Default Tomkins joins NRL Warriors for record fee

English rugby league star Sam Tomkins is on his way to the Warriors after what is believed to be a world record transfer fee.

The Warriors have paid Wigan a transfer fee thought to be about STG700,000 ($A1.20 million) for a three-year deal, the two teams announced overnight.

It is thought the 24-year-old fullback will be the highest-paid English player in the game with a salary near STG400,000 ($A685,000).

As part of the deal with the Warriors, Wigan have secured the right to re-sign Tomkins when he completes his commitments in Auckland and the player says he has no intention of playing for another Super League club.

Tomkins is considered one of the premier attacking players in the game, boasting a remarkable 144 tries in 150 appearances for Wigan.

He said the time was right to make a move to the NRL, joining the likes of South Sydney's Sam Burgess and Canterbury prop James Graham as current England internationals to have made the switch.

"It's something I'm glad to get out," said Tomkins, who has been rumoured to be heading to the Warriors for months.

"For me this is about taking another step up in my career by testing myself in the NRL. It has always been a goal of mine and now it's going to happen."

Tomkins said he spoke to a few NRL clubs but the Warriors struck him as a club that had a lot of similarities to Wigan.

Warriors coach Matthew Elliott said Tomkins would be a huge boost to the team.

"Sam's an exciting addition to our squad, a world-class player who supports the direction we want to go in with this club," he said.

Wigan coach Shaun Wane expects Tomkins to be a big hit in the NRL.

"New Zealand Warriors have got a great player and a real good guy off the field. He's very honest and forthright with his views. He'll drive the culture over there and they will benefit from having Sam Tomkins in their team," he said.

Wigan have signed North Queensland Cowboys fullback Matt Bowen, 31, as a straight replacement on a 12-month contract, with an option for a second season, depending on how he copes with a long-standing knee injury.

Great signing by the Warriors, possibly the best fullback in the game today.

Of course, I expect his strike rate will drop, but if you want to test yourself you do it in the best competition, so good on him. Time to see just how good he is.

Well said, Steve. What you mention has been what I've been thinking all along since the topic of Tompkins to NRL first arose. I guess we're finally going to see how it pans out for him.

Big big signing by the Warriors, wow.

I hope he is leading try scorer just to stick it up his doubters.

    Great for international footy too!

Knights nab Packer on four-year NRL deal

    AAP
    10:29am Wed 02nd October, 2013

Warriors and Test prop Russell Packer is headed to Newcastle next season after penning a four-year deal with the NRL club.

The 23-year-old was released from the final year of his contract at the Warriors, with whom he made his NRL debut in 2008.

Packer has played 110 games for the Auckland-based club and two Tests for the Kiwis.

"I thoroughly enjoyed my time at the Warriors since joining the club in 2007 but to have the opportunity to play at the Knights and to be coached by Wayne Bennett is special," said Packer, who will relocate to Newcastle with his young family ahead of pre-season training in November.

"I look forward to joining the Knights in the pre-season and assisting the Knights premiership ambitions."

Newcastle chief executive Matt Gidley said Packer will add plenty of power to an already solid Knights pack.

"Russell is a young Kiwi international and will compliment our current front row stocks," he said.

"His addition to our squad will also bring further confidence to the team."

Williams still unsure about Manly future
    By Ian McCullough
    AAP
    6:16pm Wed 02nd October, 2013

Sea Eagle David Williams scores a brilliant try against the Rabbitohs
Last Friday David Williams scored one of the best tries of the season against South Sydney to help Manly into the NRL grand final, but Sunday's clash with the Sydney Roosters could be his last for the club.

The 27-year-old winger has put his injury nightmares behind him to take his tally for the year to a career-best 20.

But more significantly is the fact he's made 26 appearances - the most since the 2008 when he helped Manly win the premiership.

However, contract negotiations to secure his long-term future are still not resolved despite the club claiming two months ago an agreement was imminent.

"It's still work in progress and it's a bit of a pain in the **** that it's taken this long, but that's rugby league and that's business," Williams said.

"At the moment they are all still talking about it. I have stated before that I'd love to stay here and finish as a one-club man but that may not be.

