Tweed shows class with huge win

TWEED Heads won the "Battle of the Seagulls" in emphatic fashion yesterday with a resounding 48-8 win over Wynnum Manly.

It was always going to be a tough road trip to Piggabeen for the Wynnum Manly side, with their opponents unbeaten this season.

But with Wynnum coming off a recent run of top form that included a huge win over Norths the previous week, an upset was on the cards.

Tweed was quick to put talk of an upset to bed though, and with skipper Brad Davis directing the plays to perfection, Tweed went on to record their biggest win of the season, with a nine tries to two performance that further strengthened their status as premiership favourites.

After the game, coach Ben Anderson told the Gold Coast Bulletin he was especially happy with the result.

"It was pleasing because we haven't put a side like that away yet," said Anderson, whose side led 26-4 at half-time.

Before the game, Tweed seemed slightly vulnerable after star hooker Kayne Lawton was hit with a two match suspension.

However, the home side took it all in their stride, with Anderson taking Lawton's absence as an opportunity to include Nathan Mossman, who has been playing well for the Seagulls in the Bycroft Cup (Gold Coast Rugby League).

The Seagulls also welcomed back prolific try-scorer Nat Barnes after six weeks out with an ankle injury.

Barnes picked up straight where he left off scoring two tries to move to third on the ISC leading try scorers ladder with 13.

Tweed Heads will next week travel to Langlands Park to take on the Easts Tigers in the first week of the round 17 split round, while Wynnum Manly will have the week off before preparing for the July 31 home clash against the Central Comets.

TWEED HEADS SEAGULLS 48 (Nathanael Barnes 2, Rod Griffin 2, Ryan Simpkins 2, Dominique Peyroux, Tom Merritt, Will Matthews tries; Brad Davis 6 goals) def WYNNUM MANLY SEAGULLS 8 (Jason Moon, Luke Dalziel-Don tries) at Piggabeen Sports.
