Giant Nerang Roosters and Keebra Park front rower Deniro Seumanutafa had a huge season in the GCRL U15 Division One competition this season culminating in a Grand Final hat trick as the Roosters defeated Runaway Bay 26 – 22 in a high quality forward battle.

Over the course of the 2019 GCRL U15 Division One competition Deniro Seumanutafa scored thirteen tries from eleven matches (118% strike rate) to finish as the competitions leading try scorer.

In addition to his Grand Final hat trick he scored doubles against Ormeau in Round One and Runaway Bay in Round Three. Later in the season in consecutive matches in June Deniro Seumanutafa added doubles against Helensvale and Runaway Bay with his remaining two tries coming in matches against Ormeau and Runaway Bay.

In 2018, his first on the Gold Coast Deniro Seumanutafa scored twelve tries from fourteen matches including a mid-season hat trick against Ormeau. He finished the 2018 season on a roll scoring in each of his last five matches, starting that span with a double against Burleigh and then added tries in matches against Mudgeeraba, Coomera, Ormeau and Coomera once again this time in the U14 Division One Finals series.

Earlier in the season he scored a double against Beaudesert for his first tries on the Gold Coast and then followed that up a week later by scoring against Burleigh.

Deniro Seumanutafa’s older brother is with the Bulldogs but with our new association with Keebra Park maybe just maybe players like Deniro Seumanutafa will line up for the Titans be coming seasons

One of the most elusive players in the Gold Coast junior rugby league competition this season was Ormeau Shearers fullback Nayte Saaga, which is understandable considering the Keebra Park student was selected in the 2019 Oz Tag High Performance Academy.

For the Cutters in the GCRL U13 Division One competition, Nayte Saaga scored an impressive 11 tries from 15 appearances. He also kicked six goals to finish the season with 56 points.

Nayte Saaga scored doubles against Runaway Bay and Burleigh with his remaining seven tries coming in individual matches against Nerang, Southport, Currumbin twice, Runaway Bay and Burleigh.

With the boot his best performance was against Burleigh in the Preliminary Final when he kicked three goals.

Strike centres are difficult to find but one young player who in the early stages of his career looks promising is Ormeau’s Pakileata Vakavelo.

For the Shearers in the 2019 GCRL U13 Division One competition Pakileata Vakavelo played in 13 matches finishing with 11 tries including a double in their Preliminary final loss to Burleigh.

In addition to that double he also scored doubles against Southport and Currumbin with those doubles coming in consecutive rounds in May.

He also scored in individual matches against Coomera, Runaway Bay, Southport and Burleigh in Week One of the Finals.

Did anyone see the news last night (can't find an article online). I was in the doctors surgery so it had subtitles on that did and didn't make sense. From what I could gather, did we just secure sponsorship for the TEDS program for a couple of years?

As part of the new partnership, Westfund will also be the Presenting Partner of the Junior Titans System (JTS) – the successful development program that delivers a pathway for junior rugby league players in the Gold Coast and Northern Rivers region to reach the NRL.

Formerly known as the Titans Elite Development System, the new Westfund JTS program will ensure the best local juniors remain in the Titans’ system, and can realise their dreams of playing in the NRL without moving away from crucial the support networks of family and friends.

Westfund Health Insurance is a regional, not-for-profit health fund with locations across New South Wales and Queensland who recently won the QLD Canstar Award for Outstanding Value in their Hospital and packaged products. Westfund were also awarded the 2020 Product Review Award for Health Insurance, with a 4.6 star rating.

Westfund Chief Executive Officer Matt Banning said the Titans’ dedication to their community, the Club’s values system and focus on future success mirrored those of Westfund, making an official partnership with the Gold Coast NRL Club a logical decision.

“The opportunity to join the Titans as the Presenting Partner of the Junior Titans System, and to support the terrific work of their community programs, reflects our own commitment to improving the lives of people living in regional cities and towns throughout Australia,” Mr Banning said.

“Westfund is a not-for-profit health fund that, like the Titans, does everything we can to benefit our members.

“The Titans operate under a values system governed by characteristics like honesty, integrity, respect and trust and, like Westfund, are driven by the desire for continued growth until they reach the goal of being the best.

“We are very proud to be a partner of the Gold Coast Titans for the next two years, and look forward to sharing our journeys together to benefit the Gold Coast and Northern Rivers community.”

Titans Chief Executive Officer Steve Mitchell said the Westfund partnership was a reflection of the Club’s growth over the past 18 months, and a reward for the successes of the Titans Community Foundation.

“The Titans exist to be more than a football Club. We are here to serve our community and support the people who support us,” Mr Mitchell said.

“The Titans and Westfund share similar ambitions in achieving success in their specific fields, but never losing sight of the people we represent.

“The incredible success of the Titans Community Foundation in delivering results in areas like social change, inclusion and participation and indigenous education are proof of the values that are at the heart of this Club.

“We welcome Westfund as true partners of the Titans who share our vision and values.”

Slam-dunking basketball prospect Jahream Bula signs with Titans

The Gold Coast Titans search to recruit the region’s top athletic talent has landed the signing of high-flying basketball convert Jahream Bula.

The 17-year-old Keebra Park student was spotted after just two games for the renowned nursery’s top rugby league side in 2019 after a season spent mostly in the B team.

Sports science testing has revealed the former basketballer is already one of the most explosive athletes at the Titans, leading all players in the broad jump, which most directly translates to acceleration and power.

The evidence to support that can be heard as well as seen because the 185cm outside back can slam down goalpost-rattling dunks on the crossbar with ease.

Transferring those aerial abilities onto the rugby league field will take time but the former B-teamer’s raw athletic potential excites coaches.

“I’ve never been able to posterise someone (the basketball equivalent of a speccy) on the field yet but hopefully I can get it soon,” the 185cm outside back said.

“Basketball has really helped my rugby league, with the jumping and catching and footwork.

“Basketballers need good court vision and I find that helps me read defences too.”

Junior Titans System coach Jamie McCormack said Bula’s athletic base and size at just 17 years of age bode well for future success.

“Sometimes when we do junior recruitment and talent scouting it’s great to keep an eye out for genuine athletes,” he said.

“Whatever skills they may be deficient in, that’s our job to make sure they improve.

“Jahream is just an athlete – for an outside back coming from a basketball background, the ability to jump high in the air and catch balls above his head (is helpful).

“His athletic ability and power base to get high off the ground gets him into try-scoring situations.”

Bula will return to Keebra Park in 2020 for his final year of high school.
