Titans contracted Marsden State High School student Taelon Te Whiu-Hopa started in the front row for the Tweed Heads Seagulls in the Round Three local derby against the Burleigh Bears on Saturday afternoon, leading from the front as the Seagulls prevailed 33 - 6.

Taelon Te Whiu-Hopa took the third hit-up of the match running an underneath line to the right of the play the ball making nine metres before following that run up with a hit-up on the 5th tackle of the same set of six.

Taelon Te Whiu-Hopa made a further ten metres in the 10th minute when he took the hit-up from a Tweed Heads penalty restart. Taelon Te Whiu-Hopa contributed a further thirteen metres to the metres that Tweed Heads gained in the match in the 60th minute when he got to within three metres of the try line before four Bears defenders finally stopped his forward progress.

Even though he was heavily marked every time that he ran the ball it did not stop Taelon Te Whiu-Hopa from making ground with a good example of that being in the 65th minute of the match when Taelon Te Whiu-Hopa ran onto the ball to the right of the play the ball and even though he as confronted by three Burleigh defenders, Taelon Te Whiu-Hopa was still able to rumble fourteen metres, the majority of which were post contact, to take the ball into Burleigh’s territory.

Taelon Te Whiu-Hopa was also on his game defensively against Burleigh including recording a crunching tackle in the early match on Burleigh winger Andrew Brennan. Taelon Te Whiu-Hopa backed that up in the 6th minute when he engulfed one of the Burleigh front rowers front on knocking the Bears player onto his back.

Taelon Te Whiu-Hopa was involved in another big tackle in the 11th minute, along with Jonah Beaven crunched the Burleigh fullback as he was trying to dart through the centre of the ruck, a run that he paid dearly for.

Titans contracted Matthew Barrow started Round One of the 2021 Cyril Connell Cup at fullback for Tweed Heads as the Seagulls took on the Ipswich Jets and moved to the left wing for the Round Three local derby against the Burleigh Bears on Saturday afternoon, scoring a double in the Seagulls 33 – 6 victory.

Matthew Barrow’s first try of the match was a long range affair coming in the 29th minute. With Burleigh attacking the line from close range they put in a grubber kick behind Tweed Heads left side defence, fullback Lewis Symonds got to the ball in the in goal darting to his left and getting the ball to Matthew Barrow who raced ninety metres untouched to score.

Matthew Barrow scored his second half try in the 43rd minute and it was a lot less spectacular. Matthew Barrow stayed close to the left touchline, receiving a looping pass which he took and took a step forward putting the ball down for probably the easiest try that he will ever score.

Matthew Barrow’s first contribution for the Seagulls in the match came in the opening minutes of the match when he was in a position to take a Burleigh clearing kick on the full and return the kick running hard into the Bears chasing defensive line.

Matthew Barrow backed that run up with another strong run in the 8th minute when he took the Burleigh kick-off after the Jacob Sa try on the full and charged into the defensive line and immediately fought to get to his feet and consequently was awarded a penalty when he was held down.

Matthew Barrow came off his left wing once again in the 13th minute to take a hit-up in centre field, making ten metres to get the ball out of their own twenty metre area. Matthew Barrow made even more metres in the 36th minute with a run of more than forty metres down the left side of the field, bumping off the first defender who had tried to tackle him front on. Matthew Barrow got within ten metres of the try line before two Burleigh defenders were finally able to break him down.

In the 42nd minute made a further strong run making ten metres and bringing the ball out of the Burleigh twenty metre area and Matthew Barrow was awarded a penalty when he was not allowed to his feet quickly. Being awarded that penalty was telling as from the subsequent kick for touch and set of six, Matthew Barrow scored in the left corner for his second try of the match.

Matthew Barrow rounded out a more than solid match in the 68th minute when he took a Burleigh kick-off from Keahn Skipps field goal, on the full, running the ball back to the Seagulls thirty five metre mark and put Tweed Heads back onto the attack immediately.

Matthew Barrow also produced another highlight reel play and so nearly pulled up a great try saving tackle in the 39th minute. Burleigh made a break through the centre of the field from long range and it looked a certain try but Matthew Barrow came from his left wing to five full length from behind dragging the bell loose just as the Burleigh player was about to score. The referee however called play on with Tana Tuhaka, the Burleigh five eight picking the ball up and diving over. The fact that a try was ultimately awarded should not detract however to the outstanding piece of play from Matthew Barrow.

Titans contracted Bailey McConnell started at halfback last Saturday for Burleigh in the Round Three local derby against the Tweed Heads Seagulls.

Burleigh may have gone down in the match 33 – 6 but that should not discount an outstanding performance from Bailey McConnell and for me he was clearly the Bears best in the match and without him I believe that Burleigh may well have lost by a much greater margin.

