Gold Coast Titans signing Arama Hau played his way into our Langer Trophy Team of the Week after captaining Keebra Park SHS to victory over Marsden SHS in round 3 action.
Hau had a big match with line breaks and one try assist, while defensively he was all over the Marsden pack.

It was like he took the challenge of playing Marsden personally and his inspired performance gives him a high standard to maintain when Langer Trophy action returns on July 12 with round 4 action following the school holidays.

Also shining for Keebra Park SHS was hooker Isaiah ***alilo who controlled the middle expertly, while also finishing with a try assist and his own four pointer.

With his hustle from the ruck, ***alilo also put pressure on the Marsden SHS kickers.

If Hau was the forward of the round, then Wavell SHS No.6 Karl Oloapu the back of round 3 alongside his winger, Tyreece Tait.

Both Broncos boys, they could not have been more impressive in Wavell’s win over Mabel Park.

Oloapu was on fire in the halves with his short and long passing, while his running also challenged the Mabel Park SHS defence.

    Tyreece Tait of Wavell.
He was a cut above any other player on the ground, although his fellow Broncos Academy mate Tait was not far behind with his three try effort down the left wing and strong chase efforts on the kick.

It was a round for outside backs with Taniela Mapusua-Lotaki (Keebra Park) - running for 200m - and Ipswich SHS pair Cayleb Jackson (fullback) and Anton Naiyep (centre) starring alongside PBC SHS fullback ace Keano Kini.

To get the best 13 on the park, we have done some shuffling with Kini in the halves, Naiyep on the wing and Jackson in the centres.

Mabel Park SHS prop Alex Leapai was arguably the prop of the round despite Mabel’s loss to Wavell SHS, while PBC SHS’s Isaiah Scanlan starred and Wavell SHS pair Ben Uini and Damascus Neemia held firm.

Leapai finished with two tries, but also caused Wavell concern with his threat of offloading.

Mapusua-Lotaki did not have it all his own when it came to the dummy half role, with Ipswich SHS’s Tommy Luhrman playing a blinder against Redcliffe and Will Saunders sharp on debut for PBC SHS.

Despite his side being well beaten, Redcliffe SHS edge forward John Fineanganofo won a place in the starting side.

Coombabah SHS also manned the pumps and leading the way was Broncos’ signed edge back rower Lewis Symonds and prop K-ci Whare.

    TEAM OF THE WEEK

After starting at five eight in Round Eight of the NRRRL U18 competition for the Tweed Heads Seagulls against Casino RSM, Creedence Donovan had a huge afternoon scoring a hat trick and setting up another try in a big Seagulls victory.

The first of Creedence Donovan’s tries came in the 30th minute when from ten metres inside Tweed Heads territory Zane Harrison received the ball to the right of the play the ball and immediately charged at the defensive line but that the last moment threw a no look pass back on his inside to Creedence Donovan on the halfway mark with Creedence Donovan racing straight through a gap and proving to be way too quick for the Casino RSM fullback to score seven metres in from the right corner post.

Creedence Donovan scored his second try in the 49th minute when he received the ball to the right of the play the ball from the dummy half five metres out and literally when he looked up there was no one in front of Creedence Donovan so he darted forward to score under the posts.

Creedence Donovan rounded out his hat trick in the 58th minute when he received the ball around forty metres out and just to the right of the uprights. From there Creedence Donovan exploded off the mark and raced through a giant gap and easily and I mean easily rounded the Casino RSM fullback to score five metres to the left of the uprights.

Creedence Donovan showed that he can also set up tries when he recorded a 7th minute try assist when he threw a good short ball to his left to put Zac Windle into a gap with the left second rower charging eighteen metres to score under the posts.

Creedence Donovan also executed a good defensive play in the 48th minute when the Casino RSM right second rower tried to force his way over from close range down a short blindside but Creedence Donovan along with Zane Harrison was on hand to initially hold him up and then force him over the touchline just out from the corner post.

On the weekend for the Bilambil Jets Will Taylor continued at lock in Round Eight of the NRRRL U18 competition against the Lower Clarence Magpies with Will Taylor having a big match scoring two tries and setting up another.

Will Taylor’s opening try came in the 32nd minute when he received the ball in space three passes to the right of the play the ball and thirty five metres out and proved to be far too quick for the Magpies cover defence with Will Taylor diving over to score in the right corner.

Will Taylor scored his second try just four minutes later in the 36th minute when he dived over in the right corner from close range after Bilambil ran the ball down a very short right blindside.

Will Taylor then recorded a try assist in the 45th minute but I will start the description with the play prior. After taking possession to the right of the play the ball thirty five metres from his own line Will Taylor took the ball into the defensive line bumping off the initial defender who had looked to engage Will Taylor front on. From there Will Taylor burst between two more defenders right on halfway before whilst engaged with another got a pass away to his right to five eight Hasley McDonald who was tackled fifteen metres downfield.

