Burleigh five eight Tyrese Walker has found his try scoring niche at five eight in the Bears U20 GCRL side and in Round Fourteen against Helensvale on the weekend scored his third try from just four appearances and what an outstanding individual try it as.

Tyrese Walker received the ball twenty metres out from his own try line on the right side of the field. After splitting the defence when he charged through a gap between two defenders, Tyrese Walker beat the Helensvale fullback with a deft right foot step before outpacing the cover defence.

Former Gold Coast Titans Development Squad member Brent Barnes maintained his 100% strike rate in both the GCRL U20 and Doug Lipp Cup competitions on the weekend with tries in each grade.

Brent Barnes made it seven tries from as many U20 matches in Round Fourteen on the weekend in Helensvale’s 30-22 loss to Burleigh. Playing five eight as he has in the last couple of weeks, Brent Brnes received the ball on the right side of the field about twelve metres out from the Burleigh line.

He beat the initial defender with a powerful right arm fend before darting over as three Burleigh defenders closed in on him. Even though he has played primarily fullback, wing or centre in his career to date, Brent Barnes is making a good fist of the five eight position this season.

Brent Barnes them backed up to score his second Doug Lipp Cup try from as many matches with an outstanding individual effort. Playing right centre Brent Barnes received the ball seventy metres out from the try line in space and then accelerated around the Bilambil left sided defence (James Roberts style) before cutting back inside off his left foot when it looked for all money like the Bilambil fullback and another cover defender was going to box him in before easily outpacing the remaining defenders to score an outstanding solo try.

Do you ever see an NRL side taking a chance on Brent again?

It was great to see Latrell Howe cross for the Burleigh Colts side in their Round 17 match against Tweed Heads last weekend. He has been one of the outstanding players in the GCRL U20 competition spending a lot of time at five eight for Burleigh and thus great to see him get an opportunity in the Hastings Deering’s Colts competition.

One of the more intriguing prospects in the NRRRL U18 competition is Byron Bay second rower Malik Kelly-Torrens who in Round Fifteen on the weekend scored his 4th try as Byron Bay defeated Casino RSM 28-12, he then backed up to play in the first grade match.

His other tries have come in matches against Evans Head twice and Lismore Marist Brothers. He has also kicked nine goals this season to have a points tally to date of 34 points.

In addition to his fourteen U18 matches, Malik Kelly-Torrens has played four matches in both NRRRL Reserve Grade and First Grade competitions.

Malik Kelly-Torrens made his Reserve Grade debut in late March against Lower Clarence and made his First Grade debut against Tweed Coast on Saturday 13 April.

Making his Hastings Deering’s Colts debut off the bench for Tweed Heads last weekend in Round Seventeen against Burleigh was former Ipswich winger Lachlan Watt.

He started off the 2019 season playing two matches for Ipswich in the MM Cup competition, with his first match coming in Round Two when he started from the bench and scoring against Burleigh, Lachlan Watt started on the wing in Round Three against Easts in his other MM Cup match this season.

Lachlan Watt moved down to play for the Tugun Seahawks, making his first appearance in the GCRL U18 Division Two competition in late April against Southport, playing two games to date in the U18 Division Two competition.

He moved up to the Doug Lipp Cup competition the following week against Burleigh scoring his first try in that competition the week after against Ormeau.

Lachlan Watt made GCRL First Grade debut the same day he scored his first Doug Lipp try when he came off the bench against Ormeau.

In his five GCRL First Grade matches to date, Lachlan Watt has either started off the bench or started on the wing.

Interesting to see Koia Katu Roberts named at fullback for Southport in their Round 11 U18 Division One match against Currumbin this weekend, as he has played a fair bit of hooker in recent seasons.
