Giant front rower Zachairiah Siulepa started from the bench for Burleigh yesterday in Round Five of the GCRL U18 Division One competition against the Runaway Bay Seagulls and had a big hand in Burleigh’s 25 – 24 victory by scoring a try in each half of the nail biting victory.

After coming off the bench in the 21st minute Zachairiah Siulepa only had to wait two minutes to cross the line for his first try of not just the match but since his arrival from Perth. Zachairiah Siulepa rumbled onto the ball from twelve metres from the line, running straight and hard breaking through three tackles to get the ball down five metres from the right uprights.

Zachairiah Siulepa scored his second try in the dying minutes of the match when he received an inside pass and rumbled eight metres to score next to the right upright.

Yesterday’s Round Five of the GCRL U18 Division One competition saw Esmonde Parangi start at five eight for Runaway Bay against Burleigh in their tough one point loss.

In addition to kicking a conversion, Esmonde Parangi also recorded a try assist and a great 40/20 in the first half.

Esmonde Parangi’s try assist arrived in the 12th minute when on the last tackle he put in a right foot stab kick from thirteen metres out into the in-goal. The Burleigh defenders made a mess of trying to defuse the kick and Seagulls winger Cody Brose took advantage of the confusion to dive on the ball.

Esmonde Parangi produced another outstanding right foot stab kick in the 46th minute, on that occasion from five metres out with Burleigh forced to take the ball dead and restart by way of a goal line drop out.

Esmonde Parangi kicked his outstanding 40/20 in the 15th minute when from an acute angle down a short right blindside just inside his own forty, Esmonde Parangi was able to find touch fourteen metres out from the line.

Esmonde Parangi showed quick hands in the 6th minute when under pressure he was able to shift to his right to create space for himself and off-load to put Titan Vaikai inside space.

On Saturday Jay Blazek was outstanding for Helensvale in Round Five of the GCRL U18 Division One competition starting at lock against the Mudgeeraba Redbacks contributing a try to the Hornets 50 – 10 victory with his try coming in the 14th minute. After Helensvale were awarded a penalty twenty metres from the line, Jay Blazek took the tap restart quickly with the Redbacks defensive line still retreating.

To get past the initial defenders, Jay Blazek stepped off his right foot and then almost immediately off his left but just before the line he was tripped off in a desperate tackle but has not held and got to his feet in an instant to get over the line adjacent to the left upright.

Jay Blazek’s third and final try assist of the match came in the 36th minute when after breaking through the line himself he drew the fullback, passing to his left to put halfback Koen Stambera after to score under the posts.

Jay Blazek has heavily involved in another Helensvale try in the 51st minute when after picking up a Mudgeeraba lost ball seventy metres from the line, ran to his right and was seemingly tackled but the referee deemed that he was not held and Jay Blazek was on his feet quickly to continue to run before cutting back towards centre field and off-loading to Zac Johnson to set up a try further downfield.

Yesterday saw one of my favourite players to watch in Reshawn Anderson start from the bench for Bilambil in Round Six of the NRRRL U18 competition against Casino RSM from the bench coming into the match in just the 10th minute and scored once again in the Jets 40 – 16 victory with his try coming in the 57th minute when after receiving the ball from a standing start he was able to break through four tackles to get the ball down.

Reshawn Anderson also went close to scoring in the 21st minute when from twenty metres out he rumbled forward seventeen metres before being brought down, breaking four tackles along the way.

Reshawn Anderson is an outstanding ball runner but he is also a good defender and the Casino RSM fullback found that out the hard way when in the 24th minute he was monstered by Reshawn Anderson ten metres from the try line.

Titans contracted Michael Roberts produced another outstanding performance in Round Six of the NRRRL U18 competition against Casino RSM yesterday with the mercurial fullback scoring two tries, recording two try assists and also kicking four conversions.

Michael Roberts scored the first of his two tries in the 18th minute when he ran out of dummy half to his right, shrugging off one defender who had tried to tackle Michael Roberts around his chest. Michael Roberts then got low to dive over to score, and then he stepped up to convert his own try.

Michael Roberts added his second try right on halftime. When time in the first half almost expired and Bilambil having a scrum feed twenty metres out, the Jets put on a set play when after winning the scrum the Jets five eight who was stationed on the left of the scrum put in a short kick for Michael Roberts to chase. Michael Roberts flew through to get to the ball ten metres out but the ball just would not sit up for him so Michael Roberts toed to through again into the in-goal where it did sit up for him to retrieve and get the ball down.

Michael Roberts first try assist in the match came in the 32nd minute when he ran into the line before throwing a pass to his left to put Kelvin Bulluss over in the left corner. Michael Roberts then stepped to kick the conversion from right on the left touchline.

Michael Roberts added his second try assist in the 53rd minute when after packing into a scrum at lock he picked up the ball and ran down a left blindside to put his left centre over to score.

Michael Roberts showed that he has substance to his game as well as flash when in the 5th minute he tracked back a Casino RSM kick, retrieving it in his own in-goal with chasers streaming through. Michael Roberts wrong footed the chasers and made twenty metres down the left touchline before being tackled.

