Every player wants a good first touch of the ball in a match whether they are in the starting side or coming off the bench and Titans contracted Bailey Martin could not have had a better first touch for Tweed Heads in their MM Cup win against Burleigh yesterday.

Bailey Martin's first touch of the ball came in the 23rd minute when he took a hit-up to the right of the play the ball. Bailey Martin received the ball 38 metres out from his own line, immediately stepping off his left foot to beat two defenders and surge into space. Bailey Martin then produced another left foot step to beat the Burleigh full back around 35 metres out from the try line.

Bailey Martin then showcased his intelligence by immediately noting that he was unlikely to make the try line, and then as the cover defence converged on him, Bailey Martin threw a long pass to his left onto the chest of Keano Kini who scored untouched.

Sometimes it is the case of the unexpected that pays off on a football field and that was almost the case yesterday for Burleigh in the MM Cup match against Tweed Heads.

Early in the first half, with Burleigh on the attack, Titans contracted right second rower Seth Nikotemo put in a great chip kick from around ten metres out and it was only a great diving take on the full by Tweed Heads left winger Keano Kini that prevented what would have been an out of the box Burleigh try.

Titans contracted Tremain Spry started at right centre in Round One of the 2021 Queensland Cup season for the Tweed Heads Seagulls on Saturday afternoon against the Central Queensland Capra’s, scoring one try and setting up another. Tremain Spry’s try came in the second half when he ran onto a good short ball from Jayden Campbell to charge over from ten metres out to get the ball down ten metres in from the right corner post.

Tremain Spry’s try assist also came on the second half and was a result of him getting on the outside of his direct opponent. Tremain Spry got to the outside five metres from the line and likely could have scored himself but instead passed to his right to put Taylor Walters over in the right corner.

Playing all eighty minutes of the match, Tremain Spry ran for eighty two metres (twenty six post contact) had a line break for his try, the afore mentioned try assist, broke three tackles, played the ball at an average speed of 3.28 seconds and made fifteen tackles.

After taking a knock in Tweed Heads final 2021 MM Cup trial it was great to see Titans contracted Riley Lack was back in the Tweed Heads Seagulls MM Cup side on Saturday , starting at five eight in their Round Three local derby against Burleigh and did not miss a beat alongside Thomas Weaver, scoring one try and assisting in another in the Seagulls comprehensive victory.

Riley Lack scored in the 26th minute of the match when he chased through a kick out of dummy half midfield by Blake Mozer, Riley Lack got the ball just before the Burleigh fullback toeing the ball forward before retrieving the ball down low three metres from the line diving over to score fifteen metres in from the right corner post.

Riley Lack’s try assist came in just the 14th minute of the match when he ran the ball down a right blindside around twenty metres out from the line and as the defence converged on him, Riley Lack produced a great right arm out of the back of his hand flick pass to put Jayden Wright into a gap to cross for his second try of the match.

As a result of Tannah Boyd not being in the Titans final squad for the NRL match against the Bronco’s, he moved down to the Queensland Cup starting for Burleigh at half in a wet Round One match away to the Souths Logan Magpies yesterday afternoon.

Tannah Boyd’s elite kicking skills were in display in the match including a great high bomb to the right corner in just the 4th minute of the match which was dropped by Souths Logan with Corey Denniss on hand to clean up and cross wide out.

Burleigh only had the chance for Tannah Boyd to put up the kick as a result of a Souths Logan drop out when Tannah Boyd put up a bomb to the left corner which had to be forced dead by Souths Logan.

Tannah Boyd’s outstanding kicking continued in the 21st minute of the first half when forty metres out from the line Tannah Boyd kicked to the right corner with the kick pulling up in the Souths Logan in-goal which was impressive taking into account the wet and windy conditions and forced Cory Oates to take the ball dead.

Tannah Boyd played the entire eighty minutes of the match , running for seventeen metres (three post contact), had a the try assist noted above, made twenty tackles at an impressive 100% tackling efficiency at made 301 metres from eight kicks.

Titans contracted Ryan Foran started at left second row on Saturday in the MM Cup Round Three Gold Coast derby against the Burleigh Bears making an early contribution with a run that made twelve metres in the 12th minute of the match from a penalty restart.

Ryan Foran added to his strong match in the 23rd minute with a run that accounted for twenty valuable metres from the kick-off after Blake Mozer had scored. After receiving the ball on the ten metre mark, Ryan Foran was able to get the ball thirty seven metres away from his own line before eventually being wrestled to the ground by multiple Bears defenders.