In addition to just an outstanding overall match, Bailey McConnell produced a few pieces of really smart play, the first of which came in the 11th minute with Burleigh defending ten metres out from their own line. Tweed Heads had Burleigh back peddling and Keahn Skipps ran at the line with a lot of space behind the line. When Skipps kicked through Bailey McConnell slide to his right connecting the ball with his right foot and keeping it in front of him. Consequently Bailey McConnell retrieved the ball and made a couple of metres downfield to take all of the pressure off Burleigh’s defence.

Just a couple of tackles later, Bailey McConnell took the ball on the right side of the field, dummying to his outside and then stepping back inside to beat a defender to get the ball out to the halfway after a ten metre run.

In the 14th minute Bailey McConnell recorded his first line break assist of the match when he held the ball up perfectly after going into the defensive line to put second rower Max Murphy into a gap on the right side of the field.

Bailey McConnell created his own space in the 23rd minute with a great show and go, once again on the right, to slice through the line ten metres from the try line, but was finally put to ground less than a metre out.

Bailey McConnell almost scored from a smart piece of individual brilliance in the 28th minute. Initially the ball from the dummy half to Bailey McConnell went over his head with Burleigh attacking ten metres out, Bailey McConnell raced back to the twenty taking possession and darting to his left where he dummied in that direction slicing through the line and it was only a desperate diving tackle that stopped Bailey McConnell from scoring.

Bailey McConnell made a line break of his own in the 64th minute when he darted from his right side of the field over to a short left blind side, dummying to his outside to beat one defender who was desperately trying to keep hold of Bailey McConnell’s jersey. After getting away from that defender, Bailey McConnell passed back inside to his left but unfortunately his support runner could not reel the ball in with a lot of open space in front of him.

Halftime did not slow Bailey McConnell down as in the 37th minute he once again produced another outstanding individual effort. Tweed Heads were on the attack less than ten metres from the line and Keahn Skipps grubbered into the in-goal. Bailey McConnell sensed the threat and raced back and to his left getting to the ball a metre away from the dead ball line with Seagulls chasers flying through. Bailey McConnell continued to his left beating the attempted tackles of three Seagulls players in the in goal and impressively was able to get two metres into the field of play before being stopped.

It was a case of history repeating itself in the 57th minute when again Keahn Skipps grubbered into the in-goal from close range and once again Bailey McConnell darted to his left to get to the ball after it had travelled two metres into the in-goal with Seagulls chasers pouring through. As he did earlier in the match through shear effort Bailey McConnell was able to get the ball two metres back into play.

Bailey McConnell’s shear effort and intensity was on display in the 42nd minute when he kicked deep into Seagulls territory from the halfway line, Bailey McConnell chased his own kick hard and brought dangerous Seagulls fullback Lewis Symonds down with a great individual low tackle just twelve metres out from his own line.

Bailey McConnell’s all-out effort was also highlighted in the 62nd minute when he charged downfield after Burleigh kicked off, getting downfield in front of the defensive line and putting a hit on Seagulls opposite number Keahn Skipps, then from marker Bailey McConnell took on and put to the ground Seagulls centre Tevita Tau’a’alo.

The tackle that Bailey McConnell made on his opposite number Keahn Skipps was not the first time the two had come together as in the 57th minute from a Tweed Heads scrum win, Bailey McConnell put his right shoulder into his opposite number putting him on the ground after forcing him back two metres.

Even with the game well and truly over at 33 – 6 down and when I mean over I mean after the final siren, Bailey McConnell just could not be kept out of the game. Tweed Heads were awarded a penalty with the final siren sounding and let one of their front rowers take a penalty kick for goal directly in front of the posts.

The front rower missed the kick with the ball travelling under the posts, Bailey McConnell reached up to take the ball on the full and instead of just submitting to the tackle, darted to his left getting to ten metres out before the defence converged. Even that was not enough for Bailey McConnell as he tried to off-load to a support player, the ball went to ground and Bailey McConnell jumped up off the ground to retrieve it.

Even though the play did not work and Burleigh lost 33 – 6, Bailey McConnell’s effort after the final siren says a lot of good things about Bailey McConnell as a player and also about why the Titans snared him and got his name onto a contract.

The Tweed Heads Seagulls 2021 Hastings Deering’s Colts side includes talented Northern NSW centre Tom Vickery.

Tom Vickery started in the centres in the Seagulls recent 2021 trial against the Burleigh Bears.

After spending the 2020 off season training with the Melbourne Storm U20 side left centre Thomas Vickery could not have done any more in Murwillumbah's 38-36 loss to the Bilambil Jets on Sunday in Round Two of the NRRRL First Grade competition scoring a double and kicking six from six to finish with twenty points. Before his Round Two heroics Thomas Vickery had also started Round One at left centre against the Tweed Coast Raiders.

Thomas Vickery also crossed in Round Five against the Tweed Coast in a Mustangs two point 18 – 16 victory and has been the case all season Thomas Vickery started the match at left centre. Murwillumbah, from fifty metres out ran the ball down a short blind side, the ball went through the hands of Ked Hill to Thomas Vickery who put Caleb Nicholls into space down the right touch line. In the Mustangs 2020 NRRRL Green First Grade Grand Final loss to the Tweed Coast Raiders 24 – 18, Thomas Vickery once again started at left centre.

