Matai will be a bloody tough test for Tomane, he is up there with the best of them at running the right lines.

If he can hold his own in defence I'm sure he will deliver in attack, even if he doesn't break the line. He will bust tackles and make metres like no one has in our backline this year.

Tomane in second chance to save career
    Jamie Gallagher | May 16th, 2011

COMEBACK kid Joseph Tomane has been told to play his own game if thrown a career lifeline against Manly tonight.

Not seen in the NRL since Round 13 last year, Tomane was a notable addition to the Gold Coast Titans' ranks during the side's final training run at Skilled Park yesterday.

The 21-year-old replaced flu-stricken centre Bodene Thompson on the right side and showed all the signs he was ready for a second bite at the NRL.

Tomane looked like he had never left the side as he returned to his post inside speedster David Mead.

However with his contract up at season's end, there's a little extra riding on tonight's performance and coach John Cartwright said Tomane must concentrate on playing to his strengths.

"Joey's a strong runner of the ball, he can break tackles and he's good under the high ball," Cartwright said.

"I want him to go out there and play his own game.

"He's a natural right centre, he's played plenty of football there and I expect he'll slot right in."

Tomane was one of the most highly touted juniors to emerge through the Melbourne ranks in 2008-09 before signing with the Titans. Mimicking a young Mal Meninga, the 190cm, 106kg strike-weapon crossed for seven tries in 11 appearances last year before a season-ending shoulder injury against Canberra.

He also forged a formidable partnership with Mead and Cartwright hopes they can rekindle the old flame tonight.

"Joey played a number of games inside Meady last year which certainly helps," Cartwright said.

"They were a good combination for us and hopefully they can click again."

Defensively, though, the pair left a lot to be desired and Tomane was seemingly blamed for their leaky ways.

At the start of the season he was over-looked for veteran Kiwi Clinton Toopi and more recently for the defence-minded Thompson.

However Cartwright was adamant he didn't want Tomane trying to fill anyone's boots but his own.

"When Joey gets his defence right, he's a big hitter," Cartwright said.

"But I don't expect him to play the way Bodene does. I want him to concentrate on his strengths."

Cartwright said Thompson had until this morning to declare his availability.

Skipper Scott Prince said Tomane deserved every opportunity to reignite his fledgling career.

"Joey's been playing outstanding football in state league and has been training the house down here," Prince said.

I can't wait for tonight's game. I'm desperate for those points.

Default Halfback Scott Prince critical to lifting Gold Coast Titans against Manly Sea Eagles

Halfback Scott Prince critical to lifting Gold Coast Titans against Manly Sea Eagles

OUT-OF-SORTS Gold Coast halfback Scott Prince has been urged to recapture his running game on Monday night to ignite the Titans' teetering premiership campaign.

The Titans face a daunting showdown against the high-flying Sea Eagles, who will finish the round entrenched in the top four with victory at Skilled Park.

With the Coast languishing in 14th spot with three wins from nine games, Prince is under mounting pressure to return to his lethal best.

The former Maroons playmaker has made one line break in 640 minutes of football this season, but gave a glimpse of his class in round 6 when he orchestrated the Titans' 20-14 upset of Wests Tigers.

Former Test halfback Greg Alexander said it was time for Prince to back himself against the Sea Eagles.

Coach John Cartwright's side will be desperate to hit back after last week's 34-14 home drubbing against the Warriors.

"I'd like to see him getting back to running the footy," Alexander said.

"He doesn't miss a beat with his kicking and passing, but the Titans need Scott Prince running and creating oppor-tunities for other players.

"He's played a couple of good games and I saw both of them.

"He did well against the Roosters (in the Titans' 24-13 win in round 8) and he was great against the Tigers, but we probably haven't seen the standard we're used to from Scotty.

"Prince always plays his best football when he runs the footy.

"He's done it so many times in the past and there's no reason why he can't do it again.

"I wouldn't be surprised with the pressure that's been on the club if Princey comes out and has a big game against the Sea Eagles."

There have been some mitigating factors behind Prince's form.

He battled a hamstring injury early and has had to work with multiple scrumbase partners this season, the latest being William Zillman.

"Not having a regular six is another factor and that all adds up to helping a halfback play his best," Alexander said.

"If the Titans forwards can stand up against Manly, that will give Prince the platform to take the line on."

Manly fullback Brett Stewart has been ruled out of the clash after succumbing to a hamstring strain.

Will Hopoate switches from wing to fill Stewart's spot at fullback, with ex-Test rep David Williams coming into the vacant wing spot.

Titan Joseph Tomane is on standby for centre Bodene Thompson (virus).

Titans interchange forward Ben Ridge appears to have overcome a shoulder complaint, while Manly co-captain Jason King (rib) also looks to have received the green light.

"It's a must win. Mentally, it is very important that we win ahead of our bye," Cartwright told AAP.
