'Gutter' kick at Gold Coast Titans
GOLD Coast Titans coach John Cartwright yesterday blasted the 'gutter element' of Gold Coast sporting fans who have turned on the club.
"It makes me angry, very angry," a fired-up Cartwright said. "I tell myself not to let it get to me, but it does, only because of the type of comments being made and who they are being made about.
"It is coming from just a minority, a gutter element from within the Gold Coast and I guess that is what hurts the most -- people from this city attacking us.
"This club was established through a lot of hard work. But it was established for this city ... yet the moment we hit our first hurdle the knockers, the critics, crawl out of the woodwork."
Cartwright was reacting to negative comments on a long-running dispute the club is having with builder, and former sponsor Alex Simpson, which has kept the Titans out of their new Centre of Excellence training and administration centre at Robina.
The barbs have also become more stinging after his team lost their last two outings to the lower placed Roosters and Raiders.
"I think it is fantastic that people on the Coast support clubs other than the Titans, but some of the crap that is getting around is just ridiculous," he said.
"Would these people be happier if there was no NRL team on the Gold Coast, no reason for their club to come here each year and play at Skilled Park, a ground which has been created because of the Titans.
"These people seem intent on the negatives. Open their bloody eyes and have a look at the amount of positives this club has brought to the city.
"There are two glaring examples in Friday night's clash with Manly at Skilled -- Luke O'Dwyer and Ryan James.
"Both local juniors, both still on the Coast because of the Titans. Luke had to go to Sydney to get a start, but because of this club he was able to come back home.
"Ryan is a great kid ... if it wasn't for the Titans he would be in Sydney or Melbourne. Ask his parents where they would prefer he play.
"Our under-20s are 99 per cent local products. They wouldn't be here without the Titans."
