    Comets See Off Burleigh Rally
    QRL Media

THE Central Comets have survived a late rally from a desperate Burleigh Bears outfit to clinch their seventh win of the Intrust Super Cup season.

The final result was in the balance right up until the final siren when the Bears had a chance to level the score with a sideline conversion.

However, Burleigh missed the difficult kick, allowing the Comets to hang on for a 22-20 victory in front of their home fans at Browne Park.

?It?s good to get back-to-back wins, and just play a bit of good footy,? said Comets skipper Guy Williams.

?We?ve always had it in us. It was our first day game at home this year and I think most of the boys enjoyed it.?

While the Comets were celebrating their good fortune, the Bears were left to lament a missed opportunity.

Burleigh would have climbed back into sixth spot with a win, but Paul Bramley?s team is now languishing in eighth and is in dire need of a confidence-boosting victory over Wynnum Manly this weekend.

The Bears led 10-6 at half-time but were soon on the back foot in the second half as the Comets skipped out to a decisive 22-10 lead on the back of a fine double from prop Tim Glasby.

Burleigh?s Jamie Dowling almost singlehandedly kept the visitors in the contest by completing a stunning hat-trick in the second half.

But it was to no avail as the Bears crashed to their fourth-straight defeat.

For the Comets, tough back-rower Tyron Haynes collected the players? players award.

?He?s a machine. He would have made at least 50 tackles,? Williams said.

?He was just very good in defence, and Tim Glasby came up with a couple of good plays for us.?

Although disappointed not to come away with the win, Burleigh's Nick Parfitt had reason to celebrate after crossing for a try against the Comets.

Parfitt is now the leading try-scorer in the history of the Queensland Cup with 113, one clear of former Redcliffe, Central and Easts flyer Ryan Cullen.