The young utility started the 2019 season of starting at five eight in Round One for the Northern Rivers Titans in the U18 Laurie Daley Cup competition against the Newcastle Knights Development Squad.

Thomas Vickery tried his guts out the entire match and setup the Northern Rivers Titans sole try of the match late in the second half. Thomas Vickery was operating on the left side of the field and threw a great cut-out pass to left winger Jahvis Kendall who went over untouched and was even able to bring the ball around by about ten metres or so to make the conversion easier for Thomas Vickery.

Round Two saw Thomas Vickery move to right centre for the Northern Rivers Titans match against the Parramatta Eels.

Round Three saw another position change for Thomas Vickery when he started at fullback against the North Coast Bulldogs in Grafton and converted Cooper Many’s second half try near the left upright.

Thomas Vickery played his first NRRRL First Grade match of the 2019 in Round Eight against Mullumbimby scoring in a Mustangs 28 – 10 victory.

Thomas Vickery has also played in three NRRRL regular season Reserve Grade matches in 2019 with his debut coming early in August against Tweed Coast, scoring in that match.

Thomas Vickery made his deserved NRRRL First Debut as a 17 year old Casino RSM in April and went on to play in eleven First Grade matches, scoring his first try in his third match against Mullumbimby. Thomas Vickery followed that up with a double later in the season against Evans Head, a match which also saw him kick a conversion.

Size is not going to be a concern for the Burleigh Bears Hastings Deering’s Colts squad in 2021 with Braden Amundsen in the squad.

Brenton Daley-Holten’s first try came when he received the ball five metres out from the Runaway Bay line after a backline movement by the Jets. When he took the ball Brenton Daley-Holten was stationary and right on the touch line, but he produced a right foot step away from the sideline and got down low to dive over.

Brenton Daley-Holten’s second row was a spectacular effort, Bilambil put up a mid-field bomb which Brenton Daley-Holten jumped over the pack to take, critically maintaining his feet when he landed and immediately took off running thirty metres to score under the posts.

In 2016 Brenton Daley-Holten was part of the South Tweed U16 side that won their Group 18 junior rugby league grand final 34-6 over the Bilambil Jets and has played in multiple Gold Coast Titans Development Squad matches over the last couple of seasons.

From a representative perspective Brenton Daley-Holten also had a very good season in 2016 representing Group 18 at the U16 level and then progressing to being selected in the East Coast Dolphins U16 side for the New South Wales Country age championships where he was selected on the wing and played in all four of their matches, including a semi-final loss to Newcastle.

Brenton Daley-Holten has previously represented Group 18 at the U14 level in 2014 where he played a couple of games at five eight.

Brenton Daley-Holten played the majority of his football in 2016 in the centres, except for time on the wing for the East Coast Dolphins U16 side but in 2017 he has also spent time at fullback, certainly when playing for his club side and in that position, is a strong runner of the football.

With Cameron Brown at halfback Burleigh is not short of talented playmakers for the 2021 Hastings Deering’s Colts campaign.

Cameron Brown made his first 2021 appearance when he started at halfback for the Burleigh Hastings Deering’s Colts side in their trial against the Easts Tigers that ended in a twenty all draw with Cameron Brown scoring a 90 metres intercept try in the second half as well as being heavily involved in multiple other positive plays for the Bears.

Cameron Brown also produced some smart pieces of play in the match, including in the 24th minute when he smartly blacked an attacking grubber kick with his left foot, picking the ball up and making a couple of additional metres to ease the pressure on his team.

Cameron Brown was at it again in the 33rd minute of the first half when he tracked back to retrieve an Easts chip kick, after retrieving the ball Cameron Brown burst through the fractured Easts defensive line running sixty metres before looking to offload to his left to his fullback, but unfortunately the ball went to ground.

In the early minutes of the second half, Cameron Brown who operated on the left side of the field in the match showed that he is not adverse to taking the line on, when he dummied to his left then stepping off his right foot to beat one defender before being collared, Cameron Brown however was able to get his arms free to offload to keep the play going.

The following week in the Burleigh Hastings Deering’s Colts trial against the Tweed Heads Seagulls, Cameron Brown was once again in the starting side at halfback. Cameron Brown showcased his elite kicking skills in just the 2nd minute of the match when he put a right footed stab kick into the Tweed Heads in-goal forcing a line drop out.

Cameron Brown added a try assist to his impressive performance in the 45th minute when a long cut out pass to his right put Kalani Skipps into space down the left touchline and from there the winger was able to dive over in the corner.

Cameron Brown just could not be kept out of the match and that continued in the 54th minute when he intercepted an errant pass four metres out from his own line, racing sixty seven metres down the left touchline before being dragged into touch.

