18 year old PBC student Daniel Butterini started at lock in the 2020 NRRRL First Grade Preliminary Final, with Daniel Butterini scoring a critical try with five minutes remaining to get back into the match that they eventually won against Bilambil on Saturday with a last minute try 20 – 18 to progress into the Grand Final.

Daniel Butterini’s late match try was an outstanding solo affair. With just five minutes to go, Daniel Butterini took a hit-up to the right of the paly the ball, immediately cutting back behind the play the ball and holding off a defender as he ran parralell to the defensive line with his left arm. When he was able to break free of the defender Daniel Butterini stepped off his left foot to get through the Bilambil defensive line and was able to outpace the cover defence to dive over next to the left upright.

In the 2020 NRRRL U18 Preliminary Final on Saturday, former PBC student Josh Bevan started at lock and was close to the best player on the field, scoring a double, one in each half, in a tough 24 – 16 Jets loss.

Josh Bevan’s first half try resulted from a powerful charge from fifteen metres out when he took a hit up off the dummy half to the right of the play the ball to surge through the centre of the Cudgen forward pack to cross ten metres to the left of the uprights.

Josh Bevan’s try in the second half was not dis-similar to his first half try. Josh Bevan once again took a hit-up off the dummy half, this time to the left of the play the ball and once again was too strong for the Cudgen defence to score next to the left upright.

I believe this try was scored off the back of the Referee who’s brother plays for Murwillumbah giving repeated set of 6 restarts and penalties until Bilambil were inevitably scored against through sheer weight of possession.
I wasn’t there though but three sources told me it was a disgrace.

Titans linked Zane Harrison was a deserved Player of the Match in the Group 18 U14 Grand Final a fortnight ago after a three try assist and a long range solo try performance.

Zane Harrison’s first try assist came early in the first half when he threw a long cut-out pass to his left right onto the chest of left winger Creedence Donovan who dived over out wide. Zane Harrison’s second try assist came on the same side of the field when he took the ball right into the line before sending a pass to his left to put his left centre over.

Zane Harrison’s final try assist of the Grand Final came late in the match when once again he threw a perfectly weighted pass to Creedence Donovan who ran twenty metres to score near the left corner. Whilst all three of Zane Harrison’s try assist’s came when he was playing on the left, Zane Harrison also had some good moments whilst operating on the right (Zane Harrison literally moves from side to side to identify the best opportunity) including a great short ball early in the match to his right second rower who almost scored from twenty metres out. Zane Harrison set up a try on the opposite side of the field two play the ball later.

Zane Harrison put an exclamation mark on the Grand Final with a ninety five metre solo effort. Off a Tweed Heads scrum win ten metres out from their onw line, Zane Harrison received the ball on the right side of the field, two passes off the scrum win, producing a great show and go to beat the Tugun defensive line and simply proved too quick for the cover defence running ninety five metres to score.

In 2020 Titans contracted EJ Finau moved back to play for Logan Brothers in the GBJRL U16 Division One competition, after a season with Redcliffe, scoring an incredible six tries is his first match back in Logan’s Green and Yellow against Redlands at Logan Brothers home ground at Civic Park.

In fact it could have been seven but the touch judge ruled that EJ Finau had gone into touch when he dive over in the left corner in the second half, I must admit that it looked like EJ Finau had gotten the ball down before he went into touch, but six tries in a match is one heck of an effort.

EJ Finau spent time in the match, at both left centre and in the second row. EJ FInau’s first try of the match came when he followed through a grubber kick towards the right corner post to get to the ball first. EJ Finau’s second try came when he was operating at left centre, receiving the ball twelve metres out at the dressing room end of Civic Park and with a right foot step got on the outside of his immediate defender and beat another with pace to dive over in the left corner.

Whilst EJ Finau’s first half was impressive with two tries, his four try second half was even better and started when once again he was first through to dive on a Logan Brothers grubber kick, this time to the left side of the field. EJ Finau added a fourth try when ran out of dummy half to the left of the play the ball, diving over with four defenders trying in vain to stop him.

EJ Finau’s fifth try came when he cut underneath his play maker, cutting back behind the play the ball barging over after a ten metres run carrying two defenders with him. EJ Finau’s sixth and final try of the match came on the left side of the field once again, when he received the ball two passes off the play the ball, immediately cutting to the outside around three Redlands defenders to score five metres in from the left corner post.

Titans contracted Thomas Weaver was easily the best player on the field last Saturday as Cudgen booked a place in the NRRRL U18 Green Grand Final scoring a double, kicking three conversions, a critical forty metre penalty goal and forcing two line drop outs in a 24 – 16 Preliminary Final win over the Bilambil Jets.

Thomas Weaver’s first try of the match came when he ran out of dummy half, running at a 45 degree angle at the line with the ball out in front of his body in two hands and shaped to pass before sliding through the defensive line to score.

Thomas Weaver received a long pass out of dummy half to score his second try. Once he received the ball from the dummy half Thomas Weaver immediately straightened up his run to slip through the Bilambil line that was sliding across the field to score adjacent to the left upright.
