I hope we can overcome our injury problems. We are really missing Preston out there lately.

Tigers use every player they can spare to gain solid position on ladder

IT IS said that the more players you use in a season, the less likely you are to make it a premiership season. Wests Tigers, who have used the third-most players leading into round 26, are bucking that trend.

Despite a horror injury run that will continue into the final round and finals, the Tigers are in second place on the NRL ladder and providing coach Tim Sheens with reason for optimism.

It has been suggested that the Tigers took full advantage of having relatively few players involved in the mid-season representative fixtures, but the fact they have used 30 players so far this season proves they have faced adversity as well.

''Although we didn't have anyone in the State of Origin, we've had a fair injury list,'' Sheens said. ''At least the other sides got to use their players, even though they were tired.''

The list of players used by the clubs this season is telling. North Queensland and Canterbury have used the most players (32), which partly explains why they have struggled, while the sides with the fewest alterations include St George Illawarra, Manly and Penrith.

Of course, for the lowly sides, personnel changes can be the result of poor form, but that can hardly be said of the Tigers, who are second on the ladder.

''We have had to use a few, but the depth of the club has been better this year,'' Sheens said. ''Wests and Balmain-Ryde are in the [NSW Cup] finals and the [under] 20s are one win out.''

The Tigers side for Friday night's clash with Gold Coast will be a patched-up one. Already missing will be centre Chris Lawrence, who had his jaw plated on Sunday night after suffering a break.

Fullback Wade McKinnon (hamstring) has also been ruled out, while Sheens still holds out hope that John Skandalis (buttock) and Gareth Ellis (calf) can recover in time. Bryce Gibbs could return from a fractured kneecap, although Sheens is reluctant to risk him. He said Liam Fulton (calf) would not play against the Titans.

The Titans have their own issues, too. Prop Luke Bailey is in doubt after scans revealed he has a fractured thumb - although the fact he played the last quarter of Saturday night's loss to Cronulla with it would give them some confidence he might still play.

Five-eighth Mat Rogers (hip), back-rower Anthony Laffranchi (shoulder) and Preston Campbell (hamstring), are also in doubt for the match, which could decide second place.

The weekend was a damaging one for others. The Knights will be without captain Kurt Gidley and fullback Shannon McDonnell for their last game of the season, against Melbourne at AAMI Park on Sunday, and former Storm prop Ben Cross is in extreme doubt due to a broken hand. Gidley sustained cartilage damage behind his kneecap midway through the second half of Newcastle's 26-18 loss to the Dragons. He is expected to recover in time to be available for Australia's Four Nations tournament following the NRL grand final.

Broken thumb won't stop Bailey: Rogers

Playing with a broken thumb wouldn't be a problem for Gold Coast "machine" Luke Bailey, according to Titans teammate Mat Rogers.

Bailey is one of the Titans' major injury concerns ahead of Friday night's NRL clash with Wests Tigers - a game which could lock up a home final.

The Titans enforcer is yet to receive a final verdict on his suspected fracture - an injury that usually means four to six weeks on the sidelines.

But Rogers did not need much convincing ahead of their crunch game at Skilled Park.

"He will play. He's a machine," Rogers said on Monday.

"He's one of the toughest blokes I have played with - he just keeps going.

"If there is a one per cent chance of him playing I will back him." Bailey will know more when he visits a specialist by Wednesday but has already fuelled speculation he may play with a custom guard.

"If we can make a guard I think I will play this week," Bailey told Gold Coast reporters.

"The doc seems to think I can't do any more damage." Bailey is part of a worrying injury list for the Titans as they line up against the in-form Wests Tigers.

Talisman Preston Campbell (hamstring) is another concern after not training with the main group on Monday.

"It's a different injury with Presto - you can't rush a hamstring," Rogers said.

"We want Presto firing at the business end. He will be 100 per cent I am sure for the first semi." But Rogers (hip flexor) and backrower Anthony Laffranchi (shoulder) are expected to play.

Certainly Rogers was backing himself to run out on Friday night.

"Yeah, I will be playing. There won't be a doubt," he said.

He better be - the Skilled Park clash on Friday night will pay tribute to the outgoing dual international's glittering career.

"For me and my family it has been a long journey, it culminates with our final home game of the regular season this weekend," Rogers said.

"It's exciting. I am going to have a lot of family and friends who are travelling a long way to come along and watch the game - my sister and her husband are coming over from Perth.

"So hopefully we can put on a good show for them." The Titans received a reality check ahead of the clash due to last round's shock loss to the Sharks, snapping a five-game winning streak.

"I never like to say it was the loss we needed to have," Rogers said.

"I never want to lose when I play football.

"But it helps you reassess where you are at.

"I don't think we had any bad stuff creep into our game in the last five games.

"We just let ourselves down in little areas - it adds up.

"We just have to get back to what won us those five games." They better - they line up against a red-hot Wests Tigers who are showing distinct signs of their 2005 premiership-winning razzle dazzle.

