NRL refers betting investigations to NSW Police

Cowboys v Bulldogs on Game AnalyserThe National Rugby League has today referred investigations into betting activity surrounding the Round 24 match between the Bulldogs and the Cowboys to the NSW Police.

During the last week the NRL has, with the assistance of Mr Ray Murrihy and betting agencies, reviewed an unusually large number of bets placed on the first point-scoring option in the match.

The focus of the NRL?s investigation to date remains the extent of the betting activity and any irregularities that it may present.

?Clearly this is a matter that requires the most thorough investigation possible and we believe it is in everyone?s interests for the Police to be involved,? NRL Chief Executive, Mr David Gallop, said today.

?We have informally shared with them the information that has been compiled to date and will continue to work with them to assist with any investigation that may result.

?At this stage the NRL has not made any accusations against any individuals.?

Serious, deadly serious and so it should be. Not only is anything like this a crime but it destroys the integrity of the game and also betrays the supporters and players.

Coming from a racing background, I understand the need for an intense focus on integrity. Rugby League needs alot more resource dedicated to this. It is both important for practical investigation, to be a deterent but also so people can have faith in Rugby League as a sport and a betting product.

If we want all the $$$$ from betting agencies, we need to lift our game in these areas.