Cameron Brown added a second try assist in the match when in the 57th minute, Cameron Brown chipped over the Tweed Heads defensive line forty metres out, regathering the ball and sending a pass to his left to trailing second rower Sam McIntyre who ran twenty metres to dive over untouched.

Cameron Brown started Round One of the 2020 Hastings Deering’s Colts competition for the Burleigh Bears at half against the Wynnum Manly Seagulls scoring as Burleigh started their 2021 campaign with a first up victory.

Cameron Brown made his Gold Coast Rugby League First Grade debut in Round Three against the Ormeau Shearers originally named to start off the bench and scoring in Burleigh’s 48 – 26 victory but Cameron Brown in fact started the match at half back and scored when a stab kick he put through rebounded off the left upright for him to collect and dive over.

Cameron Brown maintained his spot as Burleigh’s starting half back in their Round Four match against the Tugun Seahawks.

Cameron Brown played the majority of the Gold Coast Rugby League U20 competition with Helensvale including starting at half back and captaining the Hornets side in the 2020 GCRL U20 Grand Final against the Currumbin Eagles. Cameron Brown kicked two conversions in the Grand Final but it was not enough as Helensvale went down 22 – 20.

Cameron Brown also scored in the Grand Final when he ran out of dummy half, darting down a short right blind side acrobatically diving full length with the ball in his right hand to get the ball down just inside the right corner post.

Cameron Brown was also heavily involved in another of Helensvale’s tries. Cameron Brown received the ball operating on the right. Cameron Brown was immediately under pressure, stepping off his right foot to beat the initial defender. Once he had gained space, Cameron Brown darted back to his right, putting in a right foot chip kick which came down ten metres out and ten metres in from touch. Helensvale right centre Brent Barnes was able to take the ball on the full and offload to Harrison Trathen to score in the right corner.

Cameron Brown also produced an outstanding play in the Grand Final when one of his kick off’s hit the cross bar on the first bounce, ultimately going dead to force Currumbin to drop out for Helensvale to get the ball back.

Cameron Brown was one of the key reasons that Helensvale got to the Grand Final, starring in the Hornets last minute Preliminary Final victory against Burleigh contributing three conversions and a try assist to the 26 – 24 nail biting victory. Cameron Brown’s try assist came when he put in a well weighted right foot stab kick for his left winger to cross.

Cameron Brown also produced a key play in the dying minutes. After Burleigh scored with less than three minutes to go to lead 24 – 22, Cameron Brown’s short high kick off to the left was not handled by Burleigh and was retrieved by Helensvale just beyond the ten metre line. Helensvale’s game winning try in the left corner came in the set of six following the Hornets getting the kick off back.

Over the course of the 2020 GCRL U20 regular season, Cameron Brown was as good as any player in the competition, including an outstanding display in Round Eight against the Mudgeeraba Redbacks which saw him score one try and provide try assists for two others.

Cameron Brown’s first try assist came when he put in a right foot stab kick into the left corner for his winger to score. The key to the try was that Cameron Brown took the ball right to the line before kicking and thus not telegraphing the kick.

Cameron Brown’s second try assist also came from a kick, but in totally different circumstances to the first. Cameron Brown backed up a long break through the centre of the ruck, getting a late offload from his front rower. Cameron Brown stopped on the spot as he was being surrounded by defenders and actually backtracked to his right to regain separation. After assessing his options, it appeared that Cameron Brown would look to break through three defenders, but instead from forty metres out put in an outstanding right foot chip kick to his left winger to score.

Cameron Brown’s Round Eight try was no less impressive than his second try assist. From twenty metres out from his own line, Cameron Brown put in a superb chip kick that hit his left winger on the chest. Instead of sitting back and admiring his work, Cameron Brown backed up on the inside and received a pass from his left winger, veering around one defender to then outpace the cover defence to score an outstanding try.

Cameron Brown also scored an impressive try in Round Six against the Burleigh Bears when he chased through a grubber kick and even though it appeared that the Burleigh fullback had the ball covered, Cameron Brown did not give up on the play, diving full length to beat the fullback to the ball, getting downward pressure on the ball under the posts.

Cameron Brown played in all twenty two of Burleigh’s 2019 Hastings Deering’s Colts matches including their three finals in2019 scoring twelve tries for a 54.45% strike rate. Prior to Round Ten (tries post that noted below) Cameron Brown scored in Round One against Norths, Round Eight against the Western Mustangs and Round Nine against Redcliffe.

One of Cameron Brown’s tries came in Round Ten against the Northern Pride. Cameron Brown had come off the bench to play the dummy half role and was able to dive over from close range to his right in the second half to score.

Cameron Brown also scored in Round Eleven against the Central Capra’s when he followed through his own bomb and retrieved the ball after it was mishandled to score under the posts for Burleigh’s first try.

Cameron Brown had an outstanding match in Round Fifteen against Ipswich constantly sniping at the Jets defensive line and scored a try of his own when he intercepted a pass to run ninety metres to score, with no defender able to keep up with him over the journey.