Willa Taylor was up off the ground in a heartbeat and ran onto the ball from the Hasley McDonald paly the ball and ran fifteen metres before getting his right arm free in a tackle and found his hooker backing up on his left to dive over to score mis-way between the goal posts and corner post on the right side of the field.

Taniela Mapusua-Lotaki continued at right centre in Round Eleven of the GCRL U18 Division One competition for the Nerang Roostes against the Helensvale Hornets with Taniela Mapusua-Lotaki making Nerang’s fifth hit-up of the match that resulted in Taniela Mapusua-Lotaki making twelve metres from the right of the play the ball.

The 17th minute saw Taniela Mapusua-Lotaki involved in Eren Eden’s opening try. Taniela Mapusua-Lotaki ran onto the ball from around forty metres out and engaged the Eagles defensive line around thirty five metres out and after being spun around so that his back was towards the try line, Taniela Mapusua-Lotaki was able to get his right arm free over his head and off-load to Eren Eden who beat multiple defenders to score.

Taniela Mapusua-Lotaki then made a line break in the 20th minute when after receiving an off-load from Carlos Pauli he cut inside away from the right touchline and whilst Taniela Mapusua-Lotaki only made ten metres, he broke five tackles in that limited space.

Taniela Mapusua-Lotaki made another line break in the 38th minute with his run starting thirty metres out from his own try line with Taniela Mapusua-Lotaki getting on the outside of the Eagles last left sided defender and racing forty metres down the right touchline. As the Eagles cover defence came across Taniela Mapusua-Lotaki cut inside to beat two before running over the top of another defender being finally being stopped after breaking a total of five tackles just twenty metres out from the try line.

Taniela Mapusua-Lotaki made another line break in the 57th minute when from deep inside his own territory Taniela Mapusua-Lotaki once again got around the outside of the Currumbin defence on the right side of the field racing forty metres down the right touchline before cutting inside as the cover defence came across. Around thirty metres out from the try line Taniela Mapusua-Lotaki was spun 360 degrees counter clockwise by an attempted tackle by one of the Eagles cover defenders but maintained his balance and was able to push away from two more defenders before off-loading to his left to Carlos Pauli who had backed up through the centre of the field.

Taniela Mapusua-Lotaki also made a strong effort running with the ball in the 29th minute when from the right of a Roosters scrum win Taniela Mapusua-Lotaki received the ball just five metres out from his own try line but was able to promote the ball to the twenty metre mark.

Zac Windle started at left second row for Tweed Heads in Round Eight of the U18 NRRRL competition against Casino RSM with Zac Windle scoring a double in a big Seagulls victory.

Zac Windle’s opening try came in the 7th minute when from eighteen metres out on the left side of the field Zac Windle burst through the Casino RSM line after a good ball from his inside from Creedence Donovan found him is pace with Zac Windle cutting off his left foot to easily beat the fullback and score comfortably under the posts.

Zac Windle completed his double in the 41st minute when he backed up a long break from Riley Buchanan to receive the ball around thirty metres out and race away to put the ball down under the posts untouched. Zac Windle then made a strong hit-up from the resultant kick-off.

Titans contracted Isaac Matalavea-Booth continued in the front row for the Burleigh Colts side in Round Ten against the Norths Devils with Isaac Matalavea-Booth scoring a key try in the 73rd minute. With Burleigh on the attack around three metres from the line and in front of the posts the hooker darted out of dummy half to his right with Isaac Matalavea-Booth running straight and hard onto the ball as the hooker passed the ball back towards the play the ball. Initially it appeared that the Norths defence was able to hold Isaac Matalavea-Booth up over the line after they had flipped him onto his back but Isaac Matalavea-Booth was able to reach over his left shoulder to get the ball down under the posts in both hands.

Isaac Matalavea-Booth literally could not have been in the match any earlier after taking the opening hit-up of the match from the kick-off and getting the ball out to twenty five metres from his own line.

Isaac Matalavea-Booth executed a smart play in the 21st minute when as Norths were bringing the ball off their own twenty mete line, Isaac Matalavea-Booth engaged one of his opposing front rowers and stole the ball one on one in the centre of the field.

Isaac Matalavea-Booth then did well in the 53rd minute when he along with TJ Devery held up the Norths hooker who had tried to burrow his way over from dummy half from close range.

Interestingly Titans contracted Nicholas Hilton started at halfback for the Nerang Roosters in Round Eleven of the GCRL U18 Division One competition against the Helensvale Hornets operating on the left and to be honest Nicholas Hilton made a very good fist of his new position.

Nicholas Hilton should have had a 22nd minute try assist when whilst operating on the left when he engaged the defensive line and threw a great right arm flick pass which sent his support runner over but bizarrely the touch judge ruled the pass forward.