Late in the first half Ryan Foran was on hand to continue to put pressure on Burleigh when he along with Kaleb Ngamanu was on hand to drag the Burleigh right winger into touch just out from his own line after he took a bomb on the field in the left corner.

In the 57th minute Ryan Foran produced probably his best run of the match with a twenty metre hit-up which including a left foot step to get out of the Seagulls won twenty metre area.

Titans contracted Syris Schmidt once again started at fullback for Burleigh in the MM Cup Round Three Gold Coast derby against the Tweed Heads Seagulls, scoring the final try of the match as the Bears went down to their fierce rivals.

Syris Schmidt scored in the 66th minute after getting into dummy half close to the Tweed Heads line. Syris Schmidt darted to the right out of dummy half from three metres out and was able to force his way over ten metres inside the right corner post.

Syris Schmidt almost had an early try assist when in just the 5th minute of the match, he took the ball down a short right blindside putting in a deft left foot chip but Tweed Heads fullback Jaylan De Groot got across to take the ball dead fractionally in front of the Burleigh chasers.

In the 10th minute of the match it was Syris Schmidt’s turn to be on alert when he had to move quickly to his left to stop a 40/20 which was kicked out of dummy half by Tweed’s Oscar Bryant. Syris Schmidt was also on guard in the 64th minute of the match when he had to track to his right as Tweed Heads made a break from inside their own twenty metre area. Syris Schmidt was confronted by Campbell Watchairs who had made the make with support inside and out but Syris Schmidt was able to corralle the winger and prevent any further damage on the score board.

Early in the second half in the 38th minute of the match, Syris Schmidt moved into dummy half darting out of that position to the right and was able to make fifteen metres before being brought down in the tackle.

Titans contracted Jack Cullen on Saturday started in the front row in the MM Cup Round Three Gold Coast derby against the Burleigh Bears and as usual made his presence felt in the match early with a big run to the right of the dummy half on just the second hit up of the match, making thirteen metres. Jack Cullen then backed up to take the 4th hit-up in the same set of six to get Tweed Heads within five metres of the Burleigh line directly in front of the posts.

Jack Cullen continued to make ground throughout the match including a strong 18th minute hit-up when he cut back off his left foot making fifteen metres before the Burleigh defence dragged him down on the halfway line.

Jack Cullen added to his impressive stats in the match with the hit-up in the 25th minute from the kick off to Keano Kini’s ty making thirteen post contact metres to get the Seagulls immediate solid field position.

In the 62nd minute, Jack Cullen made twelve more metres to get Tweed Heads on the attack inside Burleigh’s twenty metre mark and then in the 65th minute and another charge that made ten metres got the Seagulls out of their twenty metre area as the match went from end to end.

Titans contracted Seth Nikotemo started at right second row on Saturday afternoon in the Round Three of the MM Cup in the Gold Coast derby against the Tweed Heads Seagulls.

In the 9th minute of the match, Seth Nikotemo took the Tweed Heads defence by surprise when as he ran at the line from ten metres out on the right side of the field he put in a great chip kick. But for a diving Keano Kini the kick would have resulted in a Burleigh try.

Seth Nikotemo continued his strong contribution in the 11th minute with a bustling run of thirteen minutes which got Burleigh within three metres of Tweed Heads line.

Seth Nikotemo also had a strong match defensively in the local derby and produced an outstanding tackle in the last play of the first half with a great front on hit on Seagulls Keano Kini who close to the Burleigh line looped around behind Thomas Weaver, but Seth Nikotemo read the play and crunched Kini just after he received the ball.

Titans contracted Jaylan De Groot once again started at fullback in Round Three of the MM Cup on Saturday in the Gold Coast local derby against the Burleigh Bears and once again was one of the Seagulls try scorers in their impressive victory.

As has become the norm, Jaylen De Groot and Keano Kini swapped positions on a number of occasions over the course of the match.

Jaylan De Groot’s try came in the 44th minute when Thomas Weaver ran down a short left blind side ten metres out from the line and passed back to his right to put Jaylen De Groot into a yawning gap who was able to bring the ball around to put it down under the posts.

In the 5th minute of the match Jaylen De Groot was well positioned to prevent a Burleigh try when he covered to his left to be on hand to take a short blindside grubber dead in the right corner under heavy pressure from Burleigh chasers.

Jaylan De Groot showed once again in the match that he is always prepared to do the hard work when he got into dummy half and darted to his right, making eighteen metres to get the ball to the halfway mark, breaking two tackles along the way.
