Tweed Pair Keep Wynnum Down

A VETERAN playmaker and an emerging young gun inspired the Tweed Heads Seagulls to a fifth-straight Intrust Super Cup victory today.

Brad Davis, a member of the Tweed?s 2007 grand final winning team, pulled all the right strings as the Seagulls fought off a mini second-half revival from Wynnum Manly to win 30-10 at BMD Kougari Oval.

Exciting prospect Kayne Lawton followed the more experienced playmaker?s lead and stamped his own mark on the game with several classy touches.

Fittingly, it was Davis and Lawton who delivered what turned out to be a knock-out blow when the master and the apprentice combined superbly in the 53rd minute.

Leading 12-0, Davis put the ball on the chest of Lawton who skipped around Reece Blayney to score.

Davis? conversion extended the lead to three converted tries but the game turned dramatically after the Tweed knocked on from the re-start.

Wynnum Manly centre Jason Moon gave the Chook Pen faithful something to sing about when he carried two defenders over to score in the left corner.

When recalled halfback Matt Seamark slotted the difficult conversion and Shea Moylan scored soon after following a brilliant grubber kick and re-gather, Wynnum Manly was suddenly in with a huge chance of registering their first win of the season.

However, Tweed regained their composure and had the final say with late tries to Tim Maccan and Nat Barnes.

Maccan and Barnes both played in the club?s last premiership win and on today?s form, there is every chance that the loyal Tweed pair could again be holding aloft the Queensland Cup trophy in September.

The undefeated Tweed outfit currently sits in equal first spot alongside Redcliffe and the Northern Pride.

However, coach Ben Anderson still feels his team is yet to hit its straps.

Anderson was slightly critical of their execution in today?s round five clash, despite watching his side take a 12-0 lead into half-time.

Kingi Akauola opened the scoring for the Tweed in the 18th minute after combining with Davis to slice through the Wynnum line.

The home team then had several great opportunities to hit back but they were guilty of taking the wrong option with the try-line in sight.

Tweed was having no such problems and they enjoyed a slice of luck late in the half when a deflection from a grubber kick presented Rod Griffin with his fourth try of the season.

Griffin, Cody Nelson and Dean Murphy got through plenty of work for the Tweed.