Cameron Brown also recorded another try assist when he grubbered for Reece Tapine to score and was also heavily involved in tries for Lofi Khan-Periera and Will Evans.

Cameron Brown also scored in Round Seventeen against Tweed Heads as a result of a good individual effort. He received the ball to the right of the play the ball around fourteen metres out from the line and after shaping to pass to his backline to his right, stepped off his right foot to get through the initial defensive line and then used another right foot step to round the fullback to score under the posts.

Cameron Brown added a further try in Round Nineteen against Redcliffe when after sending a great ball to his left to allow Will Evans to get outside his man, he backed up on the inside to get the pass back from Will Evans to score untouched.

Cameron Brown maintained his try scoring pace in Round Twenty against the Wester Mustangs when he backed up a break by fullback Jayden Campbell to score a long range try.

Cameron Brown also had a try assist in the match when he grubbered into the in goal for the Burleigh left winger to dive on the ball. The kick was a lot harder than it looked as when he kicked it with the outside of his right foot Cameron Brown was running directly towards the left touch line.

Cameron Brown scored for the third match in a row when he scored in Round Twenty One against the Northern Pride when he was on hand to dive on a Zac McCormack kick. Zac McCormack took a couple of steps to his left out of dummy half close to the line and put in a deft left foot kick into the in goal for Cameron Brown to dive on it after it bounced off the legs of a few Northern Pride defenders.

Cameron Brown added a double in Round Twenty Three against the Central Queensland Capra’s. Cameron Brown’s first try (and the first of the match) resulted from him following through a short attacking kick from Shallin Fuller to get to the ball first about a metre from the dead goal line.

Cameron Brown’s second try (and last of the match)was an opportunist one, Central Queensland were throwing the ball around with less than a minute to go and as they threw it out to their left, Cameron Brown was on hand to take the intercept and run twenty metres to score.

Cameron Brown also had a try assist in the match and a spectacular one at that. Central Queensland were on the attack and put through a short grubber kick about twenty metres out, Cameron Brown trapped the ball with his left foot, picking it up and running seventy metres before the defence converged, Cameron Brown evaded the defence long enough for Will Evans to loop around behind him and score in the left corner.

In Week Two of the 2019 Hastings Deering’s Colts Finals Cameron Brown started at half in Burleigh’s 42 – 12 win against Norths.

Cameron Brown’s 2019 Hastings Deering’s Colts season came to an end when he started at half for Burleigh as they went down 23 – 16 to Sunshine Coast in the Preliminary Final.

In addition to the tries noted above Cameron Brown has also scored against Norths in Round One, the Western Mustangs in Round Eight and Redcliffe in Round Nine.

In total Cameron Brown has started eleven matches at half, one at five eight, one from the bench and the other two matches at hooker.

In an early season Hastings Deering’s Colts competition bye week, Cameron Brown, instead of having the weekend off started at five eight for Helensvale in their GCRL Round Seven U20 match against Mudgeeraba and scored in the Hornets 38 – 32 victory.

Cameron Brown also started at five eight in Round 12 of the GCRL U20 competition, scoring a double against Currumbin. Both tries highlighted Cameron Brown’s ability to run the ball and he also had a try assist when he put Brent Barnes through a gap on the right side of the field.

During the Hasting Deering’s Colts Round Eighteen bye week, Cameron Brown was back in the Helensvale U20 side at half and added to his try scoring tally with another try as the Hornets defeated Runaway Bay 32 - 26.

The try was a long range intercept. Cameron Brown flew out of the line as Runaway Bay were throwing the ball around taking the intercept and running ninety metres to score under the posts. As soon as he took the intercept it was shut the gate, no one was going to catch him.

Cameron Brown came into the Burleigh Colts side in Round Eleven of 2018 against Easts starting from the interchange bench and went on to play an additional nine Colts matches, splitting time between starting in the halves and from the interchange bench. Cameron Brown started five matches, the first being in Round Twelve against the Mackay Cutters.

Cameron Brown scored four Colts tries in 2018, including a Round Twenty Four double against Easts and tries in Round Twenty and Eighteen against Victoria and Redcliffe respectively. Whether or not it really means anything, all of Cameron Brown’s tries came in matches where he started.

2021 will be Noah Croudance’s first season in the Hasting’s Deering’s Colts competition and Burleigh will be the benefactor of the young outside back’s talent.

Noah Croudace started on the right wing for the Burleigh Hastings Deering’s Colts side in their trial against the Easts Tigers which finished in a twenty all draw but if not for some outstanding defensive efforts from Noah Croudace Burleigh may not have drawn the match.

Noah Croudace impressive defensive effort started in just the 4th minute when he forced the ball loose from the grasp of the Easts Tigers left winger when he was racing towards the left corner after taking the ball on the full from a cross field kick. Noah Croudace had to readjust quickly after the ball had gone over his head but he spun around to make the try saving tackle.