Nicholas Hilton also threw another great pass in the 36th minute when front the right of a Roosters scrum win around twenty metres from the try line Nicholas Hilton held the ball up perfectly to bring his fullback onto the ball with a great short ball to his right after the fullback had looped around from the opposite side of the field.

Nicholas Hilton showed that he can also defend on the edge of the ruck when in the 35th minute he made a crunching front on tackle on the Eagles interchange hooker (No. 14) driving his right shoulder through the centre of his body mass. Nicholas Hilton backed that up with another crunching front on right shoulder tackle on the Currumbin five eight in the 49th minute.

After heading down to Sydney for the start of the 2022 season Solomon Torrens was back on the Gold Coast in time to start from the bench for the Tweed Heads Seagulls in Round Ten of the Hastings Deering’s Colts competition against the Mackay Cutters with Solomon Torrens coming onto the field in the 31st minute to operate at right second row.

Just a minute later in the 32nd minute Solomon Torrens was involved in Jack Fields try, Kyhan Weir charged onto the ball to the right of the play the ball twenty five metres away from the line with Kyhan Weir then drawing in one defender and off-loading to his right to Solomon Torrens who executed a mart catch and pass to his right to put Jake Fields into space to score near the right corner.

In 2022 Mason Barber is back playing for Keebra Park SHS in the School Boy Walters Cup competition including a strong performance in Round Three against Marsden SHS after starting the match from the bench.

Against Marsden SHS Mason Barber scored the try of the match when after Keebra Park SHS spun the ball to their left from a kick-off, the Keebra Park SHS left winger raced away down the left touchline and as the Marsden SHS cover defence came across he put in a right foot chip kick back inside with Mason Barber retrieving the ball around forty metres out with Mason Barber then racing away to dive over mid-way between the corner post and goal posts on the left side of the field. Mason Barber was unlucky not to have been awarded an eight point try after one of the Marsden SHS cover defenders came in and hit Mason Barber late whilst he was still on the ground after diving over.

After missing the first half of the 2022 Hastings Deering’s Colts competition Reef Sommerville started at right centre for the Tweed Heads Seagulls in Round Nine against the Ipswich Jets.

Reef Sommerville then moved to left centre for Round Ten against the Mackay Cutters with Reef Sommerville scoring his first try of the Colts season in the 52nd minute when received the ball around ten metres out and was able to break through an attempted legs tackle before engaging three defenders just a metre from the try line. As the three defenders tried to force him into touch Reef Sommerville spun counter clockwise and get the ball down four metres in from the left corner post.

After missing time with injury Reef Somerville was named to make his NRRRL First Grade debut in Round Six of the 2022 season for the Cudgen Hornets at right centre against the Evans Head Bombers and celebrated the milestone with a 16th minute try when after receiving the ball around ten metres out wide out on the right Reef Sommerville stepped off his right to create space and then charged over to score under heavy pressure eight metres in from the right corner post.

Kyhan Weir, in Round Ten of the Hastings Deering’s Colts competition for the Tweed Heads Seagulls, made his first Colts career start when he started in the front row in Round Ten against the Mackay Cutters with Kyhan Weir along with Jack Cullen and Ben Liyou involved in the opening tackle of the match.

Kyhan Weir then made a strong run in the 32nd minute when he charged onto the ball to the right of the play the ball twenty five metres away from the line with Kyhan Weir then drawing in one defender and off-loading to his right to Solomon Torrens who then put Jake Fields into space to score near the right corner.

Kyhan Weir got his strong second half underway by making a strong hit-up from the kick-off before making a 41st minute run of fifteen metres through the centre of the field from the left of the play the ball to get the ball forty metres away from his own try line.

Kyhan Weir then added a further strong run in the 43rd minute, once again to the left of the play the ball and through the centre of the field over the forty metre mark.

Titans contracted Riley Buchanan started in the front row for the Tweed Heads Seagulls in Round Eight of the NRRRL U18 competition against Casino RSM taking the fourth hit-up of the match.

Riley Buchanan made a great play in the 41st minute resulting in a line break and try assist for him. From just thirty metres out from his own line, Riley Buchanan ran the ball to the left of the play and ball and broke through two attempted tackles before showing impressive speed to get to the Casino RSM fullback, draw him and off-load to his left to Zac Windle who raced away to score under the posts.

Riley Buchanan had a great match defensively against a much larger Casino RSM forward pack with the first of a number of outstanding tackles that Riley Buchanan executed coming in the 5th minute when he came forward and smashed the Casino RSM front rower (No. 10) with a front on left shoulder hit as the front rower was returning a kick-off.

Then in the 36th minute with Casino RSM on the attack ten metres out and in front of the posts the Casino RSM front rower No. 8 tried to charge over under the posts but Riley Buchanan was having none of that and came forward and drove his right shoulder straight into the chest of his opposite number halting his forward momentum in an instant.
