Jillaroos assistant coach impressed by Broncos Schoolgirls
The opportunity to participate in the inaugural Broncos Schoolgirls Challenge attracted 43 teams and 500 girls from South East Queensland and beyond. This event is the first of its kind and required plenty of stamina and skills from the participants who played rugby league in a 9-a-side round robin format. Broncos Game Development Manager and Jillaroos Assistant Coach Paul Dyer is continually impressed by the skill level and commitment of females in rugby league, ?The raw talent of the girls matched with their commitment is second to none. The girls are a pleasure to work with and deserve this opportunity to play rugby league in a marquee carnival. The Brisbane Broncos are proud to be associated with such an event.?
Redcliffe Dolphins will play host to the carnival which has attracted teams from areas as widespread as Bundaberg, Rockhampton, Oakey, the Burnett Region, Gold Coast and Hervey Bay. The Broncos Schoolgirl Challenge also gave girls the opportunity to register as an individual player and participate in a Barbarians team. All of the 500 participants received a football and t-shirt at the carnival.
Champion Teams included;
Under 12?s Sharks Barbarians team & Hervey Bay
Under 14?s Currumbin Barbarians
Under 16?s Merrimac SHS & Wavell SHS
Opens Caboolture SHS & Currumbin Barbarians
This event was the first of many under the direction of ARL Development?s Female Participation Development Officer Jo Breakspear, ?This is the largest schoolgirls carnival in Australia. The interest from schools has been overwhelming with the carnival at capacity in its first year. The Barbarians concept has also been a great drawcard for individual players.?
The event was hosted by ARL Development and was supported by the Brisbane Broncos, Queensland Rugby League, South East Queensland Division and Redcliffe Dolphins. Returning from a successful tour of Samoa, Australian Women?s Rugby League Jillaroos representatives Renae Kunst and Tegan Rolfe as well as QLD & Australian Captain Karyn Murphy were in attendance to assist in coaching the Barbarians teams and selecting a merit team from each of the Divisions.
