I got a bit of a scare this morning with my women's tip Lindsay Davenport winning through to the third round in a so-so performance.

    Lindsay given a workout
    By Andy Withers
    January 18, 2006

LINDSAY Davenport, the women's top seed, has progressed to round three of the Australian Open, but only after being made to work harder than expected by Karolina Sprem.

The American won 7-6 (7-4) 6-3 in 85 minutes, but her performance was anything but that of a world No.1.

Davenport failed to impose herself on Sprem, the world No.66 from Croatia, and the match was all but decided by the protagonists' respective serves.

The 2000 Open champion out-aced her rival, 6-3, while Sprem coughed up nine double faults compared with Davenport's three.

Davenport next faces either Galina Voskoboeva or No.25 seed Maria Kirilenko, both of whom hail from Russia.

    FOX SPORTS
Funny that Hewitt's victory is lauded in positives winning in five sets yet Davenport's two set win is labelled "ut her performance was anything but that of a world No.1". Ok, so it wasn't, though a win is a win in the and she ain't going to win the tournament in the first week.

It is Australia Day today at the Open

Well done to Samantha Stosur defeating World Number 21 Ana Ivanovic 6-3, 7-5

Sam played a match that totally made Ana, who is a fighter and determined, at times very worried and rustled, and showed why we may have a new Australian Tennis superstar.. and that is coming from me, someone who is a huge fan of Ana Ivanovic and who believes she will be world Number 1 one day..

GO Peter Luczak who won against Oliver Rochus 6-7 6-4 6-1 6-7 6-1..

Luczak had Rochus lost throughout many stages of that game and was very precise in his shots, he looked good and with all the crowd behind him he got through..

Finally Nathan Healey is playing Amer Delic 6-4 6-7 6-3 0-1 ATM

Nathan has played couragously and it has been a great game.. I think he can do it and make it 3/3 for Australia

and of course Lleyton plays tonight against Juan.. may Australia day continue to come early and GO AUSSIE GO..

Lleyton Hewitt will be lucky to make the 3rd round - he is being totally outclassed by his opponent tonight.

Hewitt is in deep trouble, even if he can get out of this set, I don;t see him winning the 4th...

That's true Deegan - you can't ever write him off though!

Here comes a set to Hewitt - can he win another in 5?

Hewitt goorrne - I said earlier in the thread that "if Lleyton makes it to the final 16 it will be a great effort" as his lead up form was poor.

We still have 3 Aussies flying the flag, all is not lost

    How are you tips going?

Andy Roddick looks sensational and the only mens player that looks a threat to Roger Federer who is cantering through the first week.

Lindsay Davenport is still there though she is doing it tougher than other leading players. I am not going to steer away from her as my tip though the 'Swiss Miss' could be the player that slips under everyone's radar.

As for the match I am looking forward to it.. but won't be here to see it.. have to go out tonight.. I am sure it will be a good match though.. and All the best of luck to Daniela... she is so determined and smarter this time around.. I think she can trouble Maria and may just win this one..

GTD - you really no how to pick em'

First it was death riding Australia in the cricket when they were 6 wickets down and now you have "always thought" that Martina Hingis would win the open now she has safely navigated her way to the quarters

After the first set of the women's final, can you give me your tip?

What about the cricket tonight? Sri Lanka the goods?