The Easts Tigers once again may have scored had it not been from Noah Croudace in the 24th minute, when facing a three on one overlap, Noah Croudace came off his wing to bring down the Tigers left second rower (No. 12) with a copy book left shoulder tackle, ensuring that the Easts second rower had no chance to get the ball away.

The following week as the Burleigh Hastings Deering’s Colts side as they took on the Tweed Heads Seagulls in a trial, Noah Croudace moved to the bench for the match against the Bears local rivals..

Noah Croudace started Round One of the 2020 MM Cup competition for the Burleigh Bears on the right wing against the Wynnum Manly Seagulls which unfortunately ended up being the only round player of the 2020 MM Cup competition.

When training initially restarted for the revised 2020 Gold Coast Rugby League season, Noah Croudace commenced training with the Burleigh U20 side but then transitioned back to the Burleigh U18 Division One side.

When the Gold Coast Rugby League competition started in late July 2020 Noah Croudace played for the Burleigh Bears U18 Division One side, primarily on the right wing including scoring a double in Round Two against the Currumbin Eagles. In fact for the majority of the U18 Division One competition Noah Croudace was a regular try scorer for the Bears.

After being part of the Burleigh U18 Division One side that defeated Runaway Bay in the Preliminary Final, Noah Croudace started at right centre for Burleigh in the 2020 Gold Coast Rugby League U18 Division One Grand Final against the Currumbin Eagles.

As the 2020 season progressed Noah Croudace also played a number of matches for the Burleigh GCRL U20 side also playing primarily on the wing in that competition although he did start a number of matches at right centre as well. Noah Croudace was part of the Burleigh U20 Preliminary Final side that went down in the last minute to Helensvale 26 – 24.

In 2019 Noah Croudace was part of the Burleigh Bears MM Cup squad and was named on an extended bench for Round Four against Townsville but unfortunately did not make the final seventeen but made his debut starting on the wing in Round Six as Burleigh overcame the previously unbeaten Wynnum Manly Seagulls to finish the 2019 season on a high with the 23 – 22 victory.

Noah Croudace played the 2019 season with Burleigh in the GCRL U18 Division One competition playing in six regular season matches, scoring five tries to finish with a strike rate of 83.33%. 2019 also saw Noah Croudace play multiple matches for PBC in both the Langer Cup and GIO Cup competitions including starting on the right wing for PBC in their heart breaking Gold Point GIO Cup Queensland semi-final 23 – 22 loss to Marsden State High School.

In 2021 Laz Sua is part of the Tweed Heads Seagulls Hastings Deering’s Colts squad once again and started from the bench in their final 2021 trial against the Burleigh Bears. Laz Sua came into the match around the 24th minute, playing in the second row and made an immediate impact making sixteen metres in his first hit-up of the match bringing the ball out of his own territory.

Laz Sua started Round One of the 2020 Hastings Deering’s Colts competition for the Tweed Heads Seagulls at right centre against the Northern Pride.

It was interesting to see Laz Sua start in the centres in Round One in 2020 as over recent season he has spent time a lot of time in the front row, at hooker, in the second row and also at lock in club, representative and school boy rugby league rather than in the back line.

Laz Sua played his first match in the 2020 Gold Coast Rugby League First Grade competition in Round Six starting in the second row for the Ormeau Shearers in their match against the Mudgeeraba Redbacks. Laz Sua also started from the bench in Round Seven against the Southport Tigers and in Round Eight against Runaway Bay.

In the final regular season round of the 2020 Gold Coast Rugby League First Grade competition being Round Ten, Laz Sua started from the bench for the Shearers as they took on the Currumbin Eagles to round one their 2020 season.

Laz Sua started the 2019 season as part of the Souths Logan Hastings Deering’s Colts side playing in five matches for the Magpies before heading back to play in the GCLR First Grade competition with the Ormeau Shearers with his first match being in Round Sixteen against Currumbin when he came off the bench. Laz Sua also came off the bench in Round Seventeen.

Laz Sua made his first start since coming back to Ormeau in Round Eighteen of the 2019 GCRL First Grade competition when he started at hooker against Southport and also came off the bench in Rounds Nineteen and Twenty also spending time in the dummy half role.

Laz Sau started off the 2019 season with the Souths Logan Magpies U20 Hastings Deering’s Colts side, playing his first match in Round Three against Norths when he started the match in the front row.

In total for Souths Logan Laz Sua played in five Hastings Deering’s Colts matches this season, starting three in the front row, one at lock being Round Five against Burleigh and one from the interchange bench which was in Round Six against the Northern Pride.

The powerful nuggetty young Gold Coast local had an outstanding 2018 season. Even in the 2018 pre-season Laz Sua was in outstanding form. In Tweed Heads MM trial against Souths Logan at Waterford, the Seagulls were on the back foot for the first two quarters but Laz Sua’s introduction made a significant difference and when he was on the field he provided momentum through his hit-ups and defensive starch and that was just a trial!