"They are a great side. They can attack from anywhere," Rogers said.

"We are going to have to be ready."

Default Laffranchi's hand up for Tiger fight

Laffranchi's hand up for Tiger fight

    Luke Turgeon | August 31st, 2010

THE Gold Coast Titans have received another boost ahead of this week's big clash against the Wests Tigers, with former NSW and Test back rower Anthony Laffranchi declaring himself a certain starter.

Laffranchi has recovered from a shoulder injury, which kept him out of last week's loss to the Sharks, and will resume his place in the back row.

The news comes a day after dual international Mat Rogers announced that a hip problem would not keep him out of his farewell match at Skilled Park on Friday night.

Prop Luke Bailey (fractured thumb) and fullback Preston Campbell (hamstring) remain under an injury cloud.

''I am good to go,'' said Laffranchi.

''I pulled up sweet after a bit of treatment.

''It was disappointing missing a big game last week against the Sharks, but it is an even bigger game this week against the Tigers, playing for a top four and a home semi.''

Laffranchi is expected to return to his No.11 jumper, with Greg Bird shifting to the bench.

    Bailey goes under the knife

By Laine Clark AAP Tue, 31 Aug 2010 16:46:25
Luke Bailey's hand surgery hasn't ruled the inspirational prop out of the Gold Coast Titans' crunch NRL clash with Wests Tigers on Friday night - yet.

Bailey went under the knife on Tuesday after sustaining a broken thumb in last round's shock loss to the Sharks but the ex-Test frontrower was still named for the Skilled Park showdown.

A Titans spokesman said Bailey would be reassessed later this week but club medical staff would be guided by the specialist's advice.

Bailey has been pencilled into the starting front-row - but livewire fullback Preston Campbell has been rubbed out after succumbing to a hamstring complaint.

Other injury concerns - backrower Anthony Laffranchi (shoulder) and pivot Mat Rogers (hip) - were named in the starting side on Tuesday.

Laffranchi slots straight into the second row to ensure he lines up against his former club after missing the Sharks boilover.

While Laffranchi was pleased to be back, he was keeping his fingers crossed Bailey would be given the thumbs up and run out on Friday night.

"He's our inspirational leader, a cornerstone of our pack," he said on Tuesday.

"Fingers crossed, or thumbs crossed, he will play." Laffranchi looked forward to taking on the team he helped secure the 2005 NRL trophy.

But the significance of the clash far outweighed any sentiment for Laffranchi.

Win and they lock up a top four spot - and a home final.

Lose, and they could drop to sixth.

Laffranchi said bowing out of the 2009 finals "in straight sets" had steeled the side ahead of their crunch game.

"We had some pretty good form coming into the finals last year and bowed out in straight sets," he said.

"We got that taste of defeat which is hard to swallow at that time of year.

"But it was a good learning curve.

"We are probably in a better mental state this time around.

"I would say we are a top four team for sure.

"But we are not thinking beyond Friday night." Laffranchi admitted there was a sense of deja vu watching the Wests Tigers this year.

"They are definitely playing with the same kind of momentum and razzle dazzle (as 2005)," he said.

"But they are also playing with composure, they are putting together an 80 minute performance - that's a danger sign.

"They have their injuries but they still have their key strike weapons in (Robbie) Farah and (Benji) Marshall.

But Laffranchi believed their inspirational half Scott Prince was ready to fire after finding a perfect foil in Rogers.

"I think Matty is thriving at six, he's really balanced Princey out," he said.

"Princey seems to be more relaxed, the pressure is off him, he's probably not our so called go to man in attack.

"They really complement each other. It's good to see the two old fellas going around." Rogers will be celebrated at the Friday night match - his final regular season home game before retiring.

Commemorative "Rat" t-shirts - named after the dual international's moniker - will be on sale at the ground.

I think we the legion should target Marshall in this game, he looks to me like he as a pathological need to be liked.

I think from word go, we should hammer him with sledges, he played a lot of footy here on the coast and wont expect it, he also will concentrate more on us hopefully then his friendship and rivalry against Prince.

What are people suggestions for the sledge?

Short and to the point, and he must understand what it means, nothing racial of co****.

    Something like

Psychological warfare, let's do it. Just something like Coaster said which would work a treat.

Im delighted to see Boof back on deck. And we should be mentally ready to take on the Wests Tigers.

They aren't great by any stretch of the imagination but to me they are the two best the NRL has by a country mile. The NRL obviously sees the importance of this game and their appointment gives it match of the round status for sure.

I reckon the worst are Shayne Hayne and Jason Robinson and after he slaughtered us at Shark Park I hope we never see that little pr!ck again in 2010.

    From the SMH website:

The Titans have already sold 17,000 tickets for Friday night and are expecting close to a packed house in what could be the final appearance at Skilled Park for Rogers.

Now that is exciting - the place should be rocking come Friday!!
