dummying both inside and out before slicing through the line and then Jackson Le Pou stepped off his right foot to beat the Helensvale fullback and get the ball down five metres from the right upright.

Round Four saw Jackson Le Pou continue at five eight agaisnt Mudgeeraba with his left goot kicking game taking precedence inlduing a 16th minute kick into the right corner which had to be knocked dead by the Redbacks fullback.

After missing a number of weeks, Jackson Le Pou was named to return on the bench in the previously postponed Round Eight match against the Southport Tigers and also was named to start on the bench in Round Twelve against the Ormeau Shearers.

Round Thirteen against Runaway Bay saw Jackson Le Pou move in the Currumbin starting side at hooker.

Jackson Le Pou had a very solid pre-season with the Eagles including a great Pre-season Round One match against Ormeau scoring in the 55th minutes as well as recording a 7th minute try assist.

Jackson Le Pou’s 55th minute try was a strong individual effort when he received the ball ten metres out from the line and ran to his right. As he approached the defensive line Jackson Le Pou stepped off his right foot to beat one defender before a second right foot step to get around the Ormeau fullback and get the ball down in a tackle five metres to the right of the uprights.

Jackson Le Pou’s try assist came in just the 7th minute of the match when he took the ball down the right side of the field, taking the ball to the line before throwing a great cut-out pass to put his right centre into a huge gap thirty metres out and from there the centre was able to dive over in the right corner untouched.

Quinton Dalton continued at halfback in Round Five against Runaway Bay and made his presence felt in just the 5th minute when he made a darting run through centre field after he trailed one of his forwards and was ideally placed to receive the off-load.

The Titans catchment area has expanded quite significantly over the last couple of seasons from just the Gold Coast and just over the border into a significant expanse of territory from Logan and Ipswich all of the way down to south of Grafton.

The initial step is the Titans four JTS squads in Group One, Group 18, the Gold Coast and Logan. Obviously the relationships that Jamie McCormack has developed with Ballina HS, PBC, Keebra Park and Marsden SHS's are one of the key drivers, with players from outside those regions moving to our catchment area.

The big movement in the qualitative explosion in the JTS Program was Jamie McCormack's contacts and subsequently Ezra Howe getting involved with Ezra having great contacts in NZ, thus the quality of NZ boys moving to the Coast, normally to move in with family and attend one of the Titans partnered schools.

Impressively the Titans are really locking up Logan and to a lesser extent Ipswich with one of the reasons that the Titans actually play development squad matches where most of the other NRL clubs just train.

Also the formal links to the Northern Rivers Titans has enabled boys from over the border in NSW to paly under the Titans banner in a high level competition before graduating to the Tweed or Burleigh MM squads.

Whereas five or six years ago the Bronco's development staff were mobbed when they were watching junior matches now the Titans staff are the ones that the Managers are targeting first.

Getting the right players is also key and by right I am not meaning just good players but leaders, for example William Semu who is contracted from Brisbane is a leader and mentor and others follow.

The other key reason is the respect that the Titans show the parents and boys/girls in the JTS program. For example during Covid most NRL clubs literally just said that they would get back to their players in a few month, Jamie McCormack however ran weekly video sessions with each JTS Program participant takign each boy through nor just their matches but of NRL players who are similiar from a playing style perspective and thus the juniors buy into the program because of the respect they are shown.

Having Kane Elgey is a great help too as he is mobbed whenever he attends a school, plus the of Anthony Don, David Fifita and Tananh Boyd attends programs regularly.

What does this all mean, it means that the Titans have not just developed great players but exceptional young boys and girls that are role models for the next generation of juniors. Just look at the fact that Tom Weaver, Jack Cullen and Oskar Bryant gave up their time on the weekend to attend their junior clubs presentations being Cudgen and Ryan Foran coached juniors are his junior club.

Want to guess where the boys who are involved with those situations will sign next - Yep the Titans.