In the MM Cup season proper in 2018 Laz Sua started in the front row of all seven of Tweed Head’s matches including their semi-final against South’s Logan. Laz Sua did not score any tries in the MM Cup this season, but was rewarded for his outstanding effort in Round Five against the Townsville Blackhawks when he converted Tweed Heads final try in a big 72 – 6 victory.

After Tweed Heads finals elimination, Laz Sua moved directly to the Tweed Heads Seagulls Colts side starting in his debut in the front row in Round Ten against Ipswich and came off the bench in Round Eleven against the Northern Pride who were top of the table at that point. Round Twelve saw Laz Sua once again start on the bench. He was also on the bench for the Seagulls in Rounds Thirteen and Seventeen to Twenty Four.

Laz Sua moved to the Gold Coast Rugby League competition in Round Eight of that competition, coming off the interchange bench for the Ormeau Shearers who unfortunately suffered a 74 – 12 loss to a rampaging Bilambil Jets side. In total Laz Sua played in five GCRKL First Grade matches in 2018.

In 2017 in addition to playing for Keebra Park, Laz Sua was selected in the South Coast U18 side and from there was selected in the Queensland U18 Open Schoolboy side for the ASSRL Championship including scoring a try on Day Three in a 28-18 loss to New South Wales Combined Catholic Colleges.

Laz Sua and his Keebra Park Open team mates had an outstanding 2017 GIO Cup campaign with the Gold Coast based school winning the National final with Laz Sua starting the final in the second row and playing on the left side of the field against Westfield’s Sports High School, with Keebra Park winning 25 - 12.

Laz Sua also started at left second row for Keebra Park in their Queensland GIO Cup Grand Final victory against Marsden State High School.

Laz Sua was also a member of the Tweed Heads Seagulls MM Cup side for the 2017 version of that competition and played for Queensland Samoa U18 squad for the QPICC tournament that was held in October 2017.

Laz Sua played in club football in 2017 with the Ormeau Shearers across a number of competitions including the U17 Division One competition, U19’s, the Doug Lipp Cup and five first grade matches. In the U17 Division One competition, Laz Sua played in five matches scoring three tries including a double against Burleigh with his other try coming against Mudgeeraba. In the U19 competition, Laz Sua has played in nine matches scoring against Runaway Bay in June and also kicking a late conversion against Mudgeeraba.

Laz Sua made his Doug Lipp Cup debut in June 2017 against Tugun and celebrated by scoring on debut. Playing first grade at any level as a 17 year is no mean feat and Laz Sua achieved that feat on Sunday June 18 2017 when he came on from the interchange bench against Currumbin. Laz Sua’s other first grade matches came against Runaway Bay, Bilambil, Currumbin again and the Southport Tigers.

During the 2016 season Laz Sua was selected as a result of his good form to represent Queensland at the U16 level. Unfortunately for Laz Sua he only got a handful of minutes on the field when he came on late and played in the dummy half role.

In relation to his club rugby league on the Gold Coast in 2016 Laz Sua played six matches for the Ormeau Shearers club in the U16 Division One competition and scored three tries in limited action, including scoring against eventual premiers Burleigh on two separate occasions and also against Helensvale.

For Gold Coast White in the CC Cup competition in 2016, Laz Sua played in all six of their games, splitting his time evenly between starting at hooker and at lock. He started at hooker in Rounds One, Six and Seven and started at lock in the other three games. He also crossed for two tries which came in Rounds One and Two, against Souths Logan and Gold Coast Green respectively.

In addition, after the completion of the 2016 season Laz Sua was a late replacement in the Team Toa side where he came off the bench in their loss to a NSW New Zealand side. In 2016 he was also a member of the QAS squad and in 2015 made the Queensland Maroon U15 side for the ASSRL U15 championships after playing a leading role for South Coast at the U15 QSSRL championships where he played the majority of his matches in the centres.

Jayden Sharp was also impressive defensively in his first stint on the field in the trial including a big tackle (the first that he made after coming on) in the 24th minute of the first half. Jayden Sharp produced another strong hit, this time in the second half when from a Burleigh kick-off Jayden Sharp’s initial contact forced the ball loose from the Easts Tigers forwards grasp as he was returning the kick-off.

Unfortunately Jayden Sharp missed the 2019 season but was back in 2020 being named in the Burleigh Hastings Deering’s Colts squad.

Jayden Sharp started Round One of the 2020 Hastings Deering’s Colts competition for the Burleigh Bears at lock against the Wynnum Manly Seagulls.

When the 2020 Gold Coast Rugby League competition restarted in August, Jayden Sharp was part of the Burleigh Bears side that was looking to repeat their 2019 GCRL First Grade Premiership success starting Round One of the GCRL First Grade competition against Southport from the interchange bench.

