Default Titan player claims to have been hurt in 'lovers' tiff'

A GOLD Coast Titans player has been embroiled in an alleged domestic violence incident with the player claiming to be the victim.

Police were called to a Gold Coast Highway residence at Miami about 2am yesterday after a disturbance involving the player and a woman.

The man was believed to have been drinking earlier in the night at nightspots around Broadbeach.

A police spokesman said a 23-year-old woman was due to appear in Coolangatta Magistrates Court today in relation to a domestic violence incident involving a 27-year-old man.

Police sources said the woman was believed to have gone to the player's residence, woken him up and tried to get in.

The footballer is believed to have resisted and a scuffle ensued in which the man reportedly suffered a minor injury.

The woman is believed to be considering a domestic violence counter-claim, police said.

Gold Coast Titans chief executive Michael Searle said last night he had investigated the incident and was confident the player had done the right thing.

"I've spoken to (the player), the young woman involved, her brother and the police and at this stage, the club won't be taking any further action," he said.

"This seems to be little more than a lovers' tiff and everyone's a little bit embarrassed. But (the player) is the aggrieved party here."

No idea, the woman sounds a bit feisty though. Sign her up Michael! Our pack needs a bit of aggression.

Not the type of thing we need right now but seems like there is not much in it.

Greg Bird cleared by Gold Coast Titans

THE Gold Coast Titans have cleared Greg Bird of any wrongdoing following an early morning domestic violence complaint.

Police were called to Bird's Miami residence at 2am on Sunday after a neighbour reported a verbal dispute and a 23-year-old woman was ordered to attend court today.

Both Bird and the woman are understood to have resolved the matter and neither are pressing charges.

The Titans investigated the incident and said there was no reason to discipline the Australian and NSW representative.

?The club has conducted a review and spoken to all parties,? a Titans spokesman said. ?It was nothing more than a verbal disagreement and is a private matter.?

Police sources saying the woman was believed to have gone to Bird's residence, woken him up and tried to get in and Bird reportedly suffered a minor injury in a scuffle.

A police spokeswoman told AAP that police attended an altercation and the woman was ordered to appear in court ?in relation to a domestic violence issue?.

Bird is understood to be embarrassed about the matter and was taken by surprise when reporters attempted to quiz him before Titans training today.

The 27-year-old will make his return from a one-week ban, for striking Canberra halfback Matt Orford, against the Wests Tigers on Friday night at Skilled Park.

He could be selected at either five-eighth or the back-row when the team is named on Tuesday.

The Titans also hope to have lock Ashley Harrison back from injury with second-rower Anthony Laffranchi set to miss the match due to an ankle injury sustained in the 22-12 loss to North Queensland in Townsville.

Court clears Greg Bird of wrongdoing

    AAPMon, Apr 11, 2011 - 6:09 PM
An embarrassed Greg Bird will make his NRL return from suspension for Gold Coast on Friday after being embroiled in an early morning domestic dispute.

Police were called to Bird's Miami residence at 2am on Sunday after a neighbour reported a verbal dispute and a 23-year-old woman was ordered to attend court on Monday.

Both Bird and the woman are understood to have resolved the matter and neither are pressing charges.

Titans chief executive Michael Searle investigated the incident and said there was no reason to discipline the Australian and NSW representative.

"The club has conducted a review of the situation and all parties have agreed it was nothing more than a verbal disagreement that ended up in the public domain," Searle said.

"It is a private matter and all parties are slightly embarrassed that this has even obtained the media coverage it has."

News Ltd reported police sources saying the woman was believed to have gone to Bird's residence, woken him up and tried to get in and Bird reportedly suffered a minor injury in a scuffle.

A police spokeswoman told AAP that police attended an altercation and the woman was ordered to appear in court "in relation to a domestic violence issue".

Bird is understood to be embarrassed about the matter and was taken by surprise when reporters attempted to quiz him before Titans training on Monday morning.

The 27-year-old will make his return from a one-week ban, for striking Canberra halfback Matt Orford, against Wests Tigers on Friday night at Skilled Park.

The Titans also hope to have lock Ashley Harrison back from injury with second-rower Anthony Laffranchi set to miss the match due to an ankle injury sustained in the 22-12 loss to North Queensland in Townsville.
