Unbeaten Dolphins Punish Jets

THE Redcliffe Dolphins punished a mistake-riddled Ipswich Jets outfit last night to record a convincing 44-22 Intrust Super Cup victory in slippery conditions at the North Ipswich Reserve.

A tight tussle was expected between two of the competition?s unbeaten teams, but the clinical Dolphins were in a game of their own in the first half as they scored at nearly a point a minute to lead 32-6 at half-time.

To their credit, the Jets restricted the damage in the second half and scored three tries, despite finishing the match with just two fit players on the bench following injuries to Keiron Lander and Brendon Marshall.

The writing was on the wall early for the Jets when the home team conceded a soft opening try to Shane Tronc.

Tronc regularly made good metres in the middle as the Redcliffe forwards again laid the platform for their elusive and highly-skilled backs.

The Dolphins stretched their lead to 12-0 after just 14 minutes when five-eighth Joe Bond sliced through close to the line.

After yet another Ipswich turnover, long-striding Redcliffe centre Marty Hatfield broke the Jets defence following a scrum win to score the visiting team?s third of the night.

Further tries to Liam Georgetown and Bond had the Dolphins in front 26-0 before the hosts finally got on the board through a piece of individual brilliance from fullback Marshall Chalk.

But the Jets were again punished for turning over possession following the re-start.

This time it was Redcliffe winger Mitch Rivett ? the recipient of a superb cross field kick from Ryan Carr ? who delivered the blow on the left flank.

The John Dixon-coached Redcliffe outfit has now won its opening five matches to be firmly entrenched as one of the competition?s ?big three?.

If the Dolphins beat Mackay and the Northern Pride takes care of Ipswich next weekend, the Peninsula club and the 2010 premiers will square off in a round 7 blockbuster for the right to remain undefeated.

Ipswich co-coaches Ben and Shane Walker will be calling for a more disciplined effort against the Pride.

The Jets played with 12 men for a 10 minute period late in the second half after Lorenzo Maafu was sin-binned by referee Chris Butler for back chat after a string of repeated infringements by Ipswich.

The Jets were in real danger of conceding more than a half century of points at this stage but a late try to Ramon Filipine followed by Luke Walker?s second ? which came after a strong bust by Titan Sam Tagataese ? added some respectability to the scoreboard
