POLICE are investigating a Christmas Day motorcycle collision between NRL star Greg Bird and his stepfather.
Bird, who was acquitted last year of glassing his then girlfriend in the face at his Cronulla flat, escaped serious injury after he and his stepfather's motorbikes collided while the two were riding near Maitland in the Hunter Valley shortly before noon.
Bird had been visiting his family for Christmas.
His stepfather was taken by ambulance to Newcastle's John Hunter Hospital with abdominal injuries.
"It was one of those incidents that happen so quickly and we were lucky that neither myself nor my stepdad were seriously injured," Bird said yesterday. "Given he has many years of experience with bikes and driving on country gravel roads, and [the fact] he lost it makes you realise how easily accidents can happen. Fortunately we are both OK and not seriously hurt."
A relative said the family was shaken by the crash.
Central Hunter duty officer acting Inspector Joe Krzanic said Bird and his stepfather were travelling west along Trappaud Rd at South Maitland when they crashed.
Investigations into the accident were continuing and police were hoping to interview Bird's stepfather once he was released from hospital.
However, Inspector Krzanic said it was unlikely any further action would be taken against Bird.
