KIMMORLEY'S NRL TEAM OF THE YEAR
By Brett Kimmorley FOX SPORTS August 31, 2012 11:50AM

With the Dally M awards looming large on the NRL calendar, Fox Sports rugby league expert Brett Kimmorley nominates the best players in the competition in each position.

It's been one of the biggest years ever for the NRL, with massive crowds and a record TV rights deal, but the action on the field has defintiely been the highlight.

Here, Noddy nominates the players that have lit the competition alight more than anyone else this season, as well as the coach of the year and rookie of the year.

Kimmorley also gives us his tip on who will take home the Dally M Medal on rugby league's night of nights.
    Fullback: Ben Barba (Canturbury-Bankstown Bulldogs)

I just think he’s been consistently great all year. He’s been great on kick returns, scored some freakish tries and has the ability as a good fullback to hold some players up over the line and do some good try line saves.

    Winger: Josh Mansour (Penrith Panthers)

The amount of metres he makes on every carry is outstanding. He’s defensively very strong, and he can also play a couple of different positions. He’s been a real find for Penrith.

Centre: Jamie Lyon (Manly Sea Eagles)

Defensively he’s outstanding - he’s a very hard man to get past. That right edge for Manly has scored some brilliant tries off the back of what he’s been able to create with some one-on-one freakishness.

Five-eighth Johnathan Thurston (North Queensland Cowboys)

He still has as much class in the game, even though his touches of the ball are down a little bit. His combination with Matt Bowen is back to its best, and they’re certainly proven very dangerous. His ability to make a play or win a game has probably been more prevalent than ever this year.

    Halfback: Cooper Cronk (Melbourne Storm)

He possesses an outstanding kicking game, and the structure comes off him at Melbourne Storm. He’s also kicked some big-pressure field goals this year. If we talk about anyone in the NRL being Mr Consistent, it’s him.

    Lock: Paul Gallen (Cronulla Sharks)

Obviously the amount of metres he gets per game is phenomenal. He’s an inspiration for Cronulla. He comes up with big plays generally at the most important times, and he’s so tough in defence as well.

Second row: Frank Pritchard (Canterbury-Bankstown Bulldogs)

He played a lot more minutes on the football field this year, featuring in nearly every game. He caused havoc on the left edge for the Bulldogs, who have obviously got a lot of tries this year. Defensively he’s been very, very physical.

    Prop: James Graham (Canterbury-Bankstown Bulldogs)

His ball-playing ability, his toughness, and how he’s been able to come to Australia and handle the pace of the game has been outstanding. To be now saying how great an import he’s been after just one season is amazing. Even the Vaseline being removed didn’t throw him off his game!

    Hooker: Cameron Smith (Melbourne Storm)

Just class. He never makes a wrong decision, doesn’t throw a bad pass. He defends and tightens that ruck up so well for the Storm in the middle of the field. When they defend well as a team it’s because he’s making 40-plus tackles and controlling that ruck.

Coach: Michael Maguire (South Sydney Rabbitohs)

To have got South Sydney to where they are in the competition, he’s creating a name for himself as one of the elite coaches in the NRL, and he’s done it in a very short time. He’s done a wonderful job in getting the best - and consistency - out of that group of players.

Rookie of the year: Adam Reynolds (South Sydney Rabbitohs)

He’s got this award because the coach has a bit of belief, and structure, and has allowed this young kid to develop his football game. Adam Reynolds is the closest thing I’ve seen to Cooper Cronk - I think he’s a mini-version of Cooper Cronk. You can see a lot of resemblance. It’s been a wonderful first year, and he’s shown a lot of maturity.

Noddy's tip for the Dally M: Ben Barba

He’s scored a lot of three-point matches this year. His closest rival would have been Greg Inglis, who’s been robbed of a few points through suspension. Barba had a freakish and exciting year of football, and the fans have loved watching him. He’s been brilliant and a breath of fresh air for the crowd

Josh Mansour is a weird decision. Sure he has been good but there have been better wingers such as Morris, Uate, Sio and many others.
Prince and Sezer in the halves.

I haven't really watched Mansour at all throughout the year but watched him last night against the Broncos. He was close to MOM (certainly IMO performed better that Wallace). He was in everything and as Kimmorley says, he makes metres everytime he handles the ball....Mind you it is the first time I have watched him so maybe he had a one off standout game on a losing side.