"(Brent) Kitey thought he see his career out here and he's off to Penrith so who knows."

Williams credits his form and ability to steer clear of the physio's room down to his raw meat diet.

Coming to the end of his contract and being tagged with the label 'injury-prone' he said he'd no option but to look outside of the square for an answer.

"My back was against the wall, I hadn't played more than 15 games in the last four seasons," he said.

"What's the worst that could happen? I end up back on the sidelines again?

"When someone comes to you with an answer that seems logical it seemed obvious to take it.

"I am very glad that didn't dismiss it straight away."

Williams' strict diet means socialising is awkward especially when it comes to restaurants preferring to serve their food cooked but he said the sacrifice has been worth it.

"It was a shock at first I mean who eats bloody raw food?," he said.

"I used to walk into a butcher and say 'can you cut it up I am going to eat it now'.

"Buy once you get through the shock of it at first and start to see the benefits it's all happy days.

"And because you want to feel that way you will eat that sort of stuff."

Having missed the grand final win over the Warriors in 2011 with a fractured vertebrae sustained against Melbourne earlier that season, Williams said he's relishing the chance to pick up a second premiership ring and is a better player than five years ago.

"The last four years have definitely not been a nice position to be in when you're not contributing to the team," he said.

"You feel (on grand final day) you're not part of it because you are not there at the end.

"It's nice to be on the other side of the fence for a change."

"I was definitely riding a wave in 08. This year not so much with my training regime and my lifestyle. I am definitely putting a lot more into it.

"I like to think that is down to hard work ... but I still have a step to go and I am definitely better than `08."

Broncos sign NRL trio for 2014
    By James MacSmith
    AAP
    1:32pm Tue 15th October, 2013

Brisbane have added a trio of signings to their NRL squad in a bid to add depth to the side after a bitterly disappointing 2013 season.

The Broncos announced the recruitment on Tuesday of veteran back-rower Todd Lowrie from the Warriors, utility Daniel Vidot from St George Illawarra and centre Stewart Mills from Cronulla.

The 30-year-old Lowrie, a 2012 premiership winner with Melbourne, was released by the Warriors last week on compassionate grounds and joins Brisbane on a two-year deal.

Vidot, 23, struggled for consistent form during the Dragons' forgettable season and also moves north for the next two NRL seasons.

Mills, 21, played just five NRL games for the Sharks this year but was a key figure in their NSW Cup premiership triumph and joins the Broncos on a one-year contract.

The trio joins Canterbury's Ben Barba and Sydney Roosters prop Martin Kennedy in an offseason move to Red Hill as coach Anthony Griffin attempts to rebuild from a season in which the Broncos missed the finals for just the second time in 21 years.

"They all add some depth to our playing roster. Todd in particular has got a lot of experience, including being part of a grand final winning team with the Melbourne Storm," Griffin said.

"He's played 184 games so he's got a wealth of experience and he'll really add to the strength of our pack."

Griffin said Vidot still has his best football in front of him.

"He was part of the Queensland Emerging Origin squad a couple of seasons ago," he said.

"He can cover a lot of positions centre, wing and back-row, and he's 108 kilos so he's a big boy and still only 23 years old.

"It's the same with Stewart Mills ... he covers a lot of positions from centre, wing to fullback and will add to the depth of our outside backs.

"We've really looked to build quality depth within our squad and reinforce our outside backs."

    Arthur named new Eels coach

    NRL.com
    12:11pm Wed 16th October, 2013

Brad Arthur has officially been announced as the new coach of the Parramatta Eels.

Arthur, a former assistant coach with the Eels, had been working as an assistant under Geoff Toovey with the Manly Sea Eagles in 2013.

The local Parramatta junior said the role was an honour.

"To return as a head coach in an area and a club where I played football as a young man is extremely humbling and very exciting," Arthur said.

"I have full confidence in the playing roster for next year, as well as the people at the Parramatta Eels to get this club moving in the right direction."

Arthur's appointment ends speculation Roosters assistant coach Jason Taylor was destined to return to the Eels' fold as head mentor from 2014.

Read the official Eels announcement here.
