After two matches for the Burleigh Colts side, Braden Amundsen took advantage of the Colts bye to line up in the second row for Helensvale in their GCRL U20 Round 11 30-18 win over Mudgeeraba and scoring in the 12 point win.

Playing right second rower, Braden Amundsen took the ball around ten metres out from the Mudgeeraba line, fending off the first attempted tackle before being corralled by three defenders. He then spun around 270 degrees to break free and score under the posts.

He has moved around a bit in recent seasons but Brent Barnes’s quality can not be denied and it as on show over the weekend for Helensvale.

In Round 8 of the U18 Division One competition, he started in the centres and scored a double against Currumbin and then scored four tries from right centre in the U20 competition also from the centre position against Mudgeeraba.

Brent Barnes first try was a long range effort when he received the ball early and get on the outside of his direct opponent and race 60 metres to score. His second try followed an outstanding chip and chase from Jayden Campbell who drew the fullback to send Brent Barnes on his way.

His third try was a set play from a scrum, Jayden Campbell received the ball from the back of the scrum and immediately kicked behind the Mudgeeraba defensive line from twenty metres out for Brent Branes to retrieve and put the ball down.

His fourth try and his only one in the second half was one built from strength, from around ten metres out from the try line, he shrugged off the first defender before splitting two defenders and dragging them across the line to score near the right corner flag.

If there is a better player running around in the NRRRL U18 competition than Casino RSM’s Lachlan West I have not seen them.

The young fullback was at it again in Round 11 last weekend scoring two tries and kicking three goals as Casino drew with Cudgen 18 all.

Helensvale’s Saxon Innes has had a very good U13 Division One season to date for Helensvale including representing the GC Vikings U13 side at the Hill Stumer Championships where he was named on the wing and scoring 12 tries through seven club matches, including a Round 8 double against Currumbin where he started at five eight. He usually starts at fullback for Helensvale but played Round 8 at five eight.

In fact Saxon Innes has scored in all seven of his matches to date, including a Round Four hat trick against Runaway Bay and further doubles in Round One against Southport and Round Six against Ormeau.
