Default QCUP Round 18: Burleigh Bears vs Tweed Heads Seagulls

    Tweed's winning streak continues

THE Tweed Heads Seagulls have sewn up the minor premiership and continued their unbeaten run with a 16-10 win over Burleigh Bears in today's Intrust Super Cup.

The win takes the competition leaders to 18 unbeaten games this season, but despite securing the minor premiership Seagulls coach Ben Anderson said there was only one premiership that mattered.

"Minor premierships are nice but we want to be there in the end... that's what I care about," Anderson said.

The loss means Burleigh -- who sit one point outside the top six -- will be fighting for its survival over the closing month.

    Tweed Wins Fiery Local Derby

TWEED Heads coach Ben Anderson heaped praise on skipper Brad Davis after the Seagulls withstood a fierce barrage from the Burleigh Bears yesterday to maintain their unbeaten record in this year’s Intrust Super Cup.

Davis was in everything as the Seagulls won an explosive local derby 16-10 in front of a vocal crowd at Pizzey Park.

“He just played tough,” Anderson said of Davis.

“He’s one of those players who has a reputation and teams really target him and come after him.

“But he’s as tough as they come. It seems to bring the best out of him.”

In a fiery encounter, the Seagulls led 10-4 at half-time and pulled further in front after the break.

Burleigh scored a converted try with eight minutes to go to set up a cracking finish.

However, the Bears couldn’t reel in the deficit, and have now slipped to eighth on the ladder with four rounds remaining.

While Burleigh will now need to win at least three of its remaining four matches to be a chance of qualifying for the finals, the Tweed will enter its round 19 clash against the Sunshine Coast with the minor premiership locked away.

Anderson was delighted with the way his players responded under pressure yesterday.

“We knew it would be like a finals game really,” he said.

“They really tried to play physical and aggressive against us. But we handled it pretty well.”

Referee Justin Davis had his hands full for the 80 minutes and sin-binned Robert Apanui (Burleigh) and Ryan Simpkins (Tweed) early in the first half after an altercation.

Tweed lost star hooker Kayne Lawton (ribs) in the first half in a blow that put further pressure on the Seagulls.

“Tim Maccan came on and did a great job at (No.) nine,” Anderson said.

“We probably looked the most dangerous side in attack to be honest. But they kept coming at us.”

Anderson said Lawton could miss next weekend’s clash with the Sunshine Coast, while forward Rod Griffin (hand) is also in doubt.

Lawton came back on in the second half and got smashed again. Me thinks he should have stayed off after the first 'smash'.