Post the 2021 MM Cup competition, Ryan Foran made his first appearance for Murwillumbah on Saturday afternoon in Round Six of the NRRRL U18 competition when he started at left second row as the Mustangs took on the Kyogle Turkeys.

To say that Ryan Foran was outstanding in the match would be an understatement. In addition to scoring a hat trick, Ryan Foran recorded two try assists, two line breaks and two line break assists.

Ryan Foran’s opening try of his hat trick performance came in the 13th minute when he received the ball on the left forty metres from the line, easily bumping off the initial defender who attempted to engage him before using his right arm to palm off the second. From there Ryan Foran produced a right foot step to easily round the fullback and bring the ball around to put it down under the posts.

Ryan Foran’s second try came in the 26th minute when he ran a great outside shoulder line from eighteen metres out, breaking three tackles on his run to the line and once again was able to bring the ball around to put it down under the posts.

Ryan Foran completed his hat trick in the 48th minute when Riley Lack put up a huge bomb from near midfield which the Kyogle defence could not handle, Ryan Foran charged through to dive on the loose ball in the in-goal.

Ryan Foran recorded the first of his two try assists in the match in the 3rd minute when after receiving the ball forty seven metres out he kept running to his left, using a right arm fend to gain separation from two defenders before getting a pass away to his left for his fullback to dive over in the left corner.

Ryan Foran added a second try assist in the 41st minute when after he was put into a gap by a great ball from Byron Jones on halfway, Ryan Foran ran thirty metres downfield before passing to his left to put the Mustangs replacement left centre over in the left corner.

The 45th minute saw Ryan Foran record a line break assist when the ball was passed in his direction thirty metres out from his own line, Ryan Foran had to reach forward and down low to take receipt of the ball before passing the ball to his left in one motion to put his support runner away on a thirty five metre run down the left touchline.

Ryan Foran broke the line himself in the 51st minute with a twenty metre line break before off-loading to his left with three would be tacklers on the ground in his wake.

Round Five of the GCRL U18 Division One competition on Sunday saw Kobie Mackay-Taylor start at left centre for Runaway Bay against Burleigh producing a strong performance in the Seagulls tough loss including scoring two tries and a try assist in the 53rd minute that locked the scores up at 18 all.

Kobie Mackay-Taylor scored his first try in the 47th minute when he dived over in the left corner after receiving a pass from the dummy half down a very skinny left blind side.

Kobie Mackay-Taylor added his second try in the final minute of the match when he followed through a two kicks with the ball bouncing up perfectly for Kobie Mackay-Taylor five metres from the try line for him to dive over adjacent to the left uprights.

In addition to his double, Kobie Mackay-Taylor set up a try in the 53rd minute when after receiving the ball on the left, he got outside of his direct opponent and as the Burleigh right winger came in, Kobie Mackay-Taylor produced an outstanding left arm flick pass to put Jack McKenzie over in the left corner.

Kobie Mackay-Taylor’s afternoon got off to a positive start in the 6th minute when he made a sixteen metre run to just over the halfway mark and did well to stay in the field of play after being tackled close to the left touchline. Then in the 19th minute Kobie Mackay-Taylor made a line break when after receiving the ball in centre field he ran to his left getting outside the Burleigh right sided defence and was able to make twenty two metres before being reeled in by the cover defence.

The 27th minute saw Kobie Mackay-Taylor once again take a strong hit-up making eleven metres to get the ball out of his own twenty metre area and then in the 51st minute when he made thirteen metres from right on his own try line.

Whilst he scored a double and set up another, Kobie Mackay-Taylor’s defence was even more impressive than his efforts in attack with the left centre making two try saving tackles. Kobie Mackay-Taylor’s first try saving tackle coming in the 21st minute when he brought down Burleigh right second rower Aston Bai when he looked certain to score.

Kobie Mackay-Taylor was at it again in the 55th minute when he brought down Aston Bai once again with a great tackle with the try line beckoning the Burleigh second rower.

Kobie Mackay-Taylor also produced a strong tackle in the 7th minute when defending from a scrum he raced up to hit the Burleigh right centre just after he had received the ball with Kobie Mackay-Taylor’s initial contact forcing the ball loose.

After his Round Five double last weekend, Rowan Mansfield was understandably named to start on the right wing on Sunday for Ballina in Round Six of the NRRRL First Grade competition against the Mullumbimby Giants, a match that saw him record a 16th minute try assist when he retrieved a Ballina mid-field bomb that the Giants could not handle and immediately ran towards the right touchline. A desperate tackle saw Rowan Mansfield being swung around by the jersey but he kept his wits about him to off-load to his five eight to run around and score under the posts.

Rowan Mansfield was also heavily involved in Ballina’s 7th minute try. Rowan Mansfield’s opposing winger tried to beat him down the touchline but Rowan Mansfield got hold of his jersey and as he was swinging him into touch the Mullumbimby desperately threw the ball back infield with the Ballina right second rower intercepting the pass and running the ball back to score.

To round out a very good first half, in the 39th minute, Rowan Mansfield ran back to field a Giants kick on the full ten metres out from his own line and return the ball twenty five metres.