Jayden Sharp started the 2019 season in the Burleigh MM Cup side and had a solid Round One on the Sunshine Coast being part of Burleigh’s 52 – 22 MM Cup victory as well as scoring a first half try for the Bears.

Jayden Sharp’s sole 2019 U20 Colts try came in Round Sixteen in the local derby against the Tweed Heads Seagulls.

Post the MM Cup competition Jayden Sharp played a number of Helensvale in the GCRL competition prior to his inevitable promotion to the Burleigh Colts side.

In his first U19 match of the season for Helensvale after the completion of the MM Cup competition Jayden Sharp dominated Beaudesert scoring a hat trick and a fortnight later scored a double against Ormeau. In Round Sixteen with the Burleigh Colts side having a bye, Jayden Sharp was back for the U19 Helensvale side starting in the front row an scoring his six try against Runaway Bay. The following week Jayden Sharp also played in the Doug Lipp Cup this time against Ormeau and also scored. In each of his three Doug Lipp appearances Jayden Sharp was backing up after playing in the U19 match earlier in the day.

Jayden Sharp had an outstanding 2017 season with the Helensvale Hornets in the GCJRL U17 Division One competition culminating in him starting at lock in Helensvale’s 34 – 20 Grand Final victory over the Ormeau Shearers.

Jayden Sharp played in fourteen 2017 U17 Division One contests and three more in the U17 Division Two contests for Helensvale this season. In the U17 Division Two competition, Jayden Sharp scored all of his three tries in that grade in his last match for the year there when he scored a hat trick against Beaudesert in July.

Jayden Sharp scored a hat trick against Ormeau in June and scored doubles in consecutive matches late in the season including a semi-final against the Bilambil Jets. The match prior to the semi-final Jayden Sharp scored a double against Runaway Bay.

In addition to playing for Helensvale in 2017, Jayden Sharp also represented the U18 PNG Kokomo’s in the QPIIC tournament held late last year and had an outstanding match in that competition against the Cook Islands when in addition to scoring PNG’s first try set up a second half PNG try with a deft chip kick for his winger to cross. Jayden Sharp was almost the hero for PNG against Queensland Maori but unfortunately he had a try disallowed which would have broken an 8 all deadlock.

One of the more naturally gifted players in the 2021 Burleigh Hastings Deering’s Colts squad is Izaya Leato-Beckett.

Izaya Leato-Beckett’s first hit out of the 2021 season was when he lined up for the Burleigh Bears Hastings Deering’s Colts squad against a Titans U19 selection in late January at Burleigh.

Izaya Leato-Beckett then started at fullback, playing the first half of the Bears trial against the Easts Tigers against the Easts Tigers that finished in a twenty all draw with Izaya Leato-Beckett performing solidly both from an attacking perspective as well as positionally.

Late in the first half, Izaya Leato-Beckett almost got himself on the Burleigh try scoring list when he backed up a long break by Cameron Brown but unfortunately Cameron Brown’s pass back inside to Izaya Leato-Beckett went to ground.

The following week in the Burleigh Hastings Deering’s Colts trial against the Tweed Heads Seagulls, Izaya Leota-Beckett moved to the bench for the final trial.

The tall long striding young Gold Coast local started from the bench for the 2020 Burleigh Hastings Deering’s Colts side in their Round One victory against the Wynnum Manly Seagulls coming on for his Hastings Deering’s Colts debut in the first half of the match and making an immediate impact in an encouraging debut.

Post the 2020 Community Rugby League restart Izaya Leato-Beckett played for the Ormeau Shearers in the Gold Coast Rugby League competition including scoring an impressive individual try in Round Seven against the Helensvale Hornets.

Izaya Leato-Beckett was also outstanding in Round Ten, scoring a hat trick against the Currumbin Eagles, to ensure that Ormeau clinched the 2020 Gold Coast Rugby League U20 Minor Premiership.

Unfortunately Ormeau lost their Preliminary Final against Currumbin but Izaya Leato-Beckett was one of Ormeau’s best as well as scoring one of the two tries that Ormeau scored in the 26 – 8 loss to the Eagles.

Also in early 2020 Izaya Leato-Beckett was named in the 2020 Queensland U20 Touch team but their competition did not go ahead due to the shut down as a result of the Civid 19 pandemic. Later in the 2020 year however Izaya Leato-Beckett was named in the Gold Coast Senior State Cup Mixed Open side for the 2020 Senior State Cup. Also in late 2020 Izaya Leato-Beckett was named in the 2021 Queensland State of Origin U20 Touch Team.

Izaya Leato-Beckett is better known as a touch player, representing both Queensland and Australia in recent years. In 2019 Izaya Leato-Beckett represented the U18 South Queensland Sharks at the Australian U18 Touch Championships recording a 100% strike rate through his seven matches at the Championships with a number of those tries coming from long range and as a result of Izaya Leato-Beckett using his impressive footwork through the middle of the field and then being able to comfortably outpace the cover defence over the remainder of the journey to the try line, on an number of occasions being over extended distances.
