Ipswich Club Calls For Support

NORTHS Rugby League Club in Ipswich is in danger of closing if vital funds aren?t raised to help keep the organisation?s doors open.

Norths were one of the many regional sporting clubs devastated in the January floods.

The club, around since the 1920s, has received generous support, funding and donations in the wake of the floods. However, Norths have been battling for survival since.

?We are back up and running, but our fields are still closed due to sink holes, and we aren?t getting the amount of traffic into the club that we would normally have,? Norths Leagues Club treasurer David Haug said.

?Our local rugby league games have been moved to Briggs Road so we are suffering the financial effects of that.?

Haug said Council had been working hard to get the fields restored. ?But it will be January at the earliest before they will be ready,? he said.

?That means we will have missed two cricket seasons and one rugby league season.

?Half of Norths income is generated from junior and senior games of rugby league and cricket, so the club has been dealt a huge financial blow.?

The club has been totally rebuilt and refurbished and is open for business seven days a week, with restaurant meals from Wednesday to Friday.

The club?s regular Blues Jam is back on the first and third Sundays of the month from 2pm.

The club is also struggling to get its annual Norths Juniors Ball off the ground. The ball has been a club tradition for the past 30 years.

Haug said it would go ahead as scheduled on Saturday at Banjos from 6pm.

All past and present members are encouraged to reignite their club pride and support the ball.

?This is a great event for Norths and the general community,? Haug said.

?In the past this has been a great fundraising event for the club, and this year more than ever it will need to raise some money or we face an uncertain future.?
