Great work by Tweed to win 10 - 4 in a mud bath. Tweed have now won more games in a season than any Qld Cup team.

    Seagulls Fend Off Latest Challenge
    QRL Media

IN an amazing season, the Tweed Heads Seagulls have handled everything that has been thrown at them in 2011.

But nothing could have prepared the Seagulls for the conditions they faced against the Redcliffe Dolphins in Saturday?s round 21 clash at Piggabeen.

Heavy rain turned the field into a mud bath but it was the Seagulls who emerged from the atrocious conditions with another gritty victory.

To be fair though, the Dolphins were equally dogged and showed enough determination to win the game themselves.

After emerging from the scoreless first half, the Dolphins took a 2-0 lead with an early penalty goal to Liam Georgetown.

Tweed responded with a try to James Wood, who showed all the skills of an English Premier League soccer player when he chased through a Brad Davis grubber kick and toed the ball through a puddle of water to score.

Redcliffe wouldn?t go away though, and soon levelled proceedings at 4-4 with another Georgetown penalty goal.

The Dolphins then had numerous opportunities to put more points on but the Seagulls held firm.

When it was their turn to attack after receiving the ball in dubious circumstances, the Tweed cashed in through Ryan Simpkins who ran onto a lovely short pass from Cody Nelson.

Those telling few minutes showed just why the Seagulls are the short-priced favourites to win this year?s competition.

Simply put, when a game is in the balance, this team finds that little bit extra to get across the line and win.

Tweed coach Ben Anderson was again glowing in the assessment of his players, some of whom will need a good few days to recover from the slugfest.

Anderson will be hoping for a much firmer playing surface when the Tweed travels to Barlow Park on Friday night for a showdown with the Northern Pride.

Seagulls break records on way to finals

THE winning run for the Tweed Heads Seagulls continues, the side notching a 10-4 Queensland Cup triumph over the Redcliffe Dolphins in a Piggabeen Oval mud-bath yesterday.

The victory marks their 20th of the season, the most by a side in the regular season of the competition.

But the side's not getting lax, with a tough ride into the finals -- including this weekend's final round against defending premiers the Northern Pride.

They then face the Dolphins, Pride or Souths Logan Magpies, who are locked in a battle for second, in their opening week semi-final.

While Tweed was celebrating the Burleigh Bears were left to rue another season that slipped from their grasp when their slim finals hopes came crashing down with a 10-6 loss to the Easts Tigers.
